Any anecdotal home remedies for a streaming cold?? Doesn't matter how bonkers!

I will try almost anything at the point. This is my third day in bed and my face has been behaving like I've been chopping really strong onions the entire time...eyes and nose and so sore from mopping them constantly. Haven't even had the energy to shower. Am drinking lots of fluid, taking otc painkillers and taken all my vitimins since all I have in is bread and plain pasta.

Anyone got any ideas I can try?? I just got up to make a coffee and have had to have a sit down on the kitchen floor. And I can only see out one eye 😂😭

Oh and if anyone was going to suggest eating a whole packet of Oreos I'm all over that already.

Can you have a really hot bath? All the hot steam will at least help with congestion!
Do you have Vaseline to soothe sore nose?

Put a cinnamon stick into a hot toddy of boiling water, honey, lemon it releases the volatile oil cinnamaldehyde, which not only has a tonic effect, but is also a gentle pain killer.

Also try Kaloba Cough & Cold Oral Drops and linden tea which is a diaphoretic.

I had one at Xmas and took some Piriton on advice of a friend (anti-histamine) - didn't cure cold but really helped with the streaming especially around the eyes.

AuntieMarys · 13/01/2020 11:50

Saltwater spray

Natsku · 13/01/2020 11:50

Go from a really hot steamy bath/shower into a very cold shower (I do it with a sauna but a bath or shower will have to do for people deprived of saunas). Doesn't cure anything of course but it clears up the snot for a decent while.

stripeypillowcase · 13/01/2020 11:52

a spoon of something really hot. (tabasco, mustard, curry paste)
makes your eyes water and your nose stream.

NormaJeantheHippo · 13/01/2020 11:53

Super strength vitamin c, zinc, and echinacia.

vampirethriller · 13/01/2020 12:25

Shot of cider vinegar, tbsp honey, in a mug and top up with hot water, always helps me.

makes your eyes water and your nose stream

Nooo that's already happening! Thanks for the tips. I do have some antihistamines so might give that a whirl, if anything it should help me sleep! Don't understand why I can only seem to keep one eye open!

My MIL boils up a horrible concoction of whole oranges, ginger and honey which seems to take my mind of symptoms long enough for them to pass. Personally I'm a Lemsip Max fan.

It sounds like you have reached peak cold so anything you try will probably seem to work as you'll start getting better anyway Grin

Wheresmycider · 13/01/2020 17:04

Tumeric in milk. Vile but was a sworn remedy of a colleague.
Only had the guts to try it once when o was pregnant and couldnt take anything otc.

Clove of raw garlic.

Peel, squash a bit then swallow down in one with a full glass of water chaser. You can feel the sinuses drying up.

Every morning, first thing until it's gone.

And breathe.

Namestranger · 13/01/2020 20:22

On a side note, has anyone else found their colds get worse as they get older? I vaguely remember a time when colds were just a minor inconvenience and certainly never had to go to bed for days! Nowadays I get at least three a year that completely put me on my arse.

Raw garlic. I swear by it. Chop a clove up into small pieces and swallow. It's a natural anti viral and antibiotic. Works everytime for me.

bringbananas · 13/01/2020 21:06

me too on day 3. I've just dragged myself out of bed to go and have apple cider vinegar in hot water. yuk. I hope it works. I don't have any garlic in the house :( nor do I have Oreos :((((

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/01/2020 21:19

Hot toddy.
Raw garlic.

Not in the same glass, ewww do you think I'm some kind of SAVAGE ? Grin

Gohackyourself · 13/01/2020 21:23

WrongKindOfFace · 13/01/2020 21:33

The hottest curry you can stand. Other spicy foods are permitted.

Natsku · 13/01/2020 21:42

FlibbertyGiblets

My bloke does it all in the same glass - raw garlic and ginger chopped up in the mug, rum or whiskey, lemon juice, and hot water. I don't know how he can bear to drink it but he swears by it.

Natsku · 13/01/2020 21:42

And honey

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/01/2020 21:43

Omg I am tipping my hat to him Natsku!

ScribblyGum · 13/01/2020 21:47

Vicks on the bottom of your feet then fluffy socks on the top.
Top tip from a lovely South African friend.
I believe it works 100% by placebo but I do it religiously now as it makes me laugh in my viral misery, and it makes my husband roll his eyes all over the place.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 13/01/2020 21:48

Lemon squash with added lemon juice, plenty of honey, made with hot (boiling) water.
Add a good glug of vodka (don't mix with painkillers??) Drink it while it's hot.
Vaseline or lipsyl for your nose.
