What's the one thing you'd like to see happening during your lifetime?

Following on from a chat with a friend the other day, we were discussing climate change, and war, and politics, and trying to solve the World problems over a coffee. During the conversation, we also acknowledged how privileged and fortunately we both were, two women born and living in countries where we had choices, freedom, food and clean water.

Late in the convo, we talked about one thing each that we would really like to see happen before we die.

For me, it would be finding life in another planet. Nothing would make me happier and more fulfilled than the news of a life form found outside of Earth, even if it is just a microbe. Complex life would be astounding and awe-inspiring beyond belief. Knowing we are not alone, and that the Universe may be teeming with life, would fill me with joy, and perhaps reduce a bit the despair I feel about humans destroying this planet.

What would you like to see happen within your lifetime?

Cure for the non-lifestyle-related cancers
(Of course, I'd like a cure for all cancers, but a cure for the ones that aren't contributed to by lifestyle is a more worthy cause to start with)

Are you serious? How the fuck would that work? A quick Google search shows that cancer risks are increased by UV exposure, smoking, eating processed or red meat, obesity and HPV, amongst others. Unless you are a super fit vegan virgin who doesn’t go outside without Factor 50 and who has never smoked or gone anywhere where you’ve been exposed to passive smoking, you’re on seriously dodgy ground here. Or is it just fat smokers who don’t deserve a cure?

Democracy and freedom in North Korea

I would like to know what happened to Ben Needham and Madeliene McCann

I'd like to see a cure for Parkinson's, or at least something to stop it progressing beyond the early stages.

There are lots of different types of cancer. Some have increased risk factors such as those you mention. Others (in fact nearly half) have no known cause and no known risk factors so nothing you do causes them and nothing you can do will reduce your risks of getting them.

Just thought of another one: I'd like to see the 4-day work week (maybe even 3?) become the norm.

A cross-party or Royal Commission on the NHS.

Peace in South Sudan.

Both are actually eminently achievable.

eminencegrise · 13/01/2020 19:22

Legalised assisted suicide.

danni0509 · 13/01/2020 19:23

Something invented (medication? What ever really. I won't be fussy!) that would help autistic children and the families. Doubt such a thing will ever happen but I can only wish.

I would like to know what happened to Madeline McCann. I watched a documentary on Netflix recently and it's got me wondering again.

WhatAMum01 · 13/01/2020 21:04

A cure for Autism that's available for every person regardless of postcode or wealth. .dont need anyone saying it cant be cured ,how does anyone know.that could be said for all diseases. To be able to enjoy my young son and too see him live his best life like every young child should.this would be equivalent to winning the lottery.

bigchris · 13/01/2020 21:07

I'll be shallow Wink

I'd love to see us win the world cup again ( football, mens ) Grin

The abolition of religion.
Britain re-joining the EU.
Derby County winning the Premier League.

OK, the last one is too ridiculous....

Echobelly · 13/01/2020 21:16

I think maybe a solution to climate change all things considered. It's going to cause so many problems - deaths of species the ecosystem needs, civil unrest, homelessness mass displacement, wars, the lot. So to me it is the #1 thing to solve.

catmg · 13/01/2020 21:31

A United Ireland.

And as a previous poster has said, for the body of Keith Bennett to be found. For some reason, amongst all the horrors and tragedies we all know about, Keith breaks my heart the most.

howdoesthisworkagain · 13/01/2020 21:34

Homelessness. Why is this still happening?

Early intervention in mental health.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/01/2020 21:41

4day working week
End of life process for those who wish to go
Cancer eradicated
Wealth distribution - no one on planet earth should be walking 4 hours a day to siphon drinking water from a dusty well.

Khione · 13/01/2020 21:42

Like others, euthanasia is the biggie for me.

Clearly world peace, proper equality, cure for cancer etc but, as a single, doable thing that would allow me to be peaceful in my later years (and I'm only 64 and currently fit and healthy) euthanasia is what is needed for me and my family (both my generation and our kids) to be at peace in our lives.
