Do you use a dishwasher?

We are just about to buy a new kitchen and trying to decide whether to get a dishwasher or not.
I've never had one before so do t know if I'd use it?
I've got a 1 year old so may be it will help free up
a few minutes every day?!

It saves me an hour a day.
It's saves water and thus is better for the environment
It gets dishes incredibly clean
It helps my kitchen look clean as I can hide all the dirty dishes in it until it's time to put it on
I use it to clean a lot of other things (oven racks, second hand Lego etc)

I'd rather be without my washing machine than my dishwasher! (I can take a load of washing to a neighbour or a laundrette...can't do that with a pile of dirty dishes!!)

TeddyBeans · 10/01/2020 22:28

@BonfireStarter unfortunately not 😭

frankincenseandmur · 10/01/2020 22:29

I don’t. But I’d love one

I love mine. Turn it on after dinner and sit watching telly then go and empty and put dishes away x

EnidButton · 11/01/2020 00:05

They're one of those things that you don't think you'll need until you get one and then you can't imagine not having one.

One of the things I especially like is being able to shove things in there as you go along so your kitchen surfaces and sinks never have used pots hanging around on/in them. Then when it's full you can put it on.

RJnomore1 · 11/01/2020 00:07

My dishwasher is only second in my affections to my tumble drier.

theoriginalmadambee · 11/01/2020 00:23

Enjoy OP
The times ours has broken down, its been replaced with the speed of lightning.

So YES YES we use ours all the time Smile.

FreakyPurple · 11/01/2020 00:23

I've got one of the Fisher & Paykel double dish drawer ones and I love it. I find the drawers much easier to stack and unpack and it's fabulous to have two drawers - we normally only use the top one day to day and have only used both when we have people over. A friend of mine also has one and they have little magnetic signs - dirty and clean - as they use both drawers and fill them up throughout the day, run when full and then switch to filling the other.

ipswichwitch · 11/01/2020 08:52

God I love mine. Been wanting one for ages and DH kept disagreeing with “we won’t use it” 🙄 and “it’ll be expensive to run” (based on his mother’s 20odd year old clapped out washer). We finally got one and it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. Goes on once a day, as opposed to umpteen times a day running the hot tap to wash up in the sink. Uses way less water than umpteen washing up bowls worth. I don't have to look at dirty plates cluttering the counter waiting to be washed. And it washes the dishes far better than DH or MIL - they’re firmly in the swirl it in tepid water a couple of times school of washing up.

toria658 · 11/01/2020 09:10

Dishwashers are awesome, they require minimal maintenance and just save so much faffing about. It is worth spending the extra to get a quiet, high efficiency model.

FluffytheGoldfish · 11/01/2020 09:26

We have a small kitchen with no obvious room for a dishwasher. I only have one large and one small base unit plus the sink unit. So I put it in the old pantry, drilled through the wall to plumb it into the bathroom sink!

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2020 09:29

The other great thing is all the dirty dishes are hidden during the day

Ours is very quiet and very good at cleaning (I’ve had one that was bad which was annoying)

avocadotofu · 11/01/2020 12:38

I can't imagine life without a dishwasher!!

MoonlightMistletoe · 11/01/2020 12:40

I have one but never use it !

Drinkciderfromalemon · 11/01/2020 13:37

Lone voice of dissent!! Had one in my old house, never used it. Didn't get one when I moved, dont miss it in the slightest.

newmumwithquestions · 11/01/2020 13:41

So I see you’re ordering one OP but to add to the voices of reason... yes yes yes.

We don’t have a proper kitchen but do have a dishwasher!

adaline · 11/01/2020 13:49

We don't have one but that's only because we don't have the space.

We're redoing our kitchen this year and a dishwasher is top of the list!

wowfudge · 11/01/2020 13:51

The people who say they have or had dishwashers but don't or didn't use them are weird. Why the hell wouldn't you? They use less water than washing up by hand. They wash at a higher temperature than you can by hand. They are more hygienic than washing up by hand. They get things really clean. They dry the dishes. They hide the dirty dishes. You train your family to put used stuff in the dishwasher, not in the sink or on the side and they help keep your kitchen tidy.

God I love dishwashers. Just need the equivalent machine for ironing, not that I do much of that.

Hellbentwellwent · 11/01/2020 13:52

My friend just had two put in!! She had one but wanted two so she could leave the clean dishes in one and fill the other one up with dirty dishes and never puts them away into cupboards anymore... personally I think that’s taking it a bit far but you’ll certainly never regret getting one

wowfudge · 11/01/2020 13:53

I've stayed in holiday homes with two dishwashers and for bigger groups it's definitely worthwhile.

PanamaPattie · 11/01/2020 13:59

We have two side by side. One for clean dishes and one for dirty. Saves all the hassle of unloading and needing storage space for everyday plates, glasses, cutlery etc.

SingingSands · 11/01/2020 14:00

Oh definitely get one!
And with modern dishwashers you don't have to wait until they are full to run them. I have a Bosch and it has lots of settings so you can run a half load or a quick wash.

user5656 · 11/01/2020 14:12

God, yes.
We were without one for a few years and I really missed it.
Whenever I start to moan about unloading it I remind myself what it was like without one.

midwest · 11/01/2020 14:33

I don't even rent a holiday cottage without one let alone my actual house.

LucaFritz · 11/01/2020 14:35

Yes would be lost without mine and they use so much less water and energy than filling up a sink. Just make sure you take good care of it though because if you slack on the cleaning and filling it with salt it will leave the dishes dirty and eventually breakdown
