If you're 5ft 3/5ft 4 and weight less than 8 stone what do you eat in a day?

BringOnTheBotox · 15/01/2020 22:52

I'm 5'3" and around 8 stone 7 and I feel like I look quite chubby still. I have a small frame so I feel like I need to lose a stone or so.

What do you eat in a typical day if you are around my height but weigh less than 8 stone?

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 16/01/2020 07:08

5'3 and 8 stone is a normal weight, it isn't 'extremely skinny'

From the NHS website BMI calculator, it works out as 19.8 BMI. And they say for 5'3 a healthy weight is between 7st 6lb - 10st 1lb. So 8 stone is just average surely.

Im 5'5, usually 8 stone (currently 6 months pregnant). I have literally never dieted in my life. I eat what I would say is an average diet which is generally healthy but includes all food groups including 'unhealthy' ones. The only things I don't usually do is snack, but atm being pregnant am usually starving 24/7 so now snack most days.

I probably am 'moderate' activity levels. No fitness classes, but would walk an hour a day fast on average to and from places, and some kind of long hike or sport like cycling one day at the weekend.

I'm quarter of an inch under 5ft and weigh 9 1/2st. I wouldn't say I'm a standard dress size as it depends on the store, item and fit. Jumpers I'm a 10, tops 14, trousers 12. I used to be under 8st and ate everything that dared to come close but as the years have gone by weight has crept up and laziness set in. I'm 52 tomorrow and now look wobbly when I sit down.

inexcessive · 16/01/2020 08:13

Hi Op. i’m 5ft 4 and weigh between 7.8 and 7.11 depending mainly on the time of the month. I have weighed the same for over 20 years now with very little (conscious) effort. I m a bit torn by your post as i worry if you think you’re chubby. But on the other hand i have been this weight for so long that i think if i put on a stone i would feel chubby even though i would know logically that i’m not. I do think you need to think about what is a natural weight for you. I mean you are slim and if you would have to work hard to be much slimmer that seems problematic and unnecessary?

But in terms of what i eat - absolutely everything. In moderation. And if i eat more one day, i probably compensate on others, again without thinking too hard about it. I do Hiit and a bit of strength training, a bit erratically depending on work etc. When doing more exercise, i tend to sit at my higher weight, probably because i’m hungrier and eat more. I don’t think the leg think mentioned earlier is quite true. I do jillian michaels vids and they have made a big big difference to how toned i am.

'5'3 and 8 stone is a normal weight, it isn't 'extremely skinny'"

Right, it amazes me on these threads that people will call people who are at a normal BMI 'skinny'. I'd say those are about my mum's measurements give or take a few pounds and she looks totally normal. Yes, she's not fat on any level or chubby or anything, but she's certainly not skinny either.

And the people who say that if you're that size, you must eat nothing. I eat plenty. People have such a skewed idea of normal.

Baaaahhhhh · 16/01/2020 08:52

My DD is 5ft 3" and just over 8 stone. I am encouraging her to put weight on! She looks really thin, and her boobs have shrunk. She is a size 6/8. She looks very tired and drawn at that weight.

Isn't it interesting how we all view ourselves/others.

bakedbeanzontoast · 16/01/2020 11:35

OP photos aren't always flattering. Don't put all your self worth into a crappy photo. Really.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 16/01/2020 11:42

I'm 5ft 3in and weighed 8st13 after the christmas excesses. I prefer to be 8st. I have a bit of a belly and fat around my waist from having dc which I can hide with clothes.
Different methods work for different people but I'm currently doing a 30 day shred (but not everyday) and running. Also I prefer to skip meals rather than diet. However it depends on what works for you. Also try to avoid having treats in the house. Drink more water too.
Good luck.

minipie · 16/01/2020 13:04

If you are looking for weight loss tips what works for me is:

  • low carb. I skip breakfast, try to make lunch low carb and eat whatever for dinner. Any snacks I try to have nuts or cheese or veg.
  • a 15 hour fast in every 24. As above I generally skip breakfast so am not eating between 9pm - 12noon the next day. Seems to help.
  • buy dark chocolate only, the thin bars as then I only have a little at a time. Don’t buy things I know I hoover like biscuits or crisps.

But as I said in my previous post, please consider specific exercise to change your body shape (Pilates is fab if you get a good teacher who makes you do it correctly) rather than weight loss.

minipie · 16/01/2020 13:12

@separatedandseething

How to walk using your glutes rather than quads: Ok this is just how I’ve done it nothing official! but I find it helps to really focus on pushing down and through your heels when you walk. Do this until you feel your bum working. Notice how it feels and what muscles you use when you are walking uphill or up stairs (as you will be using your heels/glutes to do this), then do the same even when the ground is flat.

Your lower abs should in theory engage automatically when you use your glutes. Standing up straight when you walk also helps the tummy muscles and glutes engage (I used to walk kind of leaning forward, now I walk taller).

Doing Pilates really helped me with all this as it focuses a lot on the glutes and abs, but I think changing walking style could be done without doing Pilates, if you make an effort to be conscious of what muscles you’re using.

OP Do you have/did you have an eating disorder? You say you've been underweight your whole life? Why?

I am that height and was 9 stone most of my life. When I had a stressful job running a hotel I slipped to 8.75 and all my friends and family were really worried because I looked ill.

I eat a lot. Absolute tonnes. People are always shocked how much I can put away!

Oblomov20 · 16/01/2020 13:21

Oh sorry was that another poster? Someone said they had been 'underweight their whole life'. Am I getting confused as to which poster that was?

Bluntness100 · 16/01/2020 13:21

Op, can you post a pic of yourself with your head blanked out? And have you suffered from an eating disorder at some point?

Oblomov20 · 16/01/2020 14:01

Apologies. It wasn't OP.

"and have been drastically underweight my entire life. "

it was GeePipe.

Sorry, misquoted another poster.

Spinspinspin123 · 16/01/2020 14:23

I'm 5ft 3 and weight 8 stone 4. The last time I weighed myself I was over 9 stone. Been through some stress so although I knew I'd not been eating as much I was shocked by the weight loss. I don't think I look any different but my mum and DH have commented that I need to put weight on. I've been skipping lunch and not felt like the wine and chocolate I'd normally indulge in at weekends. The situation that caused me the stress is resolving so my appetite is coming back. I don't want to put it all back on but enough to keep mum quiet cos her nagging at me to eat more is driving me mad.

BadTigerKitty · 16/01/2020 14:36

Be aware that photos are sometimes displayed in a different format to the one they were taken in when they go on social media channels - depends on the source and destination of the file. It can mean people/things are sometimes stretched or squashed, either horizontally or vertically. It may be the case that the photo is unflattering because its displayed in the wrong format. Or simply that you were caught at just the wrong moment with particularly poor posture. Take another objective look at yourself before you do anything else Smile

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 16/01/2020 15:21

I'm 5"1/5"2 and 7.5 stone.

On weekdays I have a banana/croissant for breakfast, wrap/salad for lunch, then pasta/rice/noodle-based meal for dinner. Sometimes crisps/yogurt as a snack.

On weekends I have a porridge for brunch then nothing till dinner, or snack in between.

I'm pretty miserable and have quite a low appetite atm, otherwise I'd be closer to 8 stone.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 16/01/2020 15:22

Oh and I do 0 exercise, just sit at a desk all day!

Pinkbonbon · 16/01/2020 15:31

I'm 5'1 and I usually have to be close 8 stone to fully get rid of my belly. But only as that is where my fat tends to store.

I dropped 15lbs the year before last on the slimming world diet (always keep under 7syns per day). Lost 2-3lbs per week on average and got down to about 7stone 10 which I feel was a little too slim.

I think under 8stone at 5'4 might be a bit much... Just lose weight till your problem areas are gone.

But that diet worked for me.
Am actually just starting back on it this past week. Hopefully will be at 8 stone goal in 2-3 weeks.

trickyex · 16/01/2020 15:59

I probably shouldnt have clicked on this as I have struggled with anorexia.
I dont think its healthy to be so fixated on the numbers, at that weight you are obviously slim OP and there are more important things to worry about, and I say that in kindness as someone who has been really ill when underweight.

eminencegrise · 16/01/2020 16:02

These weights are mind-blowing. I'm 5ft, 4in and the lowest I ever weighed was about 56kg but usually 59. I was a competitive gymnast, though. Gees. Simon Biles is only 4ft, 8 or so and weighs about 52kgs, I guess according to this BMI thing she'd be considered overweight and on MN she would be told she was fat.

Caspianberg · 16/01/2020 16:11

Like I said 5'5, usually 50kg here. 6 months pregnant, now 58.5kg.
Doctor last week warned me I was at the top end for how much weight i should have put on so far as something like 5.5-9kg max at the stage in pregnancy. Xmas Hmm.
So they can't be assuming 50kg/8 stone is underweight surely.

CountFosco · 16/01/2020 16:31

@eminencegrise 5'4" and 56kg is the identical BMI (21) as the OP, right in the middle of the healthy range. There are a lot of people here right at the very bottom of the healthy range and a few underweight. And, FWIW, it's virtually impossible for a woman to have so much muscle mass that she has an 'overweight' BMI but low body fat. Only a few male weight lifters at international level are in that category. Much more common to have a 'healthy' BMI but do so little exercise your body fat is at a dangerously high level.

CountFosco · 16/01/2020 16:42

Like I said 5'5, usually 50kg

BMI of 18.5, underweight. Your current pregnant weight is a much healthier BMI of 21.4 and it's good that you've put on near the top of the 'acceptable' weight range. But since a Dr was monitoring your weight gain when you are pregnant I'd guess you are either abroad or you're under consultant led care because you are high risk so not entirely normal.

eminencegrise · 16/01/2020 16:49

BMI sounds like a really poor and outdated tool to me. I haven't weighed myself in years, though, I only used to before competitions. I go by how my clothes fit and muscle tone. I think scales are terrible for many people, mostly women. My DD competes in football to an increasingly high level and she and her team mates are all far more focused on health, performance and fitness than weight.

Caspianberg · 16/01/2020 17:10

@CountFosco - I'm abroad. Either way though, at 12 weeks at 50kg doctor here was happy with weight, no mention of any issues. Now at 6 months, 58.5kg, and he's checking I don't put on too much and highlighting its top end, not saying should stay this weight after.

I don't know, i'm not too bothered as seems fine to me. More for this thread saying that 8 stone at 5'4 isn't ' anorexic' or diet weight. For some of us its perfectly normal, and that is a BMI of 19.8 so not underweight at all on that scale.

My normal food daily would usually be something like:
breakfast: Porridge, or a boiled egg with 2 slices toast. Tea
lunch: cheese and ham toasty, or soup with bread, with fruit and yogurt
Dinner: spaghetti bolognese, roast dinner, stir fry, etc. bit of chocolate after
