Help me find this horsey fiction book - please

It’s a bit niche. There were 3 young women who were looking after a hunting /eventing yard and I think one of them had to ride in a point to point race to win some money. Possibly on a horse with one eye who may or may not have been a racehorse in his youth.

The name Henrietta rings a bell.

Please help me with my nostalgic hankering for books from my youth!

Oh, I loved the Jinny series, Jill books, Monica Edwards, Black Stallion, Silver Brumby and the Pullein-Thompson books! I had heaps of them, but I don’t know the Eventing trilogy. I still have Ponies in Peril. One of my favourites was Phantom Horse - I think it was a PT one but I’m not sure.

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 24/01/2020 17:45

That’s it! Nelson had one eye and it was the unnamed Bay Mare Who Always Slipped A Stifle who, er, did what it said on the tin.

mbosnz · 24/01/2020 17:48

Does anyone remember Fly by Night? I think that was possibly a K. M. Peyton?

And there was a book called The Red Rosette. I loved that so much. My parents sold all our books without giving me the heads up that they were going to, and I lost so many irreplaceable old friends!

I still read the Jill series to this day.

TooExtra Phantom Horse was Christine P-T. You’d love the Eventing Trilogy, it’s brilliant.

Caroline Akrill wrote a trilogy about an aspiring actress who had to learn to ride for a part but I can’t remember what it’s/they are called - something about stars? Her semi-autobiographical “Not Quite a Horsewoman” is a good read too.

MarySidney · 24/01/2020 17:50

I was going to mention Monica Edwards. I prefer the Romney Marsh series to Punchbowl Farm. They both have ponies in them, but they're not just about ponies.

A favourite of mine growing up was 'We Couldn't Leave Dinah' by Mary Treadgold. Dinah being the pony.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/01/2020 17:51

Oh my what a blast from the past! I remember those books - and the Comet who had a disc prone to slipping. Wasn't there an American who wanted to buy him but they wouldn't/couldn't sell because of his disc issue?

I forgot all about the Pony Club books - I loved Pony Club Camp best because it was so silly (and a world away from my life).

ScrambledSmegs · 24/01/2020 17:52

Or did he wheeze? I'm going to have to look it up now.

SilentSarey · 24/01/2020 17:53

I ordered the entire Jinny series from amazon about a year ago and re-read them with pleasure 🥰

KnucklesMcGinty · 24/01/2020 17:53

I loved the Flambards ones. Also My Friend Flicka.

SilentSarey · 24/01/2020 17:54

Oh and I got A Horse Called September and Queen Rider on Kindle 😊

I had HUNDREDS of pony books when I was young.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/01/2020 17:56

Gosh. Josephine P-T also wrote murder mysteries set in Horse and Hound type villages. Who knew? Also, there are some PT books free on Kindle Unlimited.

Thanks, onlythetit - will look them up.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/01/2020 18:00

Oh! It was Josephine P-T who wrote the sequels to Black Beauty! Black Ebony, Black Princess and Black Velvet!

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 24/01/2020 18:06

I loved Fly by Night. I wanted a horse in my garden Grin And then Ruth went onto marry Pennington, who was obviously gorgeous (and with hindsight, a complete dick to her)

cwg1 · 24/01/2020 18:10

I love threads about old children's books.

I can't easily link but for a really outstanding site about pony stories look for Jane Badger. I've no connections with Jane, but I'd recommend her book on the subject Heroines on Horseback - I thoroughly enjoyed it.

For a really outstanding Golden Age whodunit with a very horsey theme, try Joanna Cannan's Murder Included. Joanna C. was the Pellein-Thompsons' DM, of course, and also wrote pony stories. Well worth a try if you haven't met them.

Otter46 · 24/01/2020 18:12

That’s so funny you posted this OP as only this weekend I was trying to remember the name but all I remembered was the girl went to live with some eccentric sisters who drove a ‘shooting brake’ and when she first met them there was a dead mouse in the teapot. Not much to go on! If no none else has posted it this website is useful carolineakrill.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/

I second the Jane Badger site / Heroines on Horseback book recommendation cwg1 - I’d just warn anyone to only start browsing the site if you have hours to lose in nostalgia!

Witchend · 24/01/2020 18:17

Love Monica Edwards books. I have them all and GGBP have been republishing them.
Due to an accident I now have 4 copies of The White riders (2 GGBP) and I'm not parting with any of them. Grin

Pat Smythe's Three Jays series are different but very funny.

mbosnz · 24/01/2020 18:18

Oh the Pat Smythes! Those were great!

Shannith · 24/01/2020 18:20

@Sexnotgender I think you'll find the horse in the Jinny books was... me Grin

Flyingarcher · 24/01/2020 18:21

I'm just in Prince Among Ponies andalso Three Ponies and Shannon. I'm just reading Summer of The Great Secret by Monica Edwards.

The pony books taught me to ride! I'm really regreting giving my Black Stallion books away. Am off to look at kindle.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 24/01/2020 18:21

YY to the Silver Brumby books and also My Friend Flicka, especially Thunderhead, son of Flicka.
Bloody loved them.

undercoveraessedai · 24/01/2020 18:22

Love this!! Also reread all my horsey childhood fiction often. You guys might also love Holiday Summer by Decie Merwin which is one of my all time favourites :)

mbosnz · 24/01/2020 18:24

Does anyone remember a series about a girl in America, called Meg? I think the horses names were Gypsy and Nimblefoot?

I was just thinking about Three Ponies and Shannon, and Prince Among Ponies. . .

I guess I had to come to the UK to find people that read the same books!
