What's the one thing you'd like to see happening during your lifetime?

Following on from a chat with a friend the other day, we were discussing climate change, and war, and politics, and trying to solve the World problems over a coffee. During the conversation, we also acknowledged how privileged and fortunately we both were, two women born and living in countries where we had choices, freedom, food and clean water.

Late in the convo, we talked about one thing each that we would really like to see happen before we die.

For me, it would be finding life in another planet. Nothing would make me happier and more fulfilled than the news of a life form found outside of Earth, even if it is just a microbe. Complex life would be astounding and awe-inspiring beyond belief. Knowing we are not alone, and that the Universe may be teeming with life, would fill me with joy, and perhaps reduce a bit the despair I feel about humans destroying this planet.

What would you like to see happen within your lifetime?

Cures for Cancer and many other diseases, clean water and decent toilets for everyone in third world countries, especially here in South Africa where more than one child has drowned in pit toilets, an end to FGM, free education for all underprivileged children , an end to hunting of rhinos, elephants, lions, and many other animals, the rights of women and children be upheld world wide, and an end to slavery , sexual or otherwise.

CoolCarrie · 13/01/2020 13:33

And the body of Keith Bennet to be found at last.

CharlotteMD · 13/01/2020 13:34

Nuclear Fusion Power
Cure for cancer
Free parking for NHS staff
Genuine "life" sentence for murders
The Routemaster bus back in production
The male pill contraceptive

Hellokittymania · 13/01/2020 13:35

I would like to see more equal treatment for people with special needs, that we can access employment more easily, housing more easily, things like this

BolloxtoGender · 13/01/2020 13:37

School children being taught Critical Thinking, Philosophy and Personal Finance Management, as some form of inoculation to brain washing and indoctrination.

End of the gender madness

End of sexual violence and pornography, corruption of men’s attitudes towards women.
Make porn socially unacceptable, it is hate speech (not free speech) inciting sexual violence especially to women.

Sustainable population growth.

I want to see my DD grow up, financially independent and happy. Married? Not sure. In my mind it is risky, I do not have faith that there are many good men out there.

RuffleCrow · 13/01/2020 13:37

The end of misogyny.

CharlotteMD · 13/01/2020 13:39

They find Madeleine McCann

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/01/2020 13:43

A lot of these are like Miss World saying she wants world peace, not really realistic things we can achieve in our lifetime.

So we probably won't cure cancer or dementia in that timeframe, but we might be further forward in finding treatments that aren't so horrendous on the body (cancer); or help sufferers live a more peaceful life (dementia), while we carry on researching for actual cures.

I'd like a concrete, cross-country plan in action to roll out clean drinking water services, starting with the most in need and rolling back. There are billionaire philanthropists who would get behind this (similar to Bill and Melinda Gates working to eradicate malaria).

I would also like to see the end of medical experiments on children; and the carcrash that is 'gender' thoroughly researched, debunked (with evidence) and rightly put in the bin. All children and young people affected to enact some kind of class action against the institutions that pushed it for their own validation and ends.

And I'd like back in the EU, but I think we need a new generation before that can even be an option.

ElfrideSwancourt · 13/01/2020 13:46

I agree with most of the above posts, and would love to see a violence-free United Ireland in my lifetime.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 13/01/2020 13:49

The extinction of ‘gender’ as a concept, through the realisation that the idea of being female or male is purely about biology, and any suggestion that it’s linked to personality or feelings is sexist, homophobic & old-fashioned.

AutumnRose1 · 13/01/2020 13:50

Most of the suggestions are very realistic in fairness.

Supersimkin2 · 13/01/2020 14:10

Far rents.

Euthanasia for dementia.

Leafyhouse · 13/01/2020 14:11

I'd love to see the Earth from space before I die. That would be amazing.

Number3or4 · 13/01/2020 14:49
  1. NHS being saved and with no post code lottery involvement
  2. Cure for all autoimmune illness
  3. New NHS bursaries covering jobs there isn’t enough staff and I mean proper bursaries covering tuition and living costs. Not these new ones, which are better than nothing but still not enough.
  4. Living wage replacing minimum wage
  5. Abolition of the need to prove you are poor before food banks can help you. They are giving out food not cash! Why is a referral honestly needed? It is policies that mandate this but it is pretty wrong.
  6. With housing, you won’t be rehoused if you missed rent payments. So if you messed up your benefits you are screwed in many local councils.
  7. The removal of benefit sanctions. I don’t think they are humane or fit for purpose. Find something else to punish these people with
HazelBite · 13/01/2020 15:43

I would like to see the class system in this country disappear, and the monarchy to go on the death of the Queen.

FramingDevice · 13/01/2020 16:38

Cure for the non-lifestyle-related cancers

(Of course, I'd like a cure for all cancers, but a cure for the ones that aren't contributed to by lifestyle is a more worthy cause to start with)

Yes, and it allows you to get your kicks from distinguishing between the 'deserving' and the 'undeserving ill'. Hmm

EnidButton · 13/01/2020 16:43

Real money spent on proper research into m.e/cfs and fibromyalgia. Leading to discovering what it actually is and a test made available. Even if it doesn't happen soon enough to help me, I really really hope it happens before I'm gone so I can see all the dismissive gps have to eat their words.

And whilst we're there, an end to misogyny within the medical world. Feel like that might take a while...

EnidButton · 13/01/2020 16:43

^and a treatment (or cure!) obviously.

colouringinpro · 13/01/2020 17:15

Strong, positive and effective action to halt climate change and start to repair the climate.

LtGreggs · 13/01/2020 17:21

My first thoughts on seeing the thread title were alien life and assisted dying. They both came up in the first few posts!

Actually that's very heartening to know that I'm not alone. I will continue to support campaigns for end of life legislation in the UK. And I will continue to keep fingers crossed for alien life, while dropping hints about astrophysics degrees to the DC.

RaininSummer · 13/01/2020 17:48

A kind of global federation where the world's resources and the needs of populations were managed better and where religion was obliterated if people couldn't stop fighting.

peanutbutterkid · 13/01/2020 17:58

Something like a virus that swept thru humanity and stopped them for doing deliberate violence to each other. Accidents would still happen, some deranged people wouldn't understand what they were doing, children would still have a learning curve. But deliberate violence would be like an enormous aversion. Just couldn't do it.

*deliberate violence covers sexual assault crime category, too.

Back in reality, I guess realistically I'd like to see a rennaissance for liberal democracies and eco-freakery. Good natured, constructive, innovative, with equity & social justice suffused throughout. I don't think this is completely impossible.

lostsoulsunited · 13/01/2020 18:01

Then they started hiring unqualified teachers on Cure for the non-lifestyle-related cancers*

I'd like to see a cure for lack of empathy and being too judgemental.

lostsoulsunited · 13/01/2020 18:02

What happened there ? Where did the teacher thing come from?

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 13/01/2020 18:07

Complete reversal of Brexit.
