It’s a bit niche. There were 3 young women who were looking after a hunting /eventing yard and I think one of them had to ride in a point to point race to win some money. Possibly on a horse with one eye who may or may not have been a racehorse in his youth.

The name Henrietta rings a bell.

Please help me with my nostalgic hankering for books from my youth!

Rings a bell - Red Arrow? Grey Arrow? Or was that a different implausible but enjoyable teenage girl and horse story?!

NutBiscuit · 24/01/2020 16:41

OMG mumwon I LOVED those books!! Had forgotten all about them!

I know the ones! I know one of the books was called Eventer's Dream and the set was Eventer's Trilogy. I have them so I'll check the names and the author for you.

LemonySippet · 24/01/2020 16:54

Eventer's Trilogy: Eventer's Dream, A Hoof in the Door, Ticket to Ride, by Caroline Akrill.

Still a favourite of mine, all the pages fall out every time I read them!

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 24/01/2020 16:59

Yes!!!!! Thanks. Bloody brilliant. Wonder if they’re available on kindle.

While we’re on it, any other good horsey books? I was a massive fan of the Jinny ones, bloody amazing they were. And the Jill books too.

Now I’m thinking of another series but I can’t remember anything about it at all, hopefully it’ll come back to me. More trekking based I think, possibly with some boys in it. Not much to go on 😂

So it goes 'Eventer's Dream', 'A Hoof In The Door', and 'Ticket To Ride'. Written by Caroline Akrill.

Also I LOVE how fast I got the answer, mumsnet really comes into its own sometimes 😀

I remember this trilogy so well! Elaine worked in the yard for Henrietta and her family and she wasn’t paid so she got the one eyed horse, who was a known a bolter, in lieu of wages and competed him to win a place with her actual event horse called Another Legend.

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 24/01/2020 17:22

Yes Another Legend!! And who was that retired professional chap who took her under his wing...

I read loads of horsey fiction as a child!

Loved the Jinny books, was Shantih the horse?

Also The Black Stallion was awesome.

2020BetterBeBetter · 24/01/2020 17:27

I can’t think of his name but I might have to buy the books to reread again now!

Jinny’s horses were Black Boy and Rapide. Shantih was from the Horse In A Million series.

vampirethriller · 24/01/2020 17:27

Follyfoot books were good as well, by Monica Dickens

Sexnotgender · 24/01/2020 17:29

Oh I’m confused about names! It’s been a while.

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 24/01/2020 17:33

No Jinny did have Shantih, Black Boy was Jill I think?

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 24/01/2020 17:33

YY to Black Stallion 👍🏻

mumwon · 24/01/2020 17:34

Monica Edwards "wish for a pony" & the punchbowl farm series & Enid Bagnold "National Velvet" & Ruby Ferguson "Jill has two ponies" series

OldSpeclkledHen · 24/01/2020 17:35

Oooh yes, The Black Stallion!
I loved the Brumby books!

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 24/01/2020 17:37

It was Jill who had Black Boy and Rapide. Jinny had Shantih in the Jinny at Finmory series of which Horse in a Million was one book.

The Eventer’s Dream trilogy is on Kindle, I’ve got it! I didn’t think The Comet (the bolter) only had one eye though.

OP I was the trekking series the Star Riders on the Moor by one of the Pullein-Thompsons (Josephine, I think)? Or maybe the series by another P-T where Sandy and her brother help Jake with his trekking business? That was Ponies in the Valley, Ponies in Peril and Ponies on the Trail. The Star Riders one had more boys in though, and Frances the protagonist and her sister used to help their friends Heather and Mick with their family trekking business.

I still re-read my pony books regularly, as you can tell!

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 24/01/2020 17:39

Ponies in Peril rings a bell, thank you!!!! There are going to be kindle purchases a plenty this evening, gutted I don’t still have the originals...

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 24/01/2020 17:40

Maybe it was Nelson that had one eye? Which one of them would always slip a stifle?!

OP posts:
2020BetterBeBetter · 24/01/2020 17:40

Of course! I got Jinny and Jill mixed up. Definitely need to start rereading these.

GothMummy · 24/01/2020 17:41

Your book was written by Caroline Akrill, the eventers trilogy. Loved them!

MayorPrentiss · 24/01/2020 17:43

The K M Peyton pony books were always good. The hero was called Ruth I think. And Flambards of course. I devoured pony books as a child, so much nostalgia!

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 24/01/2020 17:44

There aren’t many of the P-T books on Kindle yet, but the first three books in JPT’s West Barsetshire Pony Club series (Noel & Henry et alia) are available unabridged - these are probably my favourites of the entire Pullein-Thompson oeuvre.
