It’s a bit niche. There were 3 young women who were looking after a hunting /eventing yard and I think one of them had to ride in a point to point race to win some money. Possibly on a horse with one eye who may or may not have been a racehorse in his youth.

The name Henrietta rings a bell.

Please help me with my nostalgic hankering for books from my youth!

Sadly MercyDulbottle was already taken 😕

@vampirethriller - I always wondered.... what is a five finger exercise (as mentioned above the poem)?

bigchris · 26/01/2020 19:43

Oh love this thread

Has anyone mentioned the silver brumby books, I loved them

That poem quoted below is the same thing my English teacher in 2nd form, today's year 8 , tokd me when I would always write about horses for creative writing homework , and poetry, and anything really !

Allington · 26/01/2020 19:56

@BathshebaKnickerStickers Wish for a Pony - Diana P-T. It's the first story about Augusta and Daybreak, who then becomes friends with Christina of Three Ponies and Shannon, and a Pony to School

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 26/01/2020 20:02

Allington Wish For A Pony was one of Monica Edwards' Romney Marsh books. The first Augusta/Daybreak Diana P-T book is I Wanted A Pony.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/01/2020 20:05

Nation - I remember that book too but can't remember the title and now it's really bugging me!

vampirethriller · 26/01/2020 20:42

@JillAmanda something piano related maybe? Not sure!

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 26/01/2020 21:00

Was anyone else confused by the title “A Pony to School”? I was half way through expecting the pony to be in the classroom.....

NationMcKinley · 26/01/2020 21:42

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross it’s REALLY bugging me too!! Aaaargh

TheHelpfulHiker · 26/01/2020 22:14

@NationMcKinley yes I read The Hermit's Horse! A brother and sister (?) befriend the hermit when a horse appears in the garden (sent by his sister? My memory is hazy!) I remember they showed off about it, and told people about his house and the hermit got robbed. This thread is amazing, brought back so many memories. I can remember so many details about the ponies in the stories I read.

ADealingMummy · 26/01/2020 22:20

Who remembers, “A horse called September”?
I absolutely loved it.

Flyingarcher · 26/01/2020 22:21

Can any one remember one that was set in London at a mews stables which had double decker type stables and the riders rode on Rotten Row. I think it was based on some real stables. Think the heroine had to live in London and was dreading the lack of horses from her life in the country and discovered these stables. I was intrigued by the rows of double level stables. I think it might have been a green dragon book with a rather disappointing cover.

MarthasGinYard · 26/01/2020 22:27

Which series had one with the
cholly-Sawcutt girls in?

Oh the nostalgia Smile

JillAmanda · 26/01/2020 22:32

@ADealingMummy I bought A Horse Called September on kindle a while back 😁

JillAmanda · 26/01/2020 22:32

The Cholly Sawcutt girls were in the Jill Books 😁

Allington · 26/01/2020 22:34

@Flyingarcher

Tan and Tarmac? Gillian Baxter

MarthasGinYard · 26/01/2020 22:36

Thanks Grin

JillAmanda · 26/01/2020 22:36

Flyingarcher - I remember a book similar.... the heroine ended up with a horse that she kept in mews stables and suspected it had been used to band music because when a Marching band played it perked up and started walking to the beat.
Then I think she ended up taking it to a retirement home in the country??

Witchend · 26/01/2020 22:43

Does anyone remember books about twins and a girl called Peter who rode on the moors? @Duchessofealing

Lone Pine Series by Malcolm Saville. the first book is Mystery at Witchend (see my username) Grin It's the Shropshire Hills usually she rides over though. There are two adventures in Dartmoor. I think the pony (Sally) is a Dartmoor Pony, but I might be wrong there.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 26/01/2020 22:44

Flambards, and Silver Brumby books :) (and I don't even like ponies that much!)
