Tutoring

Hello we live in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. My two children are in year 9 and starting their GCSE syllabus - they are of similar ability. They could use extra support in primarily maths, but it would be good to have a tutor with maths/science support and they also need support in French. I have had a look at the various tutoring sites, First Tutor, Tutor Doctor, Tutor Hunt etc and I am overwhelmed and not sure where to start, as there are so many tutors out there. I would be most grateful for any tips/recommendations - we spent a lot of our time in the Bishops Stortford/Saffron Walden areas so if a tutor couldn't come to us, we could travel to these locations. Has anyone had a good experience of any of the online tutor agencies, or any other recommendations? Thank you.

Online tutoring isn't as effective as one to one. I got my daughter a Maths tutor from First Tutors who came to my house, she was excellent. My main criteria was that I wanted someone who was or had been a teacher.

We used TutorHunt (DD2 is y10).

I don't personally think tutoring in Maths & Science & French is wise. I think you might be better off working out what is your priority. You are unlikely to find someone who knows the syllabus for Maths & Science so either you will end up with a non specialist (not ideal) or you will need 2 tutors.

You need to be clear in your mind what you are wanting. Is it trying to get passes, or are you trying to get a grade 3 into a grade 7 (unlikely), or 6s to 7s (more possible).

CGP revision guides and Seneca/Tassomai online for Science might help. The Secondary board here on MN is a mine of helpful information re GCSEs.
