What kind of house do you live in?

I love thinking about how different we all are and was wondering what your home are like.
I’ll start... I’m in a regional town on the coast in NSW. My house is two storey, 4 bedroom lounge, dining, kitchen all beds upstairs.
Built about 30 years ago so cosmetically dated but extremely comfortable. We rent because we missed the housing boom.

I live on an old estate on the edge of a lovely university town in the east of Scotland. Our house was built in 1997 but the style of it is in keeping with the other old houses on the estate.

It's a bit too big for us now as both DDs have grown up but it is in such a quiet and beautiful spot we are reluctant to downsize. It's also really handy when we have guests as we have plenty bedrooms, bathrooms and living space.

smemorata · 11/01/2020 09:52

I live in a 1960s second floor flat in a city in Italy. I actually really like it as it has big rooms and high ceilings. Would love a bigger balcony and a better view though as we look onto other blocks of flats and courtyards- can pretend I'm in Rear Window though. 😜

Youwotnow · 11/01/2020 09:54

A "three" bed terrace house, ex council. It's tiny and the third bedroom was created my splitting the second bedroom. It's ridiculous.

Front door leads straight into the lounge. Separate kitchen and dining rooms. Bathroom good size but downstairs. I am seriously considering a chamber pot, but think DP would leave me.

Singlenotsingle · 11/01/2020 09:58

3 bed dormer bungalow with full bathrooms upstairs and downstairs. Garage, garden and one bed annexe on the side with its own kitchen and shower room (which we rent out).

BiddyPop · 11/01/2020 10:01

1980s 3bed semi-d which we’ve extended out the back (large open plan kitchen/diner/living room) and into the attic (bedroom, but lost critical inches in box room for stairs so that’s now a study).

FenellaVelour · 11/01/2020 10:04

Three bedroom late Victorian terrace over three levels with large kitchen extension, sun room and roof terrace. Garden needs work but house in generally ok condition. Lots of storage space. No parking which is the only thing I don’t like about it.

Lipperfromchipper · 11/01/2020 10:06

Rural/coastal Ireland in a new build (we built it two years ago) on two acres. It’s a bungalow that looks like a cottage on the roadside but it has pretty much full length glass picture windows on the other. Hard to explain. It’s an L shape with one side being a large kitchen, dining and living area (with floor to ceiling windows and bifold doors) and a double sided stove that has the “snug” on the other side. A separate office/playroom/spare room in future. 3 bedrooms (2 en-suite) the master bedroom has a walk in wardrobe and floor to ceiling windows in that look out at a small valley. The laundry room is beside the main bathroom and bedrooms. (I love that I don’t have to drag laundry around!!) the laundry room is my favorite place as it leads out to the garden too so I can take the laundry out and in from there and the dc can use it as a boot room also. I will NEVER move again!!

A flat in North London, it’s in an old industrial building with original wooden floors, the original brickwork and ceiling supports are still in place. My flat had a door (to lower stuff?) so I have a balcony with views over London. It’s lovely.

We live in a 5 bed detached 1920s house just outside of Arundel, West Sussex, we've lived here for 18 years now and love being close to the South Downs.

JillGoodacre · 11/01/2020 10:12

I live in Kuwait. Live on the top floor of a 3 storey villa that has been converted into two apartments. The landlord and his family live on the bottom two floors. Massive living room and dining area. Nice kitchen but hardly any counter space. 2 bathrooms. 3 big bedrooms. Access to the roof where we can sit on an evening if we want but don't as noisy because of the a/c units.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 11/01/2020 10:13

4 bed detached cottage. Single storey, extensively extended and renovated. Original part is over 230 years old. Small windows, land, whitewashed, huge inglenook, burner, and on the side of the mountains.

Bluedogyellowcat · 11/01/2020 10:14

5 bed, 3 bathdetached in zone 4. Has everything we could want including open plan kitchen / lounge / dining plus 2 other reception rooms including a cosy tv room and utility room. The garden is small though which is the only drawback.

However it has great transport links, it’s a quiet road, local shops a minutes walk away. Don’t love the area as it’s a bit dull but it’s safe and the house has been renovated and decorated to exactly how we wanted it

BeyondMyWits · 11/01/2020 10:16

1970s 3 bed detached little box. 26ft by 20ft. Everything is rectangular, windows are huge. One toilet, upstairs, in the one bathroom. Outside is flat which is nice, no slopes to deal with.

MrsFruitcake · 11/01/2020 10:20

Three bedroom detached, open plan kitchen and dining room, double garage and drive, two bathrooms and downstairs loo which is the first time I've ever lived anywhere with a lav on the ground floor.

Built 18 months ago, small private estate. Love it, rented before this but after years of saving we bought this.

annonymousse · 11/01/2020 10:22

1970's build 3 bed semi in East Midlands. A bit soulless but comfy and mine and a lovely big garden.

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 11/01/2020 10:26

I live in a 3 bed detached cottage quite literally miles from anything, apart from a farm and a few neighbors around 1/2 mile away.

The original cottage is old very old I’m still trying to work out how old, I know the extension is around 12 years old I found the old planning application.

It has opens fires and original beams. It’s a beautiful house. If a little shabby at the moment, needs some tlc as it’s been heavily neglected but we are slowly getting on top of it

Before here we lived in a large 4 bed town house in a large town. We love where we live now before it was just a house but this is our home.

PhoneLock · 11/01/2020 10:30

Never thought I'd say this, but I often fantasise about a well insulated, centrally heated, modern house.

That is something I never fantasise about. However, I might start if gas is ever banned and we are forced to use electricity to heat the place. Shock

Ofitck · 11/01/2020 10:31

I'm in a brick 70s (but feels older) flat in Spain. They call them 'urbanisations' and are basically small blocks of flats with shared gardens and facilities. The bottom floor is duplex houses with private gardens and the third floor is long thin flats that go on top of two of the houses underneath. Mine is a top floor one but we also did an attic conversion so it's a duplex now.

On the main floor we have a kitchen, dining room, living room, two bathrooms, hallway, master bedroom and big kids bedroom. In the attic we have a large playroom? Guest double bedroom, smaller single bedroom, sewing room and tiny bathroom. There's a balcony but it's not big or private. Uk visitors find it really hard to get their bearings in our house!!!

Sussexbonfireviking · 11/01/2020 10:33

3 bedroom, 3 reception room, Sussex coast, used to be the village corner shop
Was converted 30+ years ago, but our rooms are massive

When we moved in, we bought a new superking size bed, and left the other bed in the corner for a while..... Shock

We moved from a teeny 2 bed in the outskirts of Hove

*this is my outing name

17CherryTreeLane · 11/01/2020 10:38

I'm in Scotland, in a house which looks straight onto a river & open fields. The house is quite fugly on the outside, but I love it. It's L-shaped, with bifold doors down the long side of the L, which open onto a big garden. Our garden is filled with solar fairy lights. We have 3 beds, lounge, kitchen diner, family room, large utility & boot room. I'm never moving.

Funnyface1 · 11/01/2020 10:38

A 3 bed detached house in West Yorkshire. It's perfect for us and I'm really grateful to have it. Bedrooms are big, good garden, garage and double driveway. It's the kind of house I never thought I'd have. It's about 20 years old.

Lipperfromchipper · 11/01/2020 10:38

@PhoneLock yes Irish building regs are changing dramatically at the moment. Every new build needs to create at least 20% of their own energy. We have photovoltaics and air to water heating system. Our house is pretty much airtight. Not passive though. Highly insulated.
They are now trying to stop oil and gas based heating systems.

ifeellikeanidiot · 11/01/2020 10:39

I live in a boarding school where my husband is a housemaster. We live in the boarding house itself. Its three years old, a new build. The building itself is really beautifully designed but obvs the internal fixtures and fittings are a bit bland. It's a 4 bed across three floors. Quite spacious. We have our own front door and it always feels really private once you're inside. 80 boarders live in the same building as us, along with four other families. Its also a day house and gets used for teaching during the working week. I have fridays off and it does feel really noisy when I'm at home then. No private garden, but the school site is huge and we have access to lots of outdoor space, woodland, playground, pool etc. Love it here.

Sofacat · 11/01/2020 10:40

1980’s 3 bed mid terrace in a nice cul de sac , largish kitchen , conservatory, reasonable sized garden. No downstairs loo which I would have liked to have but hey ho. I paid my mortgage off last year and consider myself very lucky.

Forestwitch · 11/01/2020 10:40

Semi detached, four bedroom rural house with fields at the front and back of the house. Built by prisoners in the early 60s, so not your 'conventional' house as each one is individual.

Private road, which isn't that good, as we have to repair it ourselves and most don't want to, so it's turning to shit.
No street lights, because again...no one wants to foot the bill.
But apart from that, we get to live deep in the countryside, surrounded by wildlife (get deer in the fields) and no strangers wandering around.
And every house is worth less than £250K. Bargain!
