Hi all

I’ve just had smear test results back and it says no abnormal cells but I have HPV. I’m sure all is fine and dandy and I’m being ridiculous, but last year a parent died of cancer and I’m really wanting some support.

The pamphlet GP has sent says it’s very common and 90% treats itself. Please can someone say if they’ve had it and basically tell me to stop worrying.

I always see “I need a handhold” threads and never thought I’d need one over something as stupid as this! Have just been in the big C world for so long and now grieving from it.

Oh and pamphlet also says you can get warts from it!? I’m in a very monogamous relationship for the last two years and think part of my anger is that didn’t think I’d get it for some reason. Am being ridiculous

I tested positive for it two smears in a row. This time round it has gone. I am also in a monogamous relationship and hadn’t expected it but the nurse I saw was brilliant and really reassuring that many people (men and women) can have it without knowing.

Hopefully yours will clear up on its own as well. But if you are worried then I would see your practice nurse (or GP if you can get an appointment) for some reassurance.

Thank you - I’ve found a lot of threads on MN about it now and am feeling a bit more reassured. Think this says more about me being on edge with grief and should probably speak to someone about that! Interestingly my GP did my smear this time, and when I asked him various questions about HPV he didn’t really know anything about it. I might suggest to the surgery doing more research on it so people feel more confident with them as a first port of call for queries - Google is not always a good idea!
