Does the mild weather this year bother you?

I was chatting to a friend today about the crapness of the wet weather we were having but how it's eerily mild for January. She said she's quite worried about climate change as a result. What are your thoughts?

Just grateful I don;t have to go about my daily life in fog and icy conditions....We seem to have lost all seasons though and I don;t know if that is down to climate reasons or just natural evolvement.

CryptoFascist · 16/01/2020 17:14

Absolutely, it's very concerning.

willothewispa · 16/01/2020 17:15

No, not really snow is more common in February and March I think.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/01/2020 17:23

It's not the lack of snow, it's the fact that I've had to wear a coat only 3 days so far (due to mad rain).

It's just not cold at all.

pineing · 16/01/2020 17:26

Not looking forward to the pest explosion in the garden come the spring. A long cold spell kills a lot of them off, but this year the little blighters will still be there. Waiting to start a plague.

Minty82 · 16/01/2020 17:29

I’m concerned that it’s a symptom of climate change, and I feel a bit cheated of a proper winter, but Laurie where do you live that you haven’t had to wear a coat?! It’s not that mild!

MorrisZapp · 16/01/2020 17:30

Eh take it you don't live in Edinburgh?

I don't think it's been particularly mild here.
It's not been unusually cold either but definitely not been warm.
The summer was maybe a little longer this year but not remarkable so.

I'm in Scotland tho so I don't know what it's been like down south

managedmis · 16/01/2020 17:41

Live in Canada and its the same here. No where near as cold as usual

PineappleDanish · 16/01/2020 17:44

It's cold in Scotland, well colder than the double figures you're getting in London. But not freezing cold as it often is at this time of year. Don't think i've had to scrape the car in 2020.

Footiefan2019 · 16/01/2020 17:45

It’s too wet for me

Wet and windy are the worst conditions for me I’d prefer snow and ice

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/01/2020 17:46

It’s been very mild here hardly a day that’s gone below 10 in the last month.
It’s a worry, and as above it won’t kill of the pests.

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2020 17:47

It’s odd to still see roses.

I prefer colder temperatures in winter, finally gets cold in a couple of days.

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2020 17:48

It snowed a lot only two years ago. 2017

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/01/2020 17:48

I'm concerned about pests in the garden too, need a prolonged cold spell to keep the numbers down. I've hardly worn a coat either, I've only worn my thick winter one a couple of times, just used my thin waterproof one to keep dry.

BecauseReasons · 16/01/2020 17:48

I'm a tad concerned, but then one mild winter doesn't necessarily harbour doom. I'm also wondering if we'll have a cold snap in February.

BecauseReasons · 16/01/2020 17:49

My daffodils are all sprouting. It's very weird.

tobee · 16/01/2020 17:50

I feel like we've had a fair few mild winters recently...

Although in London it's due to be 7 daytime and -1 night this weekend.

brittanyfairies · 16/01/2020 17:50

Yes, it was 14 degrees here today. It's rained constantly since October. My house was flooded on 22 december, I'm just starting to get back on my feet and it's fairly obvious it will flood again tonight. It's so stressful

Pipandmum · 16/01/2020 17:51

Uh Australia? O course you should be concerned! It's also very warm on the east coast of US when it should be snowy. And I watch Life Below Zero about people who live a subsistence lifestyle in Alaska and they all have commented on how there's increasingly less ice (which they need to get around).

speakout · 16/01/2020 17:51

Yes I am a little disconcerted.

Lots of my plants in the garden are putting up spring shoots, I saw some birds collecting nesting materials yesterday- it is way too early - still only January.

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2020 17:55

Lots of shoots here, I gave up waiting for roses to stop blooming and cut back. Now small shoots which means they haven’t stopped growing.

It may be something that is more frequent, or not, but it will be eery if it’s a change we see as time goes on.

Rockbird · 16/01/2020 17:57

Climate change aside, it bothers me because soon we'll have the shit hot weather back and I haven't had my winter yet! I've worn a coat once this year, my scarves and gloves are still packed away.

willothewispa · 16/01/2020 17:58

We had plants much further on last year, the garden isn't doing anything this year yet. The birds seem to be more active though, the dawn chorus is louder now and more birds are joining in. It's been colder, we've had to have the heating on more than usual and it's been cold even in bed.
