Is anyone else having trouble streaming music on an Alexa device?

I've been struggling all day to play music using the Echo Dot in the kitchen. The upstairs ones seem to be ok though

Is anyone else having trouble?

Sorry to ask a daft question, have you turned it on and off at the plug?

filka · 21/01/2020 16:27

sometimes you just need to reset the wifi - just unplug it, wait 10 secs and plug it (her?) back in.

lucysmam · 21/01/2020 16:28

Um, no. I actually haven't! I have sworn at it a lot & told it to piss off I'll use my phone instead though Blush

It's unplugged, I'll try again in a bit

The best thing is when it chooses a random song to play instead of the one you asked for! That's really good for swearing.

I have a routine set up with mine where I say good morning, she says good morning back, reads me the weather and then puts Radio 2 on. She's suddenly started playing the Welsh BBC Radio 2 instead of the English one even though nothing has changed. I've even tried resetting the routine but no, she's determined that I listen to the Welsh one! (We live in England. I have never listened to Welsh radio.)

DH regularly swears at her - especially when she won't listen to his polite request for the Friday Night Comedy podcast on Monday nights, and to set a sleeptimer - but she will then happily listen to my polite request to do the same 30 seconds later Grin

Yes - mine at home was playing up this morning and the one we have at work was also dodgy today. Off and on again solved both though. Maybe she was having a bad day!

lucysmam · 21/01/2020 17:11

It's plugged in & working again...dd2 is making it do animal noises and fart

@MeanwhileAtNumber98 glad it's not just me, it's done my head in today!

DH regularly swears at her

Actually I've been very curious about this but never asked anyone...I'm quite polite to Alexa, so it's "Alexa, BBC Radio 4 please". But if I'm across the room and she doesn't respond, I speak more sharply and without please.

Sometimes I think, this is just a computer, why am I being polite at all? But it's just my nature, I struggle to speak differently to how I would ask a real person.

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 21/01/2020 18:05

@lucysmam strange isn't it? I was getting angry with her this morning.

BiddyPop · 22/01/2020 10:11

filka in our case, DH is generally polite when he asks too, it's when she "sorry, I don't know that one" to what is a regular request that he starts swearing - especially funny when I ask the same thing in a slightly different way and she immediately responds with the correct thing. But yes, we are both strangely polite to what is, essentially, just a computer.

(We are polite in general as well - not JUST to Alexa!! ) Grin

TellMeItsNotTrue · 22/01/2020 10:17

Is that one further away from your router? One of ours sometimes plays up but it's in a slightly iffy area for WiFi

Otherwise, no ours are fine other than when I play certain albums she likes and she will play her favourite song repeatedly until I tell her next, and then start the album again when it finishes 😂 I let her play her favourite song around 3 times, she obviously likes it and it's only fair she gets a choice sometimes 🤣

golddustwomen · 22/01/2020 10:23

Piss off I'll use my phone 😂😂 brilliant
Alexa fucks me off on a daily basis.. I don't know if it's my thick brummie accent but my god she never understands what I'm saying!!

spiderlight · 22/01/2020 10:38

@filka - my DS laughs at me when I say please to his Alexa but I simply can't not!

Qwerty543 · 22/01/2020 11:37

I keep setting an alarm on DDs dot and it's very hit or miss whether it goes off in the morning. Really irritating.

Squigean · 22/01/2020 11:43

Ds got an Echo Dot and I've notice she doesn't recognise politeness. Make a shopping list (not my first choice in method, but DS mad to try it out). After each item she asks 'anything else' (something similar) to which I said 'no thanks', and Alexa added 'no thanks' to the list!! Only a curt 'no' worked.

lucysmam · 22/01/2020 20:24

Squigean that did make me laugh Grin

TellMeItsNotTrue, erm, it's probably about as close as the one in the front bedroom - albeit in a different direction. Maybe it doesn't like being on the odd corner shelf thingy in my kitchen though, I'll try it elsewhere.

It thanked me for listening to Hallam FM this morning, that made me smile. It doesn't bother when I listen to Heart Yorkshire!

I'm always polite to it too; quite often get "I hope you're having a good [whatever day it is]" in return.
