You could always hire a small storage unit for things like Christmas decorations and seasonal clothes etc. It’s not ideal but better than being cluttered.

ClientListQueen · 09/01/2020 23:40

Hairdryer - in a storage box in the living room which doubles up as a side table
Hoover - spare room
Spare towels/bedding - stacked storage boxes
Coats - hallway hooks, wardrobe
Bags - I have an IKEA Kallax with boxes so in there
Shoes - shoe rack in spare room plus one in the bottom of the wardrobe

My spare room is a dressing/laundry/storage/mess!

Iggypoppie · 09/01/2020 23:42

An ottoman storage bed is handy storing certain things. What about wall hooks straighteners. A wall mounted Hoover too? Dyson do them but there are cheap imitations.

I'm also slightly addicted to YouTube videos on small space living.

TigerBreadAddict · 09/01/2020 23:43

I used to have small house
I kept:
Hairdryer/straighteners- on my chest of drawers
Hoover- nightmare, flitted between kitchen corner and landing
Christmas decs: loft
Spare towels/bedding: airing cupboard
Coats, handbags, : cupboard under stairs
shoes: porch and wardrobe

Iggypoppie · 09/01/2020 23:43

Over for hooks are great.

Iggypoppie · 09/01/2020 23:43

Over door hooks

SandAndSea · 09/01/2020 23:49

I do. I've had to declutter a lot. Everything has a place. Christmas decs go in the loft.

ringme · 09/01/2020 23:55

Storage beds hide plenty
I also use the attic
Shelves with storage boxes
Under the stairs
In the shed

ActualHornist · 10/01/2020 00:08

Hairdryer/straighteners - hairdryer plugged in always, straighteners in a drawer
Hoover - corner of the kitchen
Christmas decs - bought some soft boxes and keep them under the stairs. We get a real tree
Spare towels/bedding - don’t have many spare towels but bedding I have a cubby in my wardrobe. Two sets per bed
Coats, handbags, shoes - hooks, back of chair (I only use one, cleared out the rest), shoe rack

This makes me sound supremely organised and tidy. I am the opposite. I konmari’d the house a couple of years ago but it is full again - small three bed terrace with five of us living here.

We have an ottoman bed and lots of stuff just everywhere.

Squigean · 10/01/2020 00:08

Hairdryer/straighteners - top of chest of drawers or n one of the drawers
Hoover - behind door sitting room (I've great plans to get a PAX and keep it in there with ironing board etc)
Christmas decs - box in loft will only ever have as many decorations as fit in there.
Spare towels/bedding. - towels in airing cupboard and bedding in wardrobes of rooms they are for (two sets per bed max).
Coats, handbags, shoes. - all under the stairs

I suppose most important thing is not having more than you can store. You can't have (for example) 50 pairs of shoes, 30 towels or a 30ft frosty the snowman Xmas Smile unless you've got the storage.

Declutter regularly.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 10/01/2020 00:18

2 bed mid terrace, 1 reception room, cupboard under the stairs and built in wardrobe in bedrooms. Basically a modern 2up 2down with a bathroom.

Hairdryer/straighteners I have a hangy holder thing on the wall next to my mirror.
Hoover hanging from its charger unit in the understairs cupboard.
Christmas decs in a box in the top of the wardrobe.
Spare towels/bedding we replaced the bathroom sink and toilet with a built in vanity unit (still have the toilet and sink) with drawers/bottom of the wardrobe.
Coats, handbags, shoes. coats I have a rail in the understairs cupboard, handbags shelf in my sons wardrobe (someone had the foresight to put shelves in the back) , shoes under the bed, I've got one of those beds that lift open.

thaegumathteth · 10/01/2020 00:31

Hairdryer/straighteners - in dd's wardrobe for the hairdryer and in my drawers for straighteners
Hoover - under stairs cupboard
Christmas decs - we do have an attic luckily and it just fits these and halloween stuff
Spare towels/bedding. - don't have a lot. Bedding sets get kept under the bed of whoever they belong to. We don't really have that many spare towels so they're just piled up in bathroom to use and then washed and replaced
Coats, handbags, shoes. Coats on hooks in hall, shoes in a wicket basket and shoe rack thing underneath. Other shoes like dd's 3 million pairs are kept in bottom of wardrobes. Bags - don't have a lot: my handbag is usually just in the kitchen and school bags in their rooms:

KellyHall · 10/01/2020 00:36

I built shelves in the bottom of my wardrobe and next to the water tank in the airing cupboard.

We have high ceilings and picture rails so put planks across the hall picture rails for high up storage.

Ottoman sofabed, ottoman bed, blanket box coffee table.

My friend made a rack for hanging things like a colander above his sink. It's an old oven shelf, suspended by thin chains.

KilljoysDutch · 10/01/2020 00:40

We have something like this next to the front door for coats, bags, scarves etc.

If you can't go horizontal with storage go vertical. I've got poundland peg boards in my bedroom to hold crafting stuff 2 boards, 6 tubs and some hooks and pegs cost about £8 to set up.

In the bathroom for spare towels we have a rack above the bath/shower which you put rolled up towels into.

If you have a small house/lack of storage
mathanxiety · 10/01/2020 01:24

Hairdryer/straighteners - in the bathroom in a wire basket behind the pedastal sink pedastal.

Hoover - cupboard under the kitchen sink (it's a small canister style hoover). I have tension rods in the same cupboard where I hang squirty bottles of windolene, etc. Also a basket with cleaning cloths, sprays, and other stuff that can't be hung.

Christmas decs - in two boxes on the top shelf of a freestanding unit. I buy a fresh tree every year though.

Spare towels/bedding - in plastic boxes under beds. I don't have much spare bedding; I wash, dry it in the dryer, and put it back on beds. Spare towels are rolled up in a basket on top of the cistern.

Coats, handbags, shoes - underbed storage for shoes and handbags. I have large, flat plastic boxes with little wheels, which can be pulled out easily. Coats are hung on pegs near the back door. My front door opens to my living room (apartment, so not straight in off the street). In summer I wash winter outerwear and put it all in storage boxes under beds. I have a good few cardigans and a fleece for weather that isn't cold enough for a coat. These go in drawers.

AutumnRose1 · 10/01/2020 01:30

I live alone in a small flat with no room for storage almost!

No Xmas decs.

Everything furniture wise is storage so bed drawers, bedside table - which is where the hairdryer lives - the towels and bed linen live there.

Hoover - this a right pain, it’s always in the way of something but can’t be helped. Just stands there looking ugly!

Coats - several hooks in hallway

Shoes, mostly just in the wardrobe.

Nat6999 · 10/01/2020 02:06

I'm just looking at moving to a new build (I'm in social housing) & looking at the plans there aren't any storage areas for stuff like the hoover, ironing board etc or an airing cupboard for bedding & towels. I know bedding & towels can go in a drawer in a bedroom, but where the heck do you put the hoover & things? My only solution would be to put them in the downstairs toilet or behind the door to the attic bedroom stairs. Planners are making a massive fail by not including some storage, I would hate to be a family with a baby, where would the pram & all the other baby equipment go? The houses aren't massive to start with.

Happymummah · 10/01/2020 02:34

Hairdryer/straighteners- under my bed
Hoover- in the corner of the living room
Christmas decs- top of the bedroom cupboards
Spare towels/bedding- we don’t have spares really, but all we have is stored together in the hallway cupboard
Coats, handbags, shoes- all stores next to the front door, on racks, in a basket, box with lid.

polkadotpixie · 10/01/2020 02:37

Hairdryer/straighteners - on top of chest of drawers
Hoover - cupboard under stairs
Christmas decs - Attic (even though it's not boarded, they're light enough)
Spare towels/bedding - in ottoman bed (lifesaver for extra storage)
Coats, handbags, shoes - cupboard under stairs/back of wardrobe door/on floor of wardrobe respectively

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/01/2020 02:38

Yes I do, thank you for noticing.

And.....the floor.

LucaFritz · 10/01/2020 02:41

Hairdryer/straighteners in my bedside drawer
Hoover in the boiler cupboard along with shoes and coats hung up
Christmas decs in boxes under the bed oor on top of the wardrobe
Towels and bedding are kept on the shelf in my wardrobe
Trick is utilising unusual spaces also been good at jenga helps Grin
I'm pretty minimal anyway so i have maybe 2 pairs of shoes in the cupboard a couple spare towels and a spare set of bedding and i don't have any Christmas decs atm either

GoldfishGirl · 10/01/2020 03:01

Where do you keep: .
Hairdryer/straighteners
Hoover
Christmas decs
Spare towels/bedding.
Coats, handbags, shoes

Two containers (now white, used to be rattan) on chest of drawers for grooming stuff. Now keep hairdryer and straighteners in a drawer. Just got drawer dividers.

Fortunately have two hall cupboards. I have minimal Christmas decs. Spare towels and bedding live in one of the hall cupboards. Not ideal but prefer less furniture/clutter.

Just bought over door hangers for coats, bags etc., they were worth getting. Super cheap ones in Wilko.

One of the cupboards has a freezer (!) and above that is a rack for shoes, think I need a plastic bucket. I try and only have a few pairs 'out'- just bought an Ikea shoe tray.

GoldfishGirl · 10/01/2020 03:03

Oh forgot to mention under bed plastic boxes. Also vacuum packed bags - cant seem to find decent ones though that stay vacuumed!

prettycolours · 10/01/2020 03:10

Hairdryer/straighteners - have a stand up full length mirror in corner of our tiny bedroom and sit on the bed to do my hair, all hair stuff lives in a basket that slots under a small side table by the mirror.

Hoover - keep a little dust buster under the bed as bedroom is only room in flat with a carpet. The wooden floors just get swepped/mopped.

Xmas decs - carrier bag in cupboard under the sink. We are quite lucky that our kitchen area has loads of cupboards but they're basically our only storage so are crammed full of everything imaginable and I can never find something when I need it!

Towels/bedding - have a small shelf in our boiler cupboard. Some extra stuff gets shoved in the wardrobe which is already overcrowded with clothes and other bits.

Coats/bags hung up in the hall but it's getting difficult to get past them without being accosted by a fleece or furry hood. I need to convince DP to chuck some stuff we never use. Shoes on a small shoe rack in hall, others next to it on the floor.

I absolutely hate clutter but DP loves to hold onto everything in case we need it. I'd really love to have more clothes here but just don't have the room, I have to keep some at my mum's and swap out seasonally and depending on whether I've lost or gained a few pounds.

chocolateteapot20 · 10/01/2020 04:07

Over door hooks have been our saviour, we use them everywhere. Our local hardware store sells packs of 6 individual metal hooks which are just brilliant. Our kitchen is tiny so we have every type of vertical and corner and overdoor storage you can think of as well as shelves. Other good places to look have been Wilkos Studio Argos Wayfair and of course Ikea. They did a think vertical campaign a few years ago which had some brilliant ideas. I do think most new flats and houses seem to be designed by newly qualified 23 year old boys who don't have many possessions beyond a gaming computer, guitar and maybe a futon though. They certainly never seen to use their kitchens for anything like actual cooking...!!
