What's the one thing you'd like to see happening during your lifetime?

Following on from a chat with a friend the other day, we were discussing climate change, and war, and politics, and trying to solve the World problems over a coffee. During the conversation, we also acknowledged how privileged and fortunately we both were, two women born and living in countries where we had choices, freedom, food and clean water.

Late in the convo, we talked about one thing each that we would really like to see happen before we die.

For me, it would be finding life in another planet. Nothing would make me happier and more fulfilled than the news of a life form found outside of Earth, even if it is just a microbe. Complex life would be astounding and awe-inspiring beyond belief. Knowing we are not alone, and that the Universe may be teeming with life, would fill me with joy, and perhaps reduce a bit the despair I feel about humans destroying this planet.

What would you like to see happen within your lifetime?

Betelgeuse going supernova. Hoping it's within my lifetime, will be a big show :)

I would like equal opportunity in education for all children regardless of there sen issues that we remember and nurture the children and forget about the satistics and decision shouldn't be made on money. Its time humanitarian view of sen and education was adopted.

Drama that link ....what a rabbit hole! I enjoyed that, thanks Smile

Horsemad · 13/01/2020 08:46

I would like euthanasia to be legalised. I just do not see why people need to endure a slow death when they aren't able to be treated and are in pain.

jenthelibrarian · 13/01/2020 08:49

The UK to return to the EU.
Equality of opportunity and of income.
A national maximum wage for corporate fat-cats, as well as a realistic living wage for those who do the work.
Churches to be taxed, private schools to pay proper local business rates and neither to have charitable status.
Peace and an end to ludicrous spending on arms and the military.

For Madeleine McCann to be found safe and well or even if the unthinkable has happened at the very least itd be some closure for her poor mum and Dad. It's got to be better than not knowing.

Noshowlomo · 13/01/2020 10:06

Concrete evidence of life on another planet. Or we put men on mars. I’d love it so much.

ssd · 13/01/2020 10:08

Abolishing the royal family and opening their castles and mansions for the homeless.

bellinisurge · 13/01/2020 10:18

Women and married priests in the Catholic Church. I'm a lapsed Catholic.
And bacterial life forms on Mars.

AfterSchoolWorry · 13/01/2020 10:57

I would like to see elimination of noisy petrol cars. Prevention of drone deliveries (imagine the noise and disruption to birds and environmental impact of the skies full of Amazon drones Angry)
Cures for Autism, cancer, dementia.

Elimination of frankenfood e.g. 'vegetable' oils etc

Ban on plastics, pushback from consumer to producers etc

AfterSchoolWorry · 13/01/2020 10:59

Oh and discovery of planet 9, out in the Keiper belt or oort cloud Grin

lostsoulsunited · 13/01/2020 11:07

Dementia and cancer being kicked to oblivion

FramingDevice · 13/01/2020 11:20

A reversal of the erosion of women's rights by legal prioritisation of men with 'feelings'. An end to the paygap. Lasting peace in NI, and no resumption of violence caused by the unimaginable stupidity of Brexit. A Brexit referendum rolled out to a properly-informed/less lied-to voting population, with the probable result that the UK stays in the EU. A credible Labour leadership and an end to Tory rule, in favour of a government genuinely committed to ending inequality and working towards combatting climate change. Trump impeached and replaced by -- actually, by virtually anyone. Peace in the ME.

The abolition of the monarchy. News footage of the royals being whirled around over the heads of doughty soldiers and hurled over the fence into St James' Park/Windsor Great Park/wherever, rather like when Harry Potter helps the Weasleys de-gnome their garden.

BlaueLagune · 13/01/2020 12:17

I would like a complete rethink on transport with massive investment in public transport and cycling, and a ban on SUVs.

Remaining in the EU - that ship has sailed, but remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union has not. However I don't hold out much hope.

Plus most things mentioned above.

And bans on individual use of fireworks and on garden bonfires.

PaprikaPringle · 13/01/2020 12:19

A world ban on vivisection.

SenecaFalls · 13/01/2020 12:23

A woman elected president of the United States.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/01/2020 13:09

My hope it a bit more modest, but maybe as unlikely. That people be kind to each other.

And maybe abolishing religion. And Manchester United.

So how is that being kind to people who find comfort in religion - or support Man U? Confused

It's a bit like when people say "I tolerate everything except intolerance" - they're instantly demonstrating that they're intolerant. Anybody can easily tolerate things they agree with.

BlueChampagne · 13/01/2020 13:16

Effective action on climate change with the results to prove it.

Mamimawr · 13/01/2020 13:18

Scottish and Welsh independence and Irosh reunification.

Candlecandle · 13/01/2020 13:21

Great question.

The world going vegan 🌱 (Feels great - 'The Game Changers' on Netflix is worth a look re. the Health benefits -(not animals) aspect).

A massive redistribution of wealth.

Most vulnerable people esp. children prioritised and protected.

AutumnRose1 · 13/01/2020 13:23

Interesting thread

mine won't be popular

I'd like to see a massive reduction in population with people understanding that more than one child per person is just fucking everything up

I'd like to see commercialism abating and the end of the mentality that buying stuff is a great idea

I'd like to see the trend go away for constantly travelling and spoiling areas of natural beauty with food kiosks etc

I'd like a post racial society

I'd like a more private society where wanting more privacy is a norm and doesn't make you a weirdo

I'd like a cultural change tending towards quiet, not constant noise.

I'd like to see the end of "gender".

AutumnRose1 · 13/01/2020 13:24

oh I should add because it's so important

right to end your own life in a clinical environment, with help if necessary.

Kazzyhoward · 13/01/2020 13:27

Cure for the non-lifestyle-related cancers.

(Of course, I'd like a cure for all cancers, but a cure for the ones that aren't contributed to by lifestyle is a more worthy cause to start with).

AutumnRose1 · 13/01/2020 13:29

kazzy from a research perspective there probably isn't much difference is there? I don't know...I mean at a cellular level?

Kazzyhoward · 13/01/2020 13:31

remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union has not. However I don't hold out much hope.

Don't see why not. If mutually agreeable terms can be agreed, it would benefit all parties. After all, it's the only thing we actually voted to join in the first place, i.e. the EEC - all the later closer integrations and political union happened by "scope-creep" without public agreement. I think going back to something like the original EEC we joined would be a really good compromise.
