Everyday crockery that won't be discontinued

Very exciting topic! Grin

We've got nice special occasion crockery thanks to getting married. However we need some for every day.

Problem is we have small children plus we are a bit clumsy so we want something that you can buy individually (when we inevitably break a plate), and also that isn't just going to be around for a couple of years then stop being made (like my M&S pasta bowls). Also we don't want to spend a fortune, this is just for every day use.

Please can anyone offer any good suggestions?

Thanks

Denby. Get it when they do 30/40 per cent off sales or from outlets. They virtually never discontinue.

It’s slightly more expensive that normal but worth every penny. We have four kids, stone floors and use it every day and almost none of it ever gets smashed. It’s incredibly robust.

Denby halo, it's lovely too.

Agree with Denby. I got mine twenty years ago and it still looks new and is still available to buy. I dropped a cup once and broke a tile not the cup!
Also you can register the pattern you are collecting and they'll give you two years notice if they plan to discontinue. Well, they used to.

AdorableMisfit · 25/01/2020 13:59

@SpeedofaSloth - Disappointingly, IKEA have changed their 365 range. The current version doesn't match what I bought a few years ago. It's very annoying.

Denby White. Timeless.

BessMarvin · 25/01/2020 14:08

Wow I wasn't sure if anyone would reply! Fab thanks I'll check out Denby!

Anyone know how often Denby have sales? I looked around Christmas and New Year but their sales were only on the more unusual patterns which I think they will phase out.

WishUponAStar88 · 25/01/2020 14:10

To all the Denby lovers, are they fairly sturdy and do they cope with the dishwasher ok? My dinner plates and bowls are pretty thin and are forever getting little chips in them so looking to replace soon.

okiedokieme · 25/01/2020 14:11

Another denby fan, got mine through Tesco clubCard

Musseswoofles · 25/01/2020 14:13

My Denby was my grandparents, it’s at least 30 years old and when we have the occasional Breakage we can always easily plug the gaps on eBay. Worth its weight in gold.

Musseswoofles · 25/01/2020 14:16

Goodness me I’ve just read ours was first produced in 1956 and discontinued in 1976, still looks as good as new!

BikeRunSki · 25/01/2020 14:18

My Denby crockery got discontinued about 5 years ago. It was about 15 years old, and is our “best”. It’s actually all we use. We decided it seemed pointless to have nice Crockett that we only used a occassionally.

Another vote for denby. Croft have also carried their lumpy range for ever. Or you could buy Sophie Alport in a few different patterns. Homogeneous style but it’s not a disaster if they stop carrying one particular line.

Elouera · 25/01/2020 14:25

We have a basic white range from tescos, which came in a box with settings for 4, plus you can buy each part separately. We bought this as rented out the place for AirBNB and expected breakages.

Also using tesco vouchers, I bought a white denby set. Problem was that the dinner plates are 1cm larger than my other ones, and dont fit in the cupboard without leaving the door slightly ajar- so check your cupboard depth before buying anything!

BessMarvin · 25/01/2020 14:28

Elouera good point about cupboards

Another vote for Denby Halo

RandomMess · 25/01/2020 14:30

I had white denby it was rubbish, chipped easily, really thick so if you didn't preheat plated food went cold so quickly.

Ditched the lot and moved onto Ikea white thin plates/bowels etc - think they are glass. 50p each fit in the dishwasher loads better, take up less room in the crockery drawer and food stays hotter.

BessMarvin · 25/01/2020 14:30

Notonthestairs if I've got this right, the White dinner plate that's £14 on the Denby website is £6.50 here

Sophie Conrad portmeirion is our every day stuff:.. I always buy it from the outlet village places (McArthur Glen?) but available online as seconds and you’d never tell it’s not perfect x

Emma Bridgewater- you can mix and match patterns

Foxes157 · 25/01/2020 14:32

Asda smart price dinner set, cost me about a fiver donkeys years ago, for 4 place settings. Plain white and seem to be virtually indestructible.

We bought cheap with having young kids and not caring if they got broken, said children are now teens.

BessMarvin · 25/01/2020 14:34

piefacedClique that's lovely, so much so it's our best stuff!

Those recommending Ikea or Asda etc, do they keep making the same thing year after year?
