Pregnancy after Blighted Ovum

Hey everyone!

I had a surgical miscarriage yesterday due to a blighted ovum. I would have been 9+1 weeks. This was a planned pregnancy so keen to start trying again. This was mine and my husbands first pregnancy and have tried to see the positives that there was no little life formed. However it’s still so heartbreaking that it just wasn’t our time.

I just wondered if any of you have experienced this and have gone on to have a healthy pregnancy straight after?

I have been told by all the nurses that you are most fertile after a miscarriage however I must wait until my next period before trying again. It’s still early days in my recovery and I know I may not get my period for another 4 weeks at least but I really do hope we can finally have a healthy and successful pregnancy straight away!

Thankyou xx

Please help a sister I had blighted ovum, it was 11 weeks I went for D&C on 27 February 2021. Please when can I start trying for pregnancy again, to get healthy pregnancy

I hadn’t heard the the term, but pretty sure a dd had one of these. Still testing positive and various signs at 8 weeks but the scan showed no heartbeat. She was devastated, especially since she’d already had one early ‘miss’.

However the next pregnancy (conceived not long afterwards) was successful and since then she’s had two more healthy babies.
I wish you all the very best, OP, 🤞💐.

Hi everyone, I had a blighted ovum in November 2020 we no one used that term but I have self diagnosed because I had a scan at 8 weeks and there was nothing but an empty gestational sac I also had no pregnancy symptoms at all, I miscarried naturally the day after my scan, it's been 6 months and we've just started trying to conceive again, 12 days until I can test but I'm sooo scared if it's positive and I'll go to a scan and see no baby 😔 it's nice reading success stories x

Hello Olivia,

I have a blighted ovum, followed by a chemical, and I’m now 6 weeks pregnant …. I’m petrified to go to my scan next week, how did everything turn out for you ? Xx

Sorry to hear about your sad news OP.
I also had blighted ovum/MMC - it was last year and I had surgical management at around 11 weeks. About 16 days post op I had what I felt were my usual ovulation pains. I did a cheapie ov stick and it was positive. I wasn't sure at time if that could be from residual hcg levels from the blighted ovum pregnancy but like you was keen to crack on so DH and I did.
3 weeks later (so 5 weeks post op roughly) I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. Went to EPU to check it wasn't retained product but they confirmed new pregnancy. That pregnancy is now the 7 month old lying next to me :)
My understanding is that you are very fertile post pregnancy - which is why HCPs are always so keen to get you onto contraception ASAP post delivery- and so I think if you are emotionally and physically well enough it is a great idea to just start trying straight away to catch the extra fertile zone! Best of luck conceiving your rainbow baby x

Ooops just realised this is a zombie thread!

Congrats on your pregnancy @tash - I know it is very hard to relax and feel positive when you are pregnant again after losses. I really hope everything goes well at your 6 week scan x

Hey!! I’m glad this thread is still going! So after my BO I fell the month after and I now have a little girl who will be 2 in November. Not going to lie the pregnancy was a little scary especially after what happened. But I ended up having lots of private scans which helped reassure me! Lots of support from friends and family helps too. We announced to our close family very early when I fell again to ensure we had support if anything were to have happened. I was also put on progesterone pessaries for the first 12 weeks which I had to use daily! So was monitored a little more closely as I explained my history to my midwives. Hope this helps!! Fingers crossed for you!

This is really helpful, I was also put on progesterone pessaries. So fingers crossed it works. I have my scan next week, and I’m so so scared that there won’t be a baby in there again! 😭 pregnancy after losses sucks so so much !😭

Glad I found this post, makes me feel like I'm not the only one! I had a BO in December, was meant to be 8 weeks but went for a private scan and said the sac was only 6 weeks and empty :/ honestly had never heard of a BO before. Was gutted that I couldn't have a successful pregnancy, made me feel like there was something wrong with me. 7 months later, I'm pregnant again. I'm currently 7 weeks but I'm absolutely petrified to go to a private scan again! I've just got it in my head that I'm gonna have another one x

I also had surgical management of a blighted ovum about 6 years ago. My period didn’t return for 8 weeks but after this I got pregnant straight away. He’s now five! I hope you do too.

Tashyb123 · 31/08/2022 07:17

You and me both gurl ! 😩😘

sunflower25049 · 01/09/2022 23:32

I’m so glad this thread has started picking up. I had a scan on 1st July was meant to be 8 weeks but showed a BO. I started to miscarry on 11th July naturally and by 27th July I had a negative HPT. I was keen to start trying straight away but had never used OPKs before so fist month didn’t catch but this month I’ve had my LH surge and now I’m in the TWW so fingers crossed for a BFP. I haven’t really thought much more past that stage yet…. Trying to take one step at a time…

Kashorch · 11/12/2023 08:51

Hi,this gives me so much hope. did you wait for your period before trying? If not how did you calculate the dates

RJJ90 · 11/12/2023 12:07

My period returned pretty much right after my surgery (surgical miscarriage) I’d say 4 - 6 weeks. I was tracking my ovulation and fell with my now 3 year old the month after! I had my surgery on 9th of Jan I found out I was pregnant on the 17th of march. The difficulty was I didn’t have exact dates of LMP to give to midwives so had to wait for dating scan for accurate dates but I had lots of private scans which helped from a dating perspective. Hope that helps x

I waited for one period to start ttc and got pregnant in September after my mc in July. Baba will be 6 months old this week! Xx

Hi, new here but using this forum to give me a little positivity after my experience.

I have recently found out I’m having a potential miscarriage they referred to it as a ‘ pregnancy of uncertain viability’ after going for a scan at 12 weeks due to bleeding and cramping. They found a sac but no baby, I’m due to go back next week for another scan on the date that should have been my dating scan but I have already accepted it’s a miscarriage due to how my body is reacting (loss of symptoms, bleeding and cramping). I have read online this is considered a ‘blighted ovum’ I want to miscarry naturally ideally due to my body already seeming to have started the process. I just wondered if anyone else had any experience of this and if so how long did you take to miscarry naturally?

This will be my second early miscarriage my first was end of last year I found out I was pregnant then a week later miscarried (5 weeks). I’m worried I won’t have a successful pregnancy after two reoccurring miscarriages. I just wanted some positive stories from people that have gone on to have successful pregnancies after two MMCs. Any positive stories would be lovely to hear!

Downandout01 · 27/03/2024 17:56

Sorry for your loss. It is a horrible experience. I had a MMC and my next pregnancy is now 2 years old and rampaging around downstairs. Ask for your thyroid levels to be checked as a colleague and also a cousin of mine (2 separate women) had recurrent MC and MMC due to undetected thyroid issues. Wishing you all the best for the future xx

I’m sick with worry over my early scan yesterday and seeking similar stories with positive/ negative outcomes.
My first pregnancy was a missed miscarriage- I had strong symptoms and then none at all and passed baby on my own (5 weeks).
My 2nd and 3rd pregnancies resulted in perfect babies but hard pregnancy’s (placenta previa).
Now on my 4th the sonographer told me the baby was high so unlikely to be placenta previa but that it only measured 6 weeks 2 days and 100% should be 8 weeks 1 day going by my ovulation stick and how soon I tested positive with the pregnancy. The heartbeat was strong (136 bpm) but I’ve had my third spotting/ bleed in 3 days and I’m preparing myself for a miscarriage and the thoughts of waiting for 8 days to know what’s happening is tearing me up. My next scan is next Friday.
Has this happened to anyone and what was the outcome? Would really appreciate negative and positive story sharing.
Thanks in advance.
