Does the mild weather this year bother you?

I was chatting to a friend today about the crapness of the wet weather we were having but how it's eerily mild for January. She said she's quite worried about climate change as a result. What are your thoughts?

OP posts:

And yes as OP's have said sometimes we'd get the odd snow in December but January is actually quite rare. All our worst snows dating back to when I was a child (now 40) was always mid - late March

oatmilk4breakfast · 17/01/2020 07:42

Yes it’s climate change. Yes I’m worried. London projected to have a climate more like Barcelona now by 2050.

Breathmiller · 17/01/2020 07:49

It snowed here last week (south of Scotland). Enough to close roads and be a pain to get to work bit it was pretty much gone by the end of the day except on the hills.
But a memory just came up on FB from 2 years ago of us having a proper snow day, sledging.
And I have a photo of a conpkete whiteout from about 5 years ago on the day British Summertime begins, which always makes me laugh.
I dont know if its actually true but I feel that the really cold spell comes later these days.
Although the snow of 9 years ago when I was pregnant was really bad. We just couldn't go anywhere. And that was from late November

I’m slightly freaked out by it - instinctively I keep thinking its early or mid March. We’ve got trees with significant leaf bud/ climbers full on growing/birds 5 or 6 weeks early in sorting out nest sites etc. I’m really fearful for birds especially if we have cold snap feb/March as so often as this mild period has been really unusual. London here.

TenPenceMix · 17/01/2020 07:53

Working outside in all weathers North East Scotland I can say it's bloody cold!

Frazzled2207 · 17/01/2020 09:22

South manchester- some occasional cold snaps aside there is no doubt that generally speaking the winter are getting milder.
Also the last few months have been much damper/wetter than usual.

Those who are saying it's part of earth's natural lifecycle are just WRONG but even if you were right, do you really not think it's something not to worry about? The situation in Australia? The fact that many low lying islands will basically be underwater soon (many already are)? the fact that food harvests across the world will be severely affected?

Jocasta2018 · 24/01/2020 05:42

I'm in the South East & have several bumblebees in my garden as a lot of the spring plants are blooming before we've even had winter!
Plus the birds are nesting - was watching a pair of grebes on my local lake starting to design their nests. No blue tits are eyeing up my nesting box yet but it's on a sheltered wall so very popular.

Its been like this for a few years - I'm usually in a warm fleece, only needing a coat if it's raining.
I'm worried it'll stay mild then we'll have a horrible cold snap/Beast from the East. Last year I found a couple of dead hedgehogs in my garden, literally frozen solid - they'd come out of hibernation early then couldn't cope with the cold.

Natsku · 24/01/2020 05:59

It concerns me a lot. I'm in Finland and this has been the warmest January in a hundred years. There's usually a fair bit of snow from early Jan onwards but instead its been rain and misery.

CatteStreet · 24/01/2020 06:21

Yes, it's unsettling. North-east of Germany here. It feels as if it was pretty much summer until October (notwithstanding one early cold snap) and it's been autumn ever since. I don't think we've had it below -3 or -4 at all and no time at all below zero in the day. Two years ago it was mild until January and we then had a very cold period throughout Feb and most of March, so rather hoping for something like that again to reset the balance (although the summer that followed that was an absolute killer).

SaskiaRembrandt · 24/01/2020 06:31

There are geraniums still flowering in my garden, which is not right. Traditionally, geraniums have to be taken indoors around the beginning of October due to the threat of frost, but we've only had one, very slight frost, and mine are still growing vigorously. This isn't the first winter that has happened, and it seems to be becoming the norm.

It is very worrying.

DownstairsMixUp · 24/01/2020 06:34

Where are you all?! It's fucking freezing here Envy

DownstairsMixUp · 24/01/2020 06:35

I'm on the Kent coast

FloraGreysteel · 24/01/2020 06:52

Yes. I hate hot humid summers and that's what we seem to be in for. Climate change worries me.

CroissantsAtDawn · 24/01/2020 07:00

-2 in Paris in the morning atm and 4-6 degrees in the afternoon. Colder than for my family in NW England

Dowser · 24/01/2020 07:04

I’m loving it. Not too much rain at all on north east coast, lovely sunny days.
We had 11 degrees the other day.
I keep thinking it’s April then look at at the date at the top of my iPad.
As I get older I find it increasingly difficult to cope with ice and snow..but this has been the best January ever.

LucaFritz · 24/01/2020 07:05

I think its been really warm where i am no rain or anything but it's hardly dropped below 7 even on a night and im boiling constantly! Thought we'd have had snow by now or some rain and fog

WheresMyChocolate · 24/01/2020 07:05

I'm in Sweden. We should be wading through waist deep snow by now but it's just wet and grey. Very unnerving.

Dowser · 24/01/2020 07:09

I’ve got snowdrops in the garden, tiny little daffodil shoots coming up an dprimulas and one plant has bloomed continuously since I put it in the garden about August
The heathers that went in in early autumn have an inch of new growth on them.
I’ve only worn my arctic parka three times so far..they were for days when I new I’d be outside a lot.
We had a big pane of glass replaced yesterday...I didn’t even notice it had been taken out..ie it didn’t freeze the room.

Dowser · 24/01/2020 07:12

Gosh, where do you all live in the uk with so much rain..we haven’t had much at all in the ne
We’ve had some of the best weather ever
Lovely sunny days, blue skies
Even Christmas felt weird with the weather

Somanysocks · 24/01/2020 07:21

So for all those worried what are you doing about it?

SaskiaRembrandt · 24/01/2020 07:51

So for all those worried what are you doing about it?

As much as an individual can. For example, I don't drive or fly. I buy second hand and/or local as much as possible. I buy refills rather than a product in new packaging. And so on. However, this idea that individuals in one country can solve the problem is bogus; it's a global problem that can only be dealt with at a global level. What I and others are doing is a drop in the ocean if world leaders are turning a blind eye, or insisting that there isn't a problem in the first place.

gingerchaos · 24/01/2020 08:07

I'm in Sweden. We should be wading through waist deep snow by now but it's just wet and grey. Very unnerving

Now that is worrying.

spiderlight · 24/01/2020 10:22

Yes, very worried. Also sick to death of the endless mud everywhere when walking the dog, and dreading the mahoosive spiders we're going to get because the cold hasn't killed them off. I loved the two clear frosty days we had earlier this week but now it's back to grey and muddy again.

Somanysocks · 24/01/2020 10:29

it's a global problem that can only be dealt with at a global level.

Which is why nothing will ever be done.

SaskiaRembrandt · 24/01/2020 12:20

Somanysocks, I agree Sad
