Has your teenage daughter got carpet in her room?

Having a dispute with DH about this!

DD is 13. We've agreed as her birthday present to redecorate her room. Her carpet is 3 years old and wrecked - she's a lovely kid but can be careless and the carpet has nail varnish and acrylic paint Confused on it which will never come out. It never looks clean even when freshly hoovered. She does try to be careful (and no longer paints up there!) but accidents do happen.

I don't want to pay out for new carpet that's just going to get grubby again. I'd rather she had laminate and a rug that can be cleaned. DH says nobody has hard floors in bedrooms.

Just wondered if he's right! What flooring do your teen girls have? I grew up with floorboards in my bedroom so don't see it as weird!

You can get really good laminate now. I used to have nasty cheap plasticky stuff but now it's high quality and most people think it's wood. Get really good underlay for noise reduction. Lots of wool rugs. Much easier and hygenic.

17 yo dds carpet was cream at one point.
She puts on her make up on the floor, it’s the eyebrow pomade stuff that I can’t get out Grin

I wouldn't be keen on laminate or wood for upstairs rooms, wouldn't it be really noisy?
I'd put cheap carpet over the existing carpet, save on underlay.

We used to have laminate everywhere in our old property. When we first moved in I thought it was going to be brilliant, absolutely loved the idea of being able to keep it really clean. However, the pro of that was soon outweighed by the cons - it’s cold, REALLY noisy when perfectly normal things happen (dropping phones/toys etc.) and shows even the slightest speck of dirt. I’d still notice bits on the floor even when giving it a good hoover everyday, it drove me mad.

Go for vinyl / lino and a rug .

CallarMorvern · 05/01/2020 20:28

Apparently she has carpet, though we don't see it very often as her room is a pit 🙄
We have an old house, with rubbish heating, her previous bedroom had white painted boards and rugs, but it was freezing. We now just put down the cheapest carpet (roll end/discounted etc) and accept that it will get wrecked, she is always painting/crafting or spilling stuff. I'm not prepared to worry about it

The laminate we have on the landing has insulation on it and it’s not noisy.

The stuff dh had with ex was very plastic-y underfoot but he said it was expensive.

MrsPerfect12 · 05/01/2020 20:31

My daughter has white laminate. Her room is cold as a result but defo better with a make up obsessed teen. I don't find it noises but she isn't banging about up there. Amtico or karendean could be an option.

Passthecake30 · 05/01/2020 20:33

Dd and ds (10&11) have laminate, we got it laid when they were 1&2, it looks good as new. Easy to clean, I just crawl over it with a wet cloth, catching the dust bunnies in the corner.

InsertFunnyUsername · 05/01/2020 20:37

We dont have carpet anywhere. It's less hassle and rarely gets damaged. I dont find it that cold or maybe I am used to it, plus it warms up quite quickly. I couldn't wait to rip up the carpet.

hm246 · 05/01/2020 20:42

I had laminate floors at my mums house

ManiacalLapwing · 05/01/2020 20:46

My parents had some large mats made out of the new carpet when they had it replaced, for some high traffic areas and for in front of my DSis large bedroom mirror where she applied her makeup Grin.

Carpet tiles would be a good compromise as you could replace just the square if accidents happen. We have laminate in our bedrooms and it's fine but I can see how carpet would help to soundproof.

MrsPnut · 05/01/2020 21:09

We had commercial grade laminate put down, we managed to get just enough packs in the clearance section.

It was done 11 years ago when dd1 was 12 and it survived her and now her sister. It looks like new and make up just wipes off.

I save my living room carpet from stains by having a big rug on it.
