Text or texted?

Would you say:
I texted him yesterday
Or
I text him yesterday

I use texted but have been told this is wrong (obviously not grammatically but in modern speak) and I often see people use text. I just can't bring myself to.

I think it's supposed to be texted but I hate it and always say text. It's sounds odd to me.

Text sounds odd to me! Grin

I use "texted" for past tense, "I texted Dan yesterday" and "text" for "I will text Sarah later" or "I'm just going to text Sarah now". If I'm in the actual process I'll say "I'm texting Sarah".
It just seems correct.

Past tense - I texted. Future tense - I will text.

Pipandmum · 14/01/2020 18:58

Texted. Never heard any one say 'I text him yesterday'. If text is being used as a verb then adding the 'ed' makes it past tense. Don't know why anyone would say it is wrong.

ExpletiveDelighted · 14/01/2020 19:00

Text sounds wrong to me, it should be texted.

I phoned her
I emailed her
I texted her

Doyoumind · 14/01/2020 19:00

I think it's the youth who use text. I am well beyond that category.

I say/write texted but always think it sounds wrong.. text sounds wrong too though Confused

Messaged him yesterday - much simpler Smile

Betelgeuse3 · 14/01/2020 19:03

I would use I text him yesterday.

Whyhaveidonethis · 14/01/2020 19:05

If I was writing it I'd say texted, however I pronounced it text. Text-Ed sounds wrong to me

VioletCharlotte · 14/01/2020 19:07

I think both sound a bit strange. I would say "I sent him a text".

skippy67 · 14/01/2020 19:08

Texted.

Apileofballyhoo · 14/01/2020 19:10

Back when I was young we laughed at the teens using 'text' as a verb. We smugly sent text messages. Even my DM texts people now. But I would definitely say 'texted' if it was past tense.

It only sounds funny because it's clunky. Same with bias and biased.
