Any mums do karate?

My DS has been doing karate for a few months and I'm considering whether to start it myself! I dance once per week but could do with another physical activity to build into my routine to build my fitness.

Any experiences to share?

I haven't done it since becoming a mum, but did it even in my 30s. It's great exercise, I really enjoyed it. The only downsides for me were grading (all too serious for me!) and that the club was quite small and there were children in the group/class. I'm yet to find a club where it's just adults or more serious young people. As a teacher, I'm keen to have hobbies where I don't have to see kids Grin

I do a lower impact variation of taekwondo which I love. Variety of kicks and punches. Started in my fifties and now about halfway to black belt. I’ve actually dragged my teenager with me rather than the reverse! I find it really invigorating - I really enjoy feeling powerful and it’s a great stress release (a minute full impact shield attack sorts out a bad day no end) I would suggest trying a few variants and seeing what works with you - most clubs let you have a few free sessions. You can also assesses who you would be training with - my group range from 16 - 80, which is great, as I was originally very worried about being with a load of fit 20 somethings.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. My son going to a karate club so I'm thinking of trying out there first. The instructors are nice, and includes a lady in her 60s who is 4th dan!

There is a specific teens/adults class so I wouldn't have to join the children's class!

I just need to get over the hurdle going to try it. Eeek!

I did karate for years and keep thinking I want to get back to it now the kids are a bit older. It’s fantastic exercise and great stress relief.

Give it a go! I got to 1st kyu (the grade before black belt) in my teens but gave up - life/university/A Levels got in the way. I have since re-started with the same club my daughter attends, but in a session for adults and teens. It's great and the teens are all very friendly, and serious about what we are learning, so I like having them there.

Ahh thanks, I'll have a chat to them when I take my DS this week.
