Smashed phone

My son has been saving his Christmas and birthday money for a new iPhone 11. I bought it on a 2 year contract at the beginning of November.
My son fell off his moped after hitting a pothole and the phone screen was broken back and front.
Took it to a repair shop and was quoted £150 for front screen and £220 in total for both.

I agreed to this and collected the phone.
When I arrived home and my son turned his phone on it came up with a message from apple saying non apple parts had been used. Also the screen glass was too small for the screen, therefore you could see the back light all the time.
Went to apple and they told me that they could repair it as long a 6 key components from the phone were still there but advised that as the phone was only a couple of months old that it wouldn’t be a problem.
Went back to original repair shop and asked for a refund, they gave a refund and gave me the phone back - not in the condition it was when it went in for repair.
Took the phone to apple, the said wth has the repair shop done, that there’s no way they could take the phone in and that it was the worst bodge job they’d ever seen.
Went back to original store and asked why they didn’t inform me that they use non apple parts.
He said we told you that and that we told you there was a risk.
This is an outright lie, the just quoted the price and told to return after 2 hours to collect.
I asked why he wasn’t honest from the start and inform me of the risk and let me know they were using cheap parts for repair.
The guy refused to speak to us and just virtually threw the phone back at me.
So where do I stand.
🙁🙁🙁😔
I can’t afford to write off a £1k phone.

Write a letter to the shop and send it recorded delivery. Give them a deadline to respond and say what you want them to do. Tell them failure to respond will result in you filing in the small claims court, and follow through if necessary. Apple won't help you much as they always say to get your phone fixed by an approved shop or direct through them.
For future reference, insure a phone that cost £1000, and negate the need to take it to a dodgy mobile phone shop to be fixed. Our phones are insured on our house insurance for £10 a month.

Fuck me sideways, I usually work in software and I can even tell that that phone has had the backstreet Botox treatmeant of iphones.

vegas888 · 17/01/2020 23:14

Thanks for your reply. I didn’t even think to ask if they were genuine apple parts as I foolishly assumed they were as the cost was so expensive.
Yes I will definitely add it to my household insurance.

I asked where the back of the phone had gone, the guy said that’s normal as we had to laser it off 🤔😖

Agree with the above but will add my hapennorth that I phones (my android phone won't stoop to it!) have an air of cult over functionality about them.

Likethebattle · 17/01/2020 23:26

Always, always take to an Apple shop for repair. These cheap places are not worth it and invalidate any warranty on the
Phone. Sometimes it’s more expensive but it’s better.

Likethebattle · 17/01/2020 23:27

Why did you give them the phone a second time?

vegas888 · 18/01/2020 04:54

I gave them the phone back so they could put it but to how it was when I took it in and then get Apple to repair it which is what I should of done in the first place.

Oh man. That’s awful.

I know it’s too late now, but in future pay for AppleCare. They would’ve replaced the phone for £79.

Can you claim on your house insurance?

#1 rule when owning an apple phone. Get absolutely all repairs and maintenance carries out at apple only. Phone repair shops might fix the phone but apple will completely void it if not done by themselves.

Sorry this has happened to you OP :( hope you can claim for it on your house insurance, I think a lot of people forget that they cover things like this sometimes! :)

vegas888 · 18/01/2020 05:27

I’ve checked my house insurance and they’ve said it’s not covered. 😖😖😫
