Does the mild weather this year bother you?

I was chatting to a friend today about the crapness of the wet weather we were having but how it's eerily mild for January. She said she's quite worried about climate change as a result. What are your thoughts?

It’s not mild here in Scotland, it’s freezing! And lashing down constantly

lanbro · 16/01/2020 18:49

I'm in the north east and I can assure you it's not mild, a scarf, hat and gloves is a must nevermind going coatless!

CallofDoodee · 16/01/2020 18:49

Where the hell are people who are saying they haven't needed to wear coats this winter? I'm in the South and have been wearing a proper coat for months!

doremimimi · 16/01/2020 18:49

Everyone in their lifetime remembers a really hot summer or the great blizzard of 1952/80 etc. The floods of 19whatever-year. The storms of whatever year and so on and so on. Stop being dramatic about climate change. That Greta has a lot to answer for with the hysteria she has stirred up in the common man!

SimonJT · 16/01/2020 18:52

The daffodils on our balcony are sprouting, I have only worn a coat maybe one or twice this autumn. The heating hasn’t come on a great deal either.

It is odd.

doremimimi · 16/01/2020 18:54

I think it was two years ago that we had the dreadful snow (not much sign of global warming then!). It was in February as I recall.

BarkandCheese · 16/01/2020 18:55

I don’t like it, it feels wrong. I’m in the south east so I wouldn’t expect snow or very cold weather, but we’d usually be having overnight frosts several times a week and chilly days. Instead it’s mild, wet and windy, more like October than January.

Divebar · 16/01/2020 18:55

That Greta has a lot to answer for

Yep no one had any concerns before she came along. What a ridiculous comment FGS. Why don’t you have a look at the stats.

Absolutely freezing in my part of the Northwest today.

billybagpuss · 16/01/2020 18:56

Its abnormally wrong, and even in Scotland where its colder, its not as cold as it should be.

In order for things to grow the temperature needs to be above 6 degrees, it has barely dropped below this at all, all winter, this means things don't get to 'rest' It also doesn't kill off diseases and bugs etc so they will increase over the year.

The UK vineyards are benefitting from it, Uk wine will be world renowned if this continues, but it doesn't alter the fact that it is getting worse and is just wrong.

I'm in the SW and haven't worn a coat all winter and have been regularly swimming outside.

Look at this. Any combination of these factors will produce different weather patterns. The planet is no warmer now than it was 10 years ago. If you wish to tell me it has warmed up by a tiny amount, ye, and it hasn't steadily increased. Stop alarming people. It's lunacy.

I'm concerned about plastic in the sea alright, but not about climate change. It's natural as our planet evolves and an infinitesimally small amount of that change is down to us!

megletthesecond · 16/01/2020 19:00

Yes. There's daisies everywhere in our town in Hampshire.
It's not good for wildlife.

billybagpuss · 16/01/2020 19:03

@divebar, its ok I think @doremimimi must be my dad, he doesn't believe in it either but he's getting old and has always been an idiot.

Yes we did have snow a couple of years ago @doremimi but it was nothing in comparison to what we had annually in the '70s and '80s, our village would regularly be cut off, multiple times a year sometimes for several days at a time, now if it's still there in the following morning its unusual and the catastrophic storms have become an annual occurrence rather than the rarity it once was.

Divebar · 16/01/2020 19:07

@billybagpuss

No disrespect Bagpuss but if it comes down to a competition between David Attenborough ( eg comments on climate crisis) and your dad I know who gets my vote.

billybagpuss · 16/01/2020 19:12

@divebar me too every time Grin

cheezy · 16/01/2020 19:15

I LOVE a good cold winter. There’s only been one morning of frost where I am. I suppose it is concerning. And sad too, that we may never have ‘proper’ winters again.

nancy75 · 16/01/2020 19:16

David Attenborough - a man whose carbon footprint I could never hope to match.

I work in a job where weather like frost & snow causes me lots of problems, the coldest weather is almost always in February. Don’t pack the big coat away just yet!

Leflic · 16/01/2020 19:17

Nothing we can do short term though. I’m totally not missing the car scraping, the tricky early morning starts with misted frosted windows.

I agree it will gone but later on. We had snow in May not that long ago.

I miss not having proper Indian summers where the sun shines. It’s mild but dull August onwards.

doremimimi · 16/01/2020 19:25

Did David Attenborough ever hear of the ice age? That we wouldn't had survived in that age? That it's thanks to global warming that we're even on the planet?

doremimimi · 16/01/2020 19:28

Scientists have recorded five significant ice ages throughout the Earth's history: the Huronian (2.4-2.1 billion years ago), Cryogenian (850-635 million years ago), Andean-Saharan (460-430 mya), Karoo (360-260 mya) and Quaternary (2.6 mya-present).

doremimimi · 16/01/2020 19:29

After each ice age - the earth had to warm up non? We're just in a warming up phase. Get over it and get on with it. Stop listening to David and Greta.

Grumbley · 16/01/2020 19:29

If feels about the same here, maybe a bit wetter than usual if anything.

billybagpuss · 16/01/2020 19:30

@doremimimi the rate of warming in the last 100 years has been unprecedented and has started accelerating. No one is denying that the climate is cyclic but it should not be warming this quickly.

doremimimi · 16/01/2020 19:31

Had man even discovered fire in the Huronian period? Certainly no CFC's around. Maybe a few dinosaurs emitting noxious farts. Nothing else I can think of really that might have melted the ice.
Mother nature is a lot more powerful than us mere insects.

Reginabambina · 16/01/2020 19:31

is it actually that mild? This seems the same as every year to me, it always gets colder in February.
