Has your teenage daughter got carpet in her room?

Having a dispute with DH about this!

DD is 13. We've agreed as her birthday present to redecorate her room. Her carpet is 3 years old and wrecked - she's a lovely kid but can be careless and the carpet has nail varnish and acrylic paint Confused on it which will never come out. It never looks clean even when freshly hoovered. She does try to be careful (and no longer paints up there!) but accidents do happen.

I don't want to pay out for new carpet that's just going to get grubby again. I'd rather she had laminate and a rug that can be cleaned. DH says nobody has hard floors in bedrooms.

Just wondered if he's right! What flooring do your teen girls have? I grew up with floorboards in my bedroom so don't see it as weird!

Vinyl flooring is warm, soft and easy to clean. Loads of designs and great in bedrooms.

Cornishmendoitdrekkly · 05/01/2020 14:14

Laminate in daughter's room. Easy to mop up spills and keep clean under the bed. Carpet in son's room which helps cover the noise when he is playing on his computer.

What would she like? We found that allowing her design freedom has encouraged her to keep her room clean and tidy.

There's pros and cons.

I had floorboards and laminate in my previous house and mostly hated it. Constant bits and fluff and scratches. FREEZING in winter but lovely in summer. Easy to clean spillages.

In my new house there is (I kid you not) a carpeted kitchen. This house is very quirky Grin carpets through out apart from the bathroom thankfully! I do feel like they are constantly filthy and stained.

I feel the same about the furniture and beds too though. I'm constantly washing the sofa/chair throws and bedding. But at least you can cover them up!

When I get my own place I'll have hardfloors and big rugs.

My parents are hiring a carpet cleaner soon and I'm borrowing it Grin

Wood floors everywhere, with rugs. Never understood the weird British obsession with carpets! Wood is easier to clean and more hygienic. And you can change up the rugs to redecorate, without needing to rip up a carpet.

OrangeSlice · 05/01/2020 14:15

We've got wood floor downstairs with a rug and carpet on the stairs and upstairs apart from the bathroom. The dds (13 and 15) don't seem to spill stuff on it

greenlynx · 05/01/2020 14:16

We needed to move quickly from rental so put carpet in both bedrooms but we are planning to get rid of it and put laminate in the future. I think you could choose nice laminate and make it warm by putting good insulation. It’s what we did in our living room and it’s lovely.
I feel your pain. DD has got thick expensive wool carpet: the floor in her bedroom’s quite cold so thick carpet was necessity rather than luxury. After one month she had stains from sun cream. But who I am to criticise? My carpet got make up stains after 2 weeks.

OrangeSlice · 05/01/2020 14:17

As the wood flooring downstairs is the original floor boards it's draughty, so carpet works better upstairs. Probably ok if it's not the original floorboards though

Trewser · 05/01/2020 14:18

I would replace our teens carpet with a rug and wood or laminate in a heartbeat.

Thefaceofboe · 05/01/2020 14:19

I had a cream carpet as a teen (more fool my parents!!) and when I moved out we all had a laugh at how dirty the carpet was. I’d recommend laminate and a rug which can be replaced at a lot lower cost.

I have a cream carpet in my bedroom now at 25 and I think I regret it

OceanSunFish · 05/01/2020 14:20

My teens have carpet.

Tanyaaah · 05/01/2020 14:22

Why don't you just leave the existing carpet until she is old enough to not ruin a new one?

grafittiartist · 05/01/2020 14:24

Vinyl for mine. V cheap and cheerful, but she loved it!
It made a very hot sunny room nice and cool too.

overnightangel · 05/01/2020 14:24

“Laminate looks cheap and nasty”
ConfusedBiscuit

“In an old house I had the moth eaten carpet taken up and the floor boards painted white, it looked nice with a thick rug. Cheaper than laminating and can be recarpeted at a later date.”

This sounds ideal 👍🏻

FacesLookUgly · 05/01/2020 14:27

There are pros/cons to each option.

What does she prefer?

Trewser · 05/01/2020 14:27

Yes painted floorboards and a huge colourful or berber style rug. Very cool too.

Hoppinggreen · 05/01/2020 14:27

Mine has vinyl planks, same as in all the bedrooms, she chose the colour
We took out her carpet (which was minging) and replaced it with laminate due to her asthma years ago but we changed the whole of upstairs

BackforGood · 05/01/2020 14:28

Carpet for all my teens.
Laminate is slippery - dd2 falls over often enough as it is!

Thedeadwood · 05/01/2020 14:32

Why on earth would you bother replacing a carpet for a 13 year old who has already messed up one in 3 years?!

PassMeAnotherCoffee · 05/01/2020 14:36

We have wooden floors everywhere. We don't find them cold or noisy.
Kids have rugs by their beds.
Easy to keep clean.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/01/2020 14:38

Carpets upstairs. Wouldn’t have anything else.

Wood floors downstairs.

Sharkyfan · 05/01/2020 14:38

Even bleachable polypropylene carpets are no match for nail varnish

If you had to go for carpet then maybe a dark colour like charcoal grey.

Or couldn’t you just refresh her current carrot by putting a nice rug on top?

damnthatanxiety · 05/01/2020 14:39

goatbame
Carpet is seen as very common and nasty where I live.
Where on earth do you live?

Inherdefence · 05/01/2020 14:40

In our last house the kids rooms had carpet tiles. When one was damaged you could lift it and scrub it under the tap. If it didn’t come clean we’d swop it for one from under the bed.

In this house the fitted carpets were laid when we moved in and yes, they are now totally wrecked. Now they are old enough to be bothered by it they have spent their own money on rugs that hide the worst of the damage.

IHeartKingThistle · 05/01/2020 14:43

Ooh, mixed opinions so far! She doesn't want laminate as she doesn't like rugs.

I think if we can't reach an agreement on an easy-clean floor then she'll probably end up keeping the tatty carpet - if I pay for a new one and it gets ruined I will lose my mind!

DD is nearly 20 and has had laminate in her room since she was about 13. It still looks good and has survived make up spillages and more recently spilt drinks and worse Shock
