Stop preaching and shoving veganism in my face. Enough now

Just found out a Vegan documentary was preached at my teenager at youth club
It's a choice grown adults should be allowed to make. But such a restrictive diet should not be preached at growing children who could also be vulnerable to eating problems.
I've never preached my diet at anyone but this has been shoved in my face continuously. Judgement when I order animal products in restaurants, advertising, now my rapidly growing young son is to eat without milk, cheese, eggs, butter etc
I'm absolutely fuming
There is no hard science to back the health benefits. The environmental impact is dubious.
Sure I understand if you are an animal lover but that's still an individual choice.

It's a rather unpalatable truth, I know, but the reality is that our current diet is not sustainable for the planet, so we need to change.

Humans are omnivores and most of the planet already have a substantial proportion of their diet as non-animal products.
My most regular packed lunch is homemade hummus and crudités. Today I had that, a snack of pistachios, and a butternut squash and coconut milk curry and rice for supper. My annoying colleague would describe that as a “vegan day” or “plant based” day, and pat himself on the back and tell us all what a good flexi-vegan he is Hmm but I’ve been eating many meals like that before I’d even heard those terms, and so were most humans.

Yes, it will be best for the planet and our bodies if people in the west raise the amount of fibre and plant based proteins they eat, which will then lower their animal product consumption. The focus should be on that, not on excluding all animal products resulting in the need for dietary supplements.

Anger and denial are early emotions in the change curve. Later sadness and then acceptance. I think you are going through this stage. A lot of people are as they realise what they thought was normal and their 'right' needs to be reconsidered. It's not easy

Wheresthesandman · 20/01/2020 22:13

So if he doesn’t now suddenly want to become vegan, I don’t understand what the issue is. It clearly hasn’t affected him that much, has it?

.. no word about the crops that needs to be grown so we can eat / drink more soya & co and where they will be grown.)

A large proportion of the crops that we grow (including the soya) are fed to animals, so that’s probably why they didn’t mention it.

@faithinnature1
I totally agree with that, I’m Vegan and my uncle was the worst critic. I’d never mention it but he would always make snarky comments about it.

After a few months he started saying stuff like “you know I’m only joking, I’d be vegan if I could! I’m just took lazy to cook!”

Then he started asking me what sorts of things I ate

Now he’s been vegan for 2 months and loves it! He’s also lost a good amount of weight with it and says he feels energised Grin

Copperleaves · 20/01/2020 22:22

In what way is bread not vegan? Confused
There is far more meat based advertising than there is for vegan food. You might notice the latter more because it is more unusual.

Turquiose · 20/01/2020 22:26

I agree with you OP and I'm a vegetarian! I'm suck of schools telling my dcs about healthy eating altogether. They're so scared after these talks about getting fat they hardly eat anything and one is underweight!

AlexaShutUp · 20/01/2020 22:28

The fact is that vegans make many of us non-vegans feel guilty about our choices. I know I do. My compromise is to eat more plant-based food and reduce my dairy consumption. (I gave up eating meat more than thirty years ago.) I know it isn’t enough but it’s the best I can do right now.

Turquiose · 20/01/2020 22:29

Pressed too soon. It's a parents job to teach them nutrition etc. If they're overweight then it's the health services. Veganism isn't something that schools should be promoting. It's a lifestyle choice or sometimes part of a religion. Fed up with the general fashion to be vegan at all. Now they're pushing it down the dcs throats.

Turquiose · 20/01/2020 22:32

I don't feel guilty about not being vegan and I have never ever tried to make a meat eater guilty about not being a vegetarian. In fact they always ask me why I'm veggie and I get fed up with it. I don't ask why they eat meat. Its their choice and mine is mine.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/01/2020 22:42

In what way is bread not vegan

It normally contains milk as an ingredient. So not vegan.

Copperleaves · 20/01/2020 22:55

I've just looked through all the bread in our bread bin - only one containing milk were some brioche rolls, and they contain egg too so obviously not vegan. I don't think milk in bread is common - not pan loaves anyway! And when I make bread there's no milk in it either.

Borkins · 20/01/2020 23:10

I don't feel guilty in the slightest. I'm not in denial etc
Veganism is a lifestyle choice. Not a scientifically proven healthy or morally sound alternative.
Absolute bollocks to being superior because you eat no dairy Hmm

Namestranger · 20/01/2020 23:14

There is some research suggesting it has health and environmental benefits.

cricketmum84 · 20/01/2020 23:15

Seriously people just don't engage. OP is obviously just a total anti-vegan and will argue until she is blue in the face regardless of what anyone says.

It's quite sad in a way because it's quite hard for vegans to constantly be dismissed as ridiculous by this small group of people who can't accept someone else's lifestyle choice.

Nobody said they were "superior" this is just your hang up OP. Nobody else's. Really not sure why it pisses you off so much that I don't order the steak.

LynetteScavo · 20/01/2020 23:33

Veganism isn't a restrictive diet, it's a lifestyle.

Nobody preached at you, OP, your DS was shown a documentary about a lifestyle. It's interesting and educational to know how other people live.

I would only be unhappy about it if the documentary contained inaccuracies or false claims.

Borkins · 20/01/2020 23:34

I am not anti-vegan. I'm completely at ease/happy for any adult to adopt this diet and lifestyle. I also accept there is SOME research which suggests health benefits.
But not quantitive research with large sample sizes, cohorts with variables accounted for etc. Scientists aren't sure. There is just as much evidence that dairy and meat have health benefits. People cherry pick.

Until there is hard science I don't think it should be promoted to young people. They are vulnerable.
I just think we live in an era where fashion, opinion etc outweigh fact and science. We see it in politics now.
And I don't know how many times I have to say that I HAVE been preached to. I've had someone look at disgust at my chicken broth and ask how I can eat meat when I'm into fitness. I went on a weekend away, a training camp and sat next to two Vegans each meal who told me meat was disgusting.
It has become a million dollar industry. It makes money. People think it will make them thinner so it has been hijacked by the diet industry.
I want proper evidence that's all.

JasonPollack · 20/01/2020 23:38

Lord calm down and go Vegan already!

JasonPollack · 20/01/2020 23:39

Do you also hate "Snowflakes" and "Milenials" and think Political Correctness has just gone Too Far?

AmelieTaylor · 20/01/2020 23:44

that's still an individual choice

Yes & your teenager IS an INDIVIDUAL.

He’s at school to get an education and that’s not just 1+1=2 it’s critical thinking & decision making.

Being Vegan is perfectly healthy.

There’s PLENTY about meat & fish that’s not healthy- why doesn’t that bother you?

Borkins · 20/01/2020 23:44

Erm no I'm a big advocate of political correctness. WTF?! Odd thing to say

OP posts:
Borkins · 20/01/2020 23:47

Why would I hate millennials? My kids are millennials!

OP posts:
JasonPollack · 20/01/2020 23:49

Because you sound like a ragey gammon babe Flowers

Borkins · 20/01/2020 23:52

Yes it's been scientifically proven that too much red meat is linked to bowel cancer. That processed meat has risks etc. I accept that. Because it's true.
I hardly eat any red meat to be fair
I also accept people might not want to eat animal products for moral reasons. But then that is a moral choice.
Not flying is a moral choice, doesn't mean you should berate all those that fly. Life isn't black and white

OP posts:
mindfulmam · 20/01/2020 23:53

I just don't get the point of this thread.
Just don't be vegan if you hate it so much it's not up to us to show you evidence! Make your own choices.

Borkins · 20/01/2020 23:53

So women aren't allowed to be angry? Hmm
Makes us ragey does it - next you will be telling me I'm hysterical...
