Help with knitting!

I have just started learning to knit and wanted to make some mittens for my little boy.
I seem to keep getting something wrong though because I'm trying to do a row of knit stitch, a row of purl stich etc except it keeps coming out in like ribs if threes...
Am I just forgetting what row I've done previously and duplicate it or is there another reason this is happening?!

You are repeating the knit or purl rows rather than alternating them. I quite like the effect to be honest!

I think you're forgetting which row you are on. Try putting a marker on one of the needles, and when that's in your right hand, you're doing a knit row, and when it's in your left hand, you're doing a purl row.

Lovely colour!

Yeah, you're right, you're repeating rows.

The section that look like this ///\ is stocking stitch, alternate rows of knit and purl.

The section that looks like this ~~~~~~~ is garter stitch where you've done only knit rows or only purl rows.

You can put a paper clip in the right bottom corner to remind you to knit from that side until you get the hang of recognising stitches. Looks good though.

Thanks all for the tips! I'm more sleep deprived than I thought because this is my second attempt where I was really making an effort to remember what I'd done lol

When you are knitting one row knit, one row purl, when you are starting the row (knit) the casting on hanging thread will be on your left hand side. Purl row, it will be on the right hand side of your work.
Another way to tell when you're a few rows in- when you have the work ready to knit, needle in your left hand, if the stitches look like little v's that's a knit row, lumpy stitches are a purl row.
