It’s a bit niche. There were 3 young women who were looking after a hunting /eventing yard and I think one of them had to ride in a point to point race to win some money. Possibly on a horse with one eye who may or may not have been a racehorse in his youth.

The name Henrietta rings a bell.

Please help me with my nostalgic hankering for books from my youth!

Does anyone remember a series about a group of kids who worked at a yard which was a bit run down, they had a rival yard a little bit away that had the rich kids work there.

One of the stories involved going for a charity overnight hack? Sorry, not much to go on!

I was intrigued by the rows of double level stables.

Whitbread's brewery had them for their dray horses, with ramps instead of stairs. There are websites about them.

Winners Luck - I loved that book!

@MardiBras I think that was Haki the Shetland Pony by Kathleen Fidler. I used to love that one!

MardiBras · 27/01/2020 16:07

@Callunabee you’re right, it was Haki the Shetland Pony. You’ve really made my day Smile
I loved that story when I was younger but I couldn’t remember it’s name.

I moved house and school in the late 80's. My new school had end of year exams for all year groups. Because I had joined mid year I had missed one of the English set texts so my teacher said I could choose any book I had read. The task was a diary written from a characters point of view and I chose a Jill book! Everyone else had Thomas Hardy 😄 I can't remember which Jill book it was but I remember she was staying at a man's house (mum possibly ill) and there was some rudeness to do with an occupied bathroom?

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 27/01/2020 22:34

I think she had to stay with Martin in his big posh house when her Mum had to have an operation? I vaguely remember some bathroom trauma and I also remember Martin buying her mum some purple grapes which were a real luxury back then.

Duchessofealing · 27/01/2020 23:04

@MarySidney thank you!!! It was - off to see if I can get them on kindle Smile

Five finger exercises are for pianists to ensure strength and dexterity in all five fingers. They range from the easy to the very difficult.

I used to lose myself in those pony books to the extent that I wouldn’t hear if someone spoke to me.
As an adult I’ve never had that sort of immersion - and escape - in books, and I don’t know why that is.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 27/01/2020 23:25

Oh, I have LOVED this thread! I adored Jackie Wins a Pony and the sequels, as well as the Silver Brumby books (cried every time at the hit where Bel Bel died), and I also loved Silver Snaffles.

One no one else has mentioned yet are the Linda Craig books by Ann Sheldon. They were more mysteries, and set in the American west, as Linda and her palomino horse solve crimes while also competing in western riding competitions. I thought they were AMAZING!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/01/2020 06:27

Can anyone recognise the book that Nation described earlier in the thread because I need to know what it's called so I can re-read it...

Amyspickledlime · 28/01/2020 07:10

Thank you MrsCrosbyNRTB 😊

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 28/01/2020 07:42

Did anyone read the Blackbirds books by Jo Furminger? I used to wish someone would leave an unwanted pony in my garden! (Preferably without the upheaval of moving house bit though.)

NationMcKinley · 28/01/2020 09:54

I know @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross. It’s driving me NUTS too! I’m going to try google. Again.

Here’s the (slightly garbled) synopsis (as far as I can remember)

Does anyone remember a book where a riding school was being closed and a girl was desperate to buy her favourite pony. She had to do loads of jobs to raise the money but ended up buying one of the other ponies as he looked so small and scared. She only had a small amount of money left but she remember that her fave pony was terrified of dog whistles so blew it a few times which made the pony go wild and look dangerous. Our heroine then managed to buy her for the exact amount she had left. Hurrah!

Redhorss · 28/01/2020 09:58

OMG the Jinny books are my absolute fave. Ive just re read 'For love of a horse' ( im 35..!) haha.

RoxytheRexy · 28/01/2020 17:08

This is awesome. I loved the Jinny books and the Eventers series.

Anyone remember about a group of teenagers on horses that try and solve a local spate of arson attacks?

Also, the someone casually mentioned the Real Finmory House? It’s this true?

MirandaGoshawk · 28/01/2020 17:29

As a little girl, my DD loved a book called The Enchanted Horse by Magdalen Nabb. A bit more of a fairy story than what you're talking about, but beautiful. It references the herds of wild horses that used to roam across Europe. I've read it a few times since DD has grown up and it makes me cry every time!

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 28/01/2020 19:08

Roxy I think the arson attacks one might have one of Christine P-T’s Pony Patrol books? The arsonists were targeting farmers’ hay barns IIRC.

Wifeofbikerviking · 28/01/2020 19:38

A horse called mylor

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 28/01/2020 20:09

@Wifeofbikerviking I remember that book! It was nuts! About a robot horse that won the Grand National Grin

RedRiverHog · 28/01/2020 21:35

You wonderful people! So many memories. I read my copy of 'A Prince Among Ponies' so many times that the pages started to fall out. Wish I still had it.

The 'Flicka' trilogy was also a favourite of mine. Especially Thunderhead.

Ohhh and someone mentioned 'Midnight Dancer'. I can picture the cover, black horse, blue background. I think the girl had an unusual name?

Ju5tAgirlstandinginfrontofaboy · 28/01/2020 21:50

Love this thread! Did anybody read a series called Riders by Samantha Alexander?

randomsabreuse · 28/01/2020 22:10

I've got 1 and 3 of that series in my book case! Ready for my DD!

I read a nice random pony book called "Pippa's Mystery Horse". About a girl who rescued a horse marooned on an island and took him home. I enjoyed that book (think it might be from a series?)
