what would you call this subject?

I'm really interested in studying how languages have evolved and how they link to other languages - is there a name for this subject if I want to learn more about it? I've tried Google and Open University but it's hard as I don't know what to call it!

What is the difference between linguistics and philology thrn? I thought linguistics was the nuts and bolts, and philology was more about the history and evolution, but this is clearly completely wrong

I did Linguistics. It’s very interesting. I think A-level English Language is like a very basic intro to linguistics (or at least it was). Could give you a bit of a flavour. There are many branches of Linguistics- I wonder if you might be able to do a module that’s most relevant to your interests.

Have a look at the OU .. its amazing and the website in phenomenal.. really helps you ease in to it. I am 56 and doing a DIpHE to start ..

Thanks, I had a look yesterday, I can't possibly afford the fees so will look into local colleges, etc and hope that I have the money to spare to do it properly one day...
