What do you watch on TV with your 8-11 year old boys?

Because I'm struggling to find something that they enjoy which is still interesting to me.

They're staying up later so I want to be able to flump on the sofa occasionally and watch something as a family.

But there's only so many nature docs I can stand!

IS there anything young-boy-friendly and enjoyable for adults on freeview / netflix / amazon?

Try the goes wrong show, so funny!

AnnaMariaDreams · 23/01/2020 19:17

Dr Who from the start of Christopher Ecclestone
Merlin

DamnItsSevenAM · 23/01/2020 19:18

We used to love Lego Masters, don't know if it's available anywhere? Good Mythical Morning on YouTube is pretty funny, especially the older ones.

The horrible histories movie is out on prime

megletthesecond · 23/01/2020 19:20

Top gear. Endless repeats of it on Dave.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/01/2020 19:20

Mine are girls but enjoy Guy Martin, and Red Bull channel (favourites are Ice Cross and cliff jumping)

They also love Bake Off

WooMaWang · 23/01/2020 19:22

DS2 (10) loves any sort of skills based competition. Particularly if it involves cooking/baking. He likes bake off and Zumbos just desserts (Netflix) He liked LEGO masters on C4 too.

But he will watch glass blowing (on Netflix) and other weird things, so long as it actually requires skill. Well, so long as it's not dancing. He's not keen on that at all.

He also likes watching odd extreme sports (of the kind sponsored by Red Bull generally) on YouTube. He loves soapbox derby and freestyle motocross. That's usually reasonably interesting to watch with him.

I draw the line at youtubers playing video games, however. He can watch that on his own. 😂

Ftumch · 23/01/2020 19:24

Doctor Who, The Simpsons, The Goes Wrong Show, His Dark Materials, anything with David Attenborough or Steve Backshall. He quite likes quiz shows like Pointless too.

WooMaWang · 23/01/2020 19:24

Try the red bull soapbox derby @Aroundtheworldin80moves. The commentary is hilarious. Plus it's kind of absurd. Especially the bit where they perform at the start.

Temporaryanonymity · 23/01/2020 19:25

We all enjoyed Lost in Space on Netflix and Just Add Magic on Prime.

WooMaWang · 23/01/2020 19:26

Oh yes. DS loves those twats on top gear/the grand tour messing around in stupid vehicles doing stupid things. That's a good pre-pubescent boy call @megletthesecond

TulipCat · 23/01/2020 19:26

Dr Who, extreme sports like cliff diving competitions, Merlin, Supervet, Junior Bake Off, His Dark Materials, Naruto are all popular in our house

Lionsleepstonight · 23/01/2020 19:29

Bake off, the voice, the apprentice, masked singer.
Hmmm i notice a theme. Have also got his dark materials, best home cook.

Bugbeau · 23/01/2020 19:30

Cookery programmes (either tv ones like master chef or bake off or YouTube- he likes French guy cooking), Danny McAskill or Fabio Wibmer on YouTube, Strictly, Dancing on Ice, Britain’s Got Talent or any other performance based shows. We all enjoy horrible histories. Given the choice I’d probably choose to watch films with him over TV, but these options are the least tedious for me!

poolnoodle · 23/01/2020 19:30

bump before I have to watch Blue Planet again...

ncqtime · 23/01/2020 19:34

Mine enjoys watching formula 1, there's a documentary series about it on Netflix that's not bad. He's also into YouTube to watch ppl play games (awful stuff I try to remember to make him watch on mute if he's allowed at all). We enjoyed his dark materials too. He's currently watching Z nation on Netflix though not sure what the age rating is on that. Oh and the odd ambulance/police show on BBC or channel 4 but definitely watch these together and be ready to switch off if they're eg going into a detailed account of a rape.

PandaG · 23/01/2020 19:39

Mine older now but then - Dr Who, yes to baking/cookery competitions, Robot Wars, also PG films from my childhood- Back to the Future type things. Gentle whodunnits so old Agatha Christie ( not the last few years of BBC adaptations, inappropriate) but Joan Hickson Miss Marples .

TulipCat · 23/01/2020 19:40

Forgot to add Race Across the World and Crystal Maze.

HugeAckmansWife · 23/01/2020 19:42

Merlin. Really have been enjoying that. Also F1.. He's a huge fan. Other than that it's mostly bollocks on YouTube but I ban him from anything utterly pointless like Morgz or Sis v Bro. Origins Explained is good or the HH quiz game. Also clips from various musicals he's seen and enjoyed.

Chocolateteabag · 23/01/2020 19:51

Another Top Gear house here.

We also watch the Pottery Throw down, Bake Off and most of the Home Improvement/Garden improvement shows together too (DIY SOS, George & his various House or Shed programmes)

TwoZeroTwoZero · 23/01/2020 20:41

Abandoned Engineering
Engineering Disasters
Operation Ouch
Horrible Histories
Inside the Factory
999 What's Your Emergency
Inside the Ambulance
Helicopter Heroes
Great British Bake Off (the old version)

ActualHornist · 23/01/2020 21:26

Mine love the soap box derby too!

Mine are 8 and 11 also - we like the pottery showdown on 4 at the moment, dark materials, bake off. Basically what everyone else has said Grin

Bluetoothbitch · 23/01/2020 21:33

My ds a little older but enjoy super girl, saving lives at sea, call the midwife and top gear.
