Middle age and alcohol tolerance

Inspired by another thread but didn't want to hijack. DH is 50 this year and I've really noticed a change in his tolerance of alcohol. It seems to obviously affect him much more quickly. Could this be an age thing? He hasn't lost weight and he's not particularly more tired than usual but he's definitely less tolerant (to alcohol) over the last year or two.

Yes and the hangovers are much much worse now too.
After a recent two (nearly three) day hangover, I've decided to give it a rest for a while.

Yep. Definitely an age thing and the hangovers get worse. I can see why lots of people give it up.

TreacherousPissFlap · 07/01/2020 16:30

This is definitely a thing, my hangovers linger for days if I overindulge. I'm furious as this seems another unfair side-effect of ageing

shinynewapple2020 · 07/01/2020 16:33

Definitely. I have to stay within the recommended units now or I feel quite rough the next day.

Sally99 · 07/01/2020 16:35

Yes there's definitely a decline in alcohol tolerance and feeling terrible the next day after a drop too much.

Alcohol also makes menopause symptoms worse in women.

It's not so much hangovers, it's that he seems to get drunk very quickly. I don't mean calling over/vomiting drunk but even after a couple of drinks I can hear it in his voice.
I think it must be his age. I've noticed it on menopausal women before (my mum etc) but never particularly noticed it in men.

Is he drinking less overall? But yes I’ve also found with age I get drunk quicker but I don’t know if that’s just because I don’t drink as much as when I was younger?!
I guess our livers aren’t as efficient at processing?

I know that since I hit my mid-40s in particular, I can't drink at all. I don't get drunk more easily. It's more like I sit down, have half a glass of wine, and before I'm even ready to go home, a hangover kicks in. I get a cracking headache in my sleep if I so much as drink a few sips of wine. It's crazy as if I've developed an allergy. DH is a GP and says this is incredibly common in middle age.
I've always been a lightweight/light drinker but in my late 40s, I've moved into practically non-drinking status.
I don't mind.

I'm the same. I could drink loads in my 20s but now 3 drinks is my total limit.
