Celebs having babies via surrogates

Just concerns me a bit that’s all, i do believe you can love a child you adopt and I’m sure in one goes into this lightly

It just makes me worry for the women that are the surrogates

Just seems to be a fast growing trend

They get paid a hell of a lot to be surrogates.

If I was in a position to use a surrogate I would. Prenatal depression had me suicidal and i could never face being pregnant again. But hate that DD will be an only child.

LochJessMonster · 07/01/2020 21:37

It’s not their first choice, KK would have put her life in danger if she tried to have another baby herself.

And I’m sure the surrogates are very very strictly regulated and paid a handsome fee.

I don’t think they need your concern.

Most of the time it's biologically the celebs eggs or sperm. If I had bad pregnancies and could afford a surrogate then I'd definitely use one. Most of the time celebs were advised not to carry anymore children or they can't actually fall pregnant. Doesn't really matter how a child is brought into the world as long as they are loved and provided for.

sue51 · 07/01/2020 21:38

It’s illegal to make money from surrogacy in this country. I think you can only be paid for out of pocket expenses.

Quaffy · 07/01/2020 21:40

KK would have put her life in danger if she tried to have another baby herself

So she says. It may well be true but it isn’t necessarily. Besides, she already had 2 children.

Lardlizard · 07/01/2020 21:45

I thinking your worried about human exploration you have every right to be concerned about other human beings

Surrogacy is a violation of a woman’s human rights and leaves the surrogate open to all sorts of exploitation. Women are not chattel and it is horrifying that our bodies are bought with absolutely no thought for the child’s rights considered either. I recommend the book - surrogacy - a human rights violation by Renate Klein - it will make for very interesting reading to those of you who think surrogacy is harmless.

FruitcakeOfHate · 07/01/2020 21:49

Strictly regulated, my arse!

They buy someone's body to create a designer child (and the older female ones buy someone's genetic material, too, egg donation is not altruistic in the US, young women at universities are targeted to 'donate' as a way to pay their fees (they have to pay their uni fees upfront)). They also pay often to have more than one embryo implanted so the surrogate's at bigger risk of a twin pregnancy.

It's exploitive as all hell.

LucheroTena · 07/01/2020 21:49

You don’t hear about rich women being surrogates, do you? Exploitation of the poor by the wealthy.

Lardlizard · 07/01/2020 21:49

“Doesn't really matter how a child is brought into the world as long as they are loved and provided for.“ of course it matters, when other woman’s health, wellbeing and lives are at stake

OP posts:
chickedeee · 07/01/2020 21:50

I think it is a worrying trend but celebrities can 'buy' whatever they like and this includes gender selection. Think of the number of celebs with twins (one girl-one boy). Sad

LocalHobo · 07/01/2020 21:50

Sorry? Does this afflict ‘celebrities’ more than us mere mortals?

tobee · 07/01/2020 21:51

I find it hard to understand that some people's attitude seems to be "well, surrogates are paid a big fee, so it's all good!" As if tonne of cash = all problems solved.

MrsEvedder · 07/01/2020 21:51

Agree with you completely OP.
They can't risk their lives or health but it's ok to put a poorer women's life and health at risk.
Women's bodies should not be for rent.
Also a firm believer in the 4th trimester.

FruitcakeOfHate · 07/01/2020 21:52

Spot on! Or being paid to sell their eggs (not a risk free procedure, either).

MrsEvedder · 07/01/2020 21:53

Just seen all these replies written while I was typing, agree completely with above posters.

Waterdropsdown · 07/01/2020 21:54

@iheartniles totally agree

As for KK she clearly detested being pregnant and gaining weight. She also had complications. The rational of any normal person would be that I’m so glad I’ve got 2 healthy children so I’ll concentrate on them. She wants what she wants and will pay anything to get it. Sad.

Waterdropsdown · 07/01/2020 21:55

@FruitcakeOfHate
Yes yes selling their eggs as well. Sad.

BringOnTheBotox · 07/01/2020 21:56

It bothers me, too. It's as if they just buy a baby (or babies as it's usually twins).

mrsmuddlepies · 07/01/2020 21:59

Julie Powell ( from the film, Julie and Julia, had her eggs harvested twice by the same couple to pay for college fees. Years later she has struggled and not succeeded in getting pregnant. It must be hard knowing that there are her biological children growing up in a family and she will never meet them.

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/01/2020 21:59

Well precisely.

It’s bullshit. Renting a womb because you want to outsource the risk you’re too precious to take is revolting.

Couldn’t agree more.
