Help me find this horsey fiction book - please

It’s a bit niche. There were 3 young women who were looking after a hunting /eventing yard and I think one of them had to ride in a point to point race to win some money. Possibly on a horse with one eye who may or may not have been a racehorse in his youth.

The name Henrietta rings a bell.

Please help me with my nostalgic hankering for books from my youth!

Dr MaryMalone

*I loved so many of these as a little girl but I’ve got another one I wonder if anyone can name.

Girl with a pony who lived near the sea and would school on the beach. There was a plot about using old smuggling routes to smuggle something illegal and she found out about it. At one point the pony got colic and her dad sat up all night rubbing its ears....*

These were books by Monica Edwards, called the Romney Marsh series, starting with 'Wish for a Pony'. Tamzin and Rissa are the main characters.

DrMaryMalone · 25/01/2020 05:07

@Freyanna not the Romney Marsh books although I did read those. I had a Google while up with my teething toddler just now and found it! It was Pippa and the Midnight Ponies

Resisting the temptation to buy all these books on kindle... Definitely have some lurking for when DD is old enough though!

Did anyone else read a US eventing based one - main character breaks her wrist, finds an ex racer and schools him on to beat his ex owner. Possibly Star...

Also one with Northern Spy - yard owner's horse that the star doesn't want to ride because she loves her horse more?

Another pony mad but not allowed to ride person here - had about 50 my little ponies as a substitute!

Love the fact that lots of you still have the books. My parents wouldn’t let me take all mine when we moved countries. I had to chose so went more for the non fiction ones. Horse mad since I was 18 months old according to my mum. Neither mum nor dad were interested but had several friends with ponies at different times and eventually by two twists of fate I got my own at 14. I had to leave him four later and it broke my heart. I always planned to go back but life took another turn which meant I didn’t.
Otter I also worked on a horse stud for a bit. I loved. Loved the shows and loved the foals even though I had black and blue shins from having to dose those with the skitters. I did get a pony for my kids from there later on. Strangely she was almost an identical pony but smaller than my first. I chose neither they were given to me. The sort of things that happen in books.
Love all the memories from you all.

Did anyone read Rosina Copper? I borrowed it from the library when I was about 12.
I love the Three Jays and the Silver Brumby. I had an American one about mustangs too. It had beautiful illustrations. I will have to have a look later as I think I brought that one with me. I have just counted and those books did ten house moves and three countries in ten years!

Bowerbird5 · 25/01/2020 06:26

Did any of you go on to read Dick Francis? As I loved a good murder mystery and horses I discovered them when I was about 17 or 18 and loved them.

The Summer of the great Secret by Monica Edwards. Although I don't think in any of ME the ponies get colic. There is milk fever (cows) in Fire at the Punchbowl and the tree falling on Moonstone in Black Hunting Whip.

There was a Monica Edwards one where they were all somehow isolated at a farm and ended up using carb soda for everything. @StartupRepair

No Entry Castle Farm goes into siege with Foot and Mouth all around. Tamsin and friends cross the barrier to join them, which turns out to be a good thing when Mr Merrow injures himself and has to go (with Mrs Merrow) to hospital. Then they have to find the ewes who are stolen...

My Favourite is The White Riders. It would make a fantastic film.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/01/2020 07:01

The riders series by Samantha Alexander is quite ... Inappropriate when you read it back. The main character is 14 and the love interest/superstar rider is over 18 and he's very forthright when it comes to kissing her and stuff, telling her what to do etc and being rather controlling. Made me uncomfortable when i read it back a few years ago ... I don't remember it being so gross.

Allington · 25/01/2020 08:38

@Amyspickledlime The Horsemasters - Don Stanford.

One of the books I kept Grin

Flyingarcher · 25/01/2020 08:53

@SmilingHappyBeaver It is J P-T. With Henry and Erica? Girl's name is foggy and it is in The Radley Riding Club and One Day Event series. First one was Six Ponies.

Ok. Favourite ponies/ horses. For me: Cascade in Romney Marsh series - the drawings of him are beautiful. Black Boy in Jill. Adonis in Prince Among Ponies. The Black horse she has in Riding with The Lintons. Daybreak - think was a grey and was owned by a Christina.

Did anyone else wonder which of the three ponies in 'Three Ponies' they would keep. I think I tended towards Serenade.

Amyspickledlime · 25/01/2020 08:53

Allington thank you! 👍👍👍
I have been searching with no luck for years.
They worked SO hard in that book didn't they? You have absolutely made my day 😀

Undercoverworker06 · 25/01/2020 08:56

LemonGingerCakes another reader of Silver Snaffles here, and no, I've never known anyone else who's read it either!

SilentSarey · 25/01/2020 09:02

In Silver Snaffles one of the ponies Through The Dark Corner was called Paul. I think he was grey.

And there was an awful pair called Fidgit and Funkie, brother and sister who were unkind to ponies and rode badly 😁

SilentSarey · 25/01/2020 09:05

..... and I just found it in paperback and it’s £52 so I won’t be buying it 😕

LemonySippet · 25/01/2020 09:12

Anyone who wants to replace any of their collection, there's a bst group on Facebook called 'Our old pony books' and a sister group for reminiscing called 'Our old pony books chat'. Enjoy!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/01/2020 09:24

Does anyone remember a book about a girl called October who had a palomino? I think she kept it on a houseboat at some point in the story.

user5656 · 25/01/2020 09:27

I had loads of pony books as a child.
Some I sold to make pocket money but I had a few favourites, inc the Jill series, that I would never part with. They were in storage at my parents' and my mum lent them to a neighbour's daughter then 5hey moved house and I never got them back.
I I've never forgiven her since

Gotthetshirt23 · 25/01/2020 09:34

I have two copies of Silver Snaffles Grin

Gotthetshirt23 · 25/01/2020 09:35

@SilentSarey
I used Abebooks book finding service to get mine
I've got the old hardback and a fidra paperback
Don't give up !

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/01/2020 13:19

There’s a Jill appreciation society on Facebook

Dauphinois · 25/01/2020 13:45

I loved Jill and Jinny as a child, then graduated to Jilly Cooper at about 15.

Does anyone remember Moorland Mousie? A little pony born on Exmoor then sold to be a riding pony? It's such a lovely story with beautiful pencil drawn illustrations - I loved that book and I've still got it somewhere!

AndyMurraysCat · 25/01/2020 13:53

I remember that book! I still have it I think, along with 100’s of others. Mine were stored in my parents’ loft for years because I didn’t want to have to re-buy them if and when I had children. Now my DDs have enjoyed some of them & I intend keeping them forever 🙂🙂🙂

hazandduck · 25/01/2020 13:55

I’ve found my people on this thread! I cried when Patricia Leitch (author of Jinny and Shantih) died a couple of years ago. Going to see the real Finmory House is on my bucket list.

Also loved Jacky Jumps To The Top and My First Pony.

Adored the Swallow series because I was always a bit of a Rowan with talented confident horsy friends and I was this timid little mouse who never had my own horse to ride.

And the Black Pony Inn series by one of the Pullein Thompsons!

I love pony books 😍

hazandduck · 25/01/2020 13:56

Oh and yes loved Jill. I remember the descriptions of what they ate always made me hungry! And there were twins Sybil and Frankie which I still think are really cool names for twins!

Lexplorer · 25/01/2020 13:56

Yes, there's was a Jill FB page where we all read the books together and discussed them. Unfortunately I couldn't finish the first one as Jill's Gymkhana was a travesty of the original! Great chunks missing, names, situations all changed etc. Poor show. Apart from Jill, I mainly loved Diana and Josephine PT's books but didn't get on with Christine's for some reason.

ANuggetOfTheFinestGreen · 25/01/2020 13:57

@TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig OHMY! I have that anthology of pony stories somewhere! There was one that gave me bad dreams about Scottish ghosts with Claymore swords!
