I was shopping today using the hand held self scanners. Finished, went to pay. Got picked for a random check. Have had these a couple of times before never been a problem. This time something came up as not scanned so yhe went through all my shopping. It was a big shop turns out about £7 of stuff hadn't scanned. He said one thing had been scanned then removed, which I know I didn't do. It was over a £100 shop, why would I not scan like £7 of stuff???? Anyway I paid and left. Now I'm worried. Is that it? Nothing like this has ever happened to me like this before. Will the police come knocking at the door? You read all these things about exclusion orders etc....I'm genuinely worried 😕😕😕

No happens all the time. Don't worry about it but be vigilant next time.

dementedpixie · 09/01/2020 20:30

They would have told you if they were taking it further

I had scanned the same bag of potatoes 3 times and then put what I thought were 3 identical bags of potatoes in my trolley. Evidently one of the bags was in fact different and had been put back in the wrong container thingy and I hadn't noticed. Needless to say I then got checked at the fill, they scanned that item and they then had to do a full bag check scan thing. I felt like a criminal and now get checked every time .....

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2020 20:38

Did they take your name and address?

MiniMum97 · 09/01/2020 20:41

I have had this. Sometimes the thingybob beeps but dies my scan it. Apparently. The fault of their technology imo.

When it first happened to me the man was really rude to me and awful and implied I was a thief so I told him
where to go and took the whole lot to a normal till to be scanned through.

For ages I refused to use them but do so occasionally now but am super careful to check the item has actually scanned each time.

Moonmelodies · 09/01/2020 20:48

Given that you hadn't taken anything out of the store without paying for it, there's no reason for the police to turn up.

Addie5 · 09/01/2020 20:56

No, but don't they have you're name and address from when you register to use the scanners? I realise I'm probably being super paranoid but I actually feel sick over this

Really, don't worry.
It was an accident. Accidents happen. Theft requires intent, and there was none. You paid up, that's the end of it.

Addie5 · 09/01/2020 21:21

I'm worried that it looks bad that a few items didn't scan, and that they said one was scanned then removed. I guess they might think one or two items is a mistake, more isnt. I go to this store at least weekly and now I really don't want to go back

dementedpixie · 09/01/2020 21:24

Stop worrying about it and be more careful next time.

CandaceStone · 09/01/2020 21:27

OP I really wouldn't worry about it, happens a lot! So long as you didn't make a holy show of yourself, the staff won't remember but you'll probably be randomly checked more often at the till.

Seen this in my local store where a lady hasn't scanned a box of eggs so the whole lot needed to be rescanned. She was almost in tears shouting at the staff, warning us all not to use it and then flounced off without her shopping. Then came back for her bag for lifes and swore never to return! Grin

Addie5 · 09/01/2020 21:42

No holy show, just pure embarrassment. I didn't know where to look 🙈🙈 thanks everyone 😊

All that will happen is that the computer system will put an 'alert' on you and you'll find you get re scanned more regularly from now on. After a few successful rescans it'll go back to normal.

CupoTeap · 10/01/2020 05:56

Go through the normal tills for a bit till you get over it. You will get more frequent rescans for a bit though.

ellix · 10/01/2020 06:05

Like @CupoTeap said just use the normal checkout for a few visits. I don't use the scanners for this exact reason.
