Has anyone had any recent experience of home insurance claims?

We were burgled recently :-(

The claim is going through our insurers at the moment, we are with Lloyds Home Insurance.

I am very worried because it says on the policy document that we have a working alarm. We are between alarm companies at the moment so the alarm wasn't on.

When dh checked the exclusions, it didn't mention the alarm, it just said obvious things like making sure doors are locked etc.

They're going to get out of paying the claim aren't they?

I worked in home insurance for many years. Have they asked you if the alarm was set? If they do don’t lie - they can send an engineer to check the log.

If they don’t ask, don’t mention it.

They haven’t asked as of yet but I’m worrying about the home visit.

A loss adjuster won’t necessarily check the alarm log, it would be the installing company that would do that as they have their own engineering codes that nobody else can be given - you can’t access the log without the engineering code.

I wouldn’t have thought it was a condition of your policy that the alarm is set every single night. At the time of taking out your policy you had a working alarm. If your doors and windows were locked and not left wide open I can’t see that there is a basis for declining your claim.
