Question of the day for fitness instructors or anyone who goes to the gym or works at one

Just one of those things I've been wondering about recently.

You know how lots of people go to gyms in January, and then it all tails off within a month or two?

Can you tell in advance which people will keep it up long term, and which people will drop out? Or if you ever wonder about individual people, are you usually right or wrong?

Just wondering Grin

I reckon it’s the people with the shiniest new clothes! The ones who turn up in tattered workout gear have clearly put it through their paces and will most likely continue to do so Grin

I agree (ex instructor). The ones in shiny new matching stuff are either wearing stuff bought as xmas presents (in "good known brands" in the exercise world) or been to sports direct/ tesco etc and see till feb!!

people rocking out faded, tatty stuff mixed with the odd new top tend to be long standing.

I also look at sportsbra (or lack of when bouncing!). committees know a good sportsbra and wear it! non comittees are boobs all over the place...ouchee.

Great thread GrinI've wondered this myself!

The people who sign up for about 48 classes a week in January will be a flash in the pan - they go in too hard and it's unsustainable for most.

tectonicplates · 16/01/2020 17:44

Eek! What if I've signed up for 3 or 4 rather than 48?

All the gear and no idea Grin They usually tail off in mid February. Then they appear again in June for three weeks before they go on their summer holiday.

Also agree with sports bra/no sports bra (or a low impact sports bra when they're doing spin or on a running machine)

I went to quite a crowded class on Friday. It's still very busy at the moment.

I’m a personal trainer in my spare time, and have no idea by looking at people whether they will be long term. When I talk to people, the ones that enjoy it tend to be the ones who stay.

Find something you love there! If you have 3 - 4 classes you are bound to find something that will keep you going back.
