Self care when you have a cold

Full of the cold and feeling sorry for myself. I've been trying to fight it with echinechea, vit C and zinc tablets but feeling really rotten now. DH doing DC bedtime so I only need to worry about myself this evening. What makes you feel better when you have the cold? Probably going to get in warm PJs, Netflix binge and hit the lemsip.

Hot water bottle/bed socks
Clean sheets with eucalyptus oil on a tissue
Hot water, whisky and honey
As much sleep as is possible

Very hot bath then drink a hot toddy in bed. You’ll sweat really badly but feel much better for it tomorrow.

Soak in the bath then bed. Squirt of Sudafed up the nose and prop the pillows so I don't wake up with.a blocked nose.

Watching this for top tips. Have another cold after 3 weeks of feeling okay...

Twospaniels · 24/01/2020 20:45

Aw no. Me too. Just started today. I’ve been taking vit c and echinacea for the last two weeks, so am disappointed to go down with this.
I’m always really hungry when I have a cold. Just had a large portion of chilli con carne, and apple, a banana and a couple of biscuits 😳

Honey and lemon to drink.
Lots of extra B and C vitamins
Olbas oil on a tissue tucked inside pillowcase
Plenty of fluids
Paracetamol and decongestant tablets before bed.

Rest trumps everything else I think.

Also I think raw garlic is amazing - I have swallowed raw cloves before. Bloody awful but I think it's great.

Lemsip and hot water bottles and books.

I had a head cold earlier this month. I just put my pyjamas, made a hot water bottle and went to bed and fell asleep.

Queenparsnip · 24/01/2020 20:51

Thanks everyone. Lots of things I hadn't thought of- bed socks, fab! I am hungry but can't work out what I feel like eating other than crisps and toast. Not sure I can face a hot toddy.

Before I bought a steamer, I used to inhale steam from a bowl of hot water, sometimes with olbas oil or eucalytus oil floating on top. I've since bought a steam machine (boots, argos etc sell them) which is much easier. Set it and face is vaguely towards me while watching TV then set it when I get into bed. Mine has an auto off when empty but at least means I can get to sleep for a few hours.

Also Pseudoephedrine tablets from the pharmacisit. I find that phenylephrine doesnt work as well for me, BUT, the former can cause palpitations in some people.

I'm on day day 3 of a horrible cough / cold and I'm already in bed.

I managed to drag myself through the day (older kids at school but I've had a teething toddler to contend with!) of course now I can't bloody sleep. I have the dehumidifier on but it's so noisy Shock

Tartyflette · 24/01/2020 21:03

Echinacea drops in the early stages. Sometimes it works, others not.
Otrivine nasal decongestant spray before bed otherwise I don’t sleep at all and keep waking up with a dry mouth and totally blocked nose.
Also paracetamol and drinking plenty of water.
Or Co-codamol (only at night) If I’m feeling really terrible, and only once or twice per cold.
