Everyday crockery that won't be discontinued

Very exciting topic! Grin

We've got nice special occasion crockery thanks to getting married. However we need some for every day.

Problem is we have small children plus we are a bit clumsy so we want something that you can buy individually (when we inevitably break a plate), and also that isn't just going to be around for a couple of years then stop being made (like my M&S pasta bowls). Also we don't want to spend a fortune, this is just for every day use.

Please can anyone offer any good suggestions?

Thanks

I once bought The White Company plain white dinner set which cost megabucks. I broke a couple of plates and saw in Sainsburys a similar plate for £3 each. Bargain! I bought them and when i added them to the White Company ones THEY WERE EXACTLY THE SAME. Probably made in the same factory. As are the Morrison's ones. So i have a mix of them all, all identical and cheap across the whole range. They have kept selling these for over 14 years now.

The only thing i have different are the cereal /pudding bowls which are a mix and match of blue & white crockery from everywhere.

Denby does discontinue regularly, our wedding service was discontinued years ago (was only in production for about 5 years) and despite being registered with China Search we have pieces we can't replace.

Ninkanink · 25/01/2020 14:39

We just buy plain white, wherever we find it as and when we need it - Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Home Sense, etc. That works best for us because although everything doesn’t ‘match’ exactly, it’s still all white and very similar, so it fits together well.

They've been making what I buy for at least 5 years.

Because it's cheap and slim and light you can buy and store loads easily and cheaply. Think we probably have 16 plates, side plates, bowls and pasta bowls...

Knittedfairies · 25/01/2020 14:41

Our Denby crockery is at least 20 years old and has been through countless dishwasher cycles; it's fine. We bought seconds from their factory outlet, and have been able to replace the odd broken item.

CostcoFan · 25/01/2020 14:44

We have Maxwell and Williams cashmere - lots of different sized bowls and plates etc. I’ve got a few bowls and things from supermarkets and so long as they are white porcelain match well enough.

GorkyMcPorky · 25/01/2020 14:45

I like the Sainsbury's plain white porcelain. Nice and thin. I hate glazing that cracks.

BessMarvin · 25/01/2020 14:45

It is a good point that white is going to match white.

So confused now except I think plain white is the way forward

Definitely plain white. That way, it doesn't matter if a particular range is discontinued, everything will still blend nicely.

I didn't know M&S discontinued ranges when I finally graduated from the boxes of shit patterned stuff sold in Argos and 79p things from IKEA. I've told DP that if he smashes one of them, he's buying me Cornishware as a replacement. Or vintage bone china (as I know that stuff's tough as old boots, but he doesn't).

He's been extremely careful with them ever since.

LIZS · 25/01/2020 15:45

Denby, and i think mist of the traditional uk pottery companies, give 18 months or more notice of discontinuation. Lines like Imperial Blue have been going for 25+ years. Ikea tend to change colour but keep style. They chip easily though.

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 25/01/2020 15:48

We had the John Lewis House White and have swapped in IKEA365 with some Asda (might be Tesco) as it got chipped or smashed.

Unfortunately I threw out all the chipped bowls prior to my last IKEA trip - having checked they were in stock they weren't actually there in store and now we've only got about 7 bowls! White plates are definitely much of a richness though.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 25/01/2020 15:54

I just buy white stuff when I see it....okay so it doesn't match perfectly but no one has ever recoiled in visible horror at my mismatching white dinner plates or pudding bowls!

Plus it means I can just buy stuff new when I want instead of having to replace a whole set...I did have a whole set of white...bowls, plates, cups, mugs, saucers, tea plates....but bit of that are missing and some of it is getting chipped, so I am replacing it steadily

Just got some really lovely pasta bowls in Morrisons, of all places for when we have "fork suppers" and eat like savages in front of the tv :o Blush

I also only buy white serving dishes too, so for non savage days we are covered too :o

DumbledoresWhore · 25/01/2020 16:35

If you want durable, go for stoneware. It is thicker, sturdier and does not chip in the dishwasher. It also has a nice, more expensive feel. Cheap, thin, porcelain is a waste of time. And money.

I second Denby, but stoneware ranges. Looks great, withstands heavy use, repeated dishwashing, does not chip or break easily. If you got a Clubcard, you can get Denby crockery free by using your points (will still need to pay delivery).

Dolorabelle · 25/01/2020 16:37

I only like bone China and my everyday China comes from Wilkos. They do a lovely basic bone China set for around £30 and it’s pretty standardised so you can buy replacements when you need to.

Dolorabelle · 25/01/2020 16:39

Oh and second (or third) all the posts about white China. The wilkos sets I have (I bought about 3) are white and they mix and match nicely with my Wedgwood set.

BessMarvin · 25/01/2020 16:46

Thanks for loads more tips. Who knew it was such a minefield!

Sorry wrong thread!

I have Ikea 365. Yes they have changed shape but they have lasted quite well.

Proseccoagain · 25/01/2020 22:36

My Denby was discontinued almost as soon as we bought it!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/01/2020 22:43

I buy Emma Bridgewater - I don’t have a set, just a mix of their patterns. It means that, if they discontinue one, I can get a different pattern, and it doesn’t look out of place.

RamblinRosie · 26/01/2020 02:52

I second Denby White, Costco often do really inexpensive sets, plus you can add when Denby have sales. Also, it looks fine with any other predominantly white china.

Orchardgreen · 26/01/2020 02:58

Dishwashers are not kind to Emma Bridgewater.

Helga55 · 26/01/2020 03:40

I'd go for Denby, mine goes in the dishwasher, oven, doesn't chip, looks good. I love having a look round their sections in John Lewis etc, they seem to have some lovely designs atm. But, yes, they do discontinue their patterns, as any company will do, but I used ReplacingPieces & managed to get more plates & bowls when I found out they'd stopped making mine, so is possible to keep it going for much longer after you can't buy it directly from the manufacturer
