Has your teenage daughter got carpet in her room?

Having a dispute with DH about this!

DD is 13. We've agreed as her birthday present to redecorate her room. Her carpet is 3 years old and wrecked - she's a lovely kid but can be careless and the carpet has nail varnish and acrylic paint Confused on it which will never come out. It never looks clean even when freshly hoovered. She does try to be careful (and no longer paints up there!) but accidents do happen.

I don't want to pay out for new carpet that's just going to get grubby again. I'd rather she had laminate and a rug that can be cleaned. DH says nobody has hard floors in bedrooms.

Just wondered if he's right! What flooring do your teen girls have? I grew up with floorboards in my bedroom so don't see it as weird!

We have wood floors in all the bedroons. I would hate carpet.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/01/2020 15:42

Carpets upstairs here. We don't have 'real' floorboards underneath, a lot of houses built in the last 30 or so years have MDF floorboards so couldn't just sand the floorboards as several have suggested. We have (naice) laminate downstairs but it's cold and I don't like it for that reason.

Black carpet in DD's room. She's 16 now and she's had it since we moved in around 18 months ago. It still looks new, however, she is very clean and tidy and hoovers her own room three times a week and does all her makeup, nail painting etc at her dresser.

My 18 year old has moved out now, but trashed her carpets when she lived at home, with make up, nail varnish, oil paints, and food and drink spillages. We couldn’t put laminate down as she is so noisy, we knew it would be a disaster, so we bought cheap carpet sold as an end of roll, from a local carpet shop for about £40 and my husband fitted it himself. Her room is 13x10 ft so not tiny, but there was lots of choice. We had to do this a couple of times, but at least it wasn't expensive. Husband had no carpet fitting experience, but said its easy as long as you have a sharp knife. The gripper rods and underlay can just be reused from last time.

Funnily enough shes really careful about her carpet now her flat deposit depends on it being left perfect.

Hard floors all through the house, with Persian rugs, carpet only on stairs - reluctantly as we thought bare stairs would be too noisy. I think carpet is vile and unhygienic anywhere!

Notthebloodygym · 05/01/2020 16:19

Hard wood and a rug or very cheap carpet. My DD has ruined 2 carpets.

JMoore · 05/01/2020 16:43

We don't have a single scrap of carpet in our house. Hate the stuff, and I don't want to think of what it would do to DH's allergies. We have tiles downstairs and laminate upstairs. DD14 wants a rug in her room when we get her some new furniture, but it has to be small and washable.

skatesbythesea · 05/01/2020 19:07

Deep cleaning is quite effective, you can hire one in B&Q for 24 hours for £22.

Not sure it will get nail varnish out. Carpets do need a deep clean now and then.

Deadposhtory · 05/01/2020 19:09

Just about to remove my kids carpet and put down something easier.

Dieu · 05/01/2020 19:14

Wooden flooring in mine. Having found a dead mouse in her bin recently, I can confirm that not even a rodent can survive in her room!

EnglishRain · 05/01/2020 19:19

No DC (yet) but we have wooden floorboards. I don't find them cold. The spare room we will use as the nursery has carpet, I gather the floorboards aren't great underneath. We will rip that out and either get something non-carpet laid (probably Amtico or similar) or perhaps paint the boards if they're good enough for that.

I also feel like carpet is never really clean, and we have dogs too. Much prefer solid floors.

speakout · 05/01/2020 19:22

My DD has a white carpet.

Say no more.

Dasbouncemachine · 05/01/2020 19:25

Definitely go laminate I had it when I was a teen, my sister had carpet and burned big "V" marks in the carpet from her straighteners! Make up etc stained all over it. You can put carpet in later but to save your sanity I'd definitely go laminate

Whynosnowyet · 05/01/2020 19:27

Can't remember.
So long since I have seen the floor.

ruralcat · 05/01/2020 19:27

I'm with your DH. A carpet that can be bleached will be good for a teen.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/01/2020 19:30

Our house is wood floors throughout.

Not a carpet in sight and it is soo freeing-much easier to look after and much healthier for DD's allergies.

I would never go back to carpets!!

raspberrymolakoff · 05/01/2020 19:33

Due to dust allergies we have never had fitted carpets except on some stairs. We recently bought a new rug which can be put in the washing machine. It's made from recycled bottles but looks great! We got it from this place: www.weavergreen.com
We also have a rug we bought many years ago in a Mediterranean market for about £10 which washes fabulously in the machine too.

ScorpionQueen · 05/01/2020 19:35

Can't remember.
So long since I have seen the floor.

You beat me to it. Grin

Comefromaway · 05/01/2020 19:37

She has a lovely carpet that’s been ruined with mascara stains and hairdryer burns.

loopyloo12 · 05/01/2020 19:42

We replaced my daughters carpet with solid wood so much easier and cleaner and looks lovely

Spied · 05/01/2020 19:42

Pale grey carpet in dd's room has the odd smashed eyeshadow palette stain and a blob of slime. It will be replaced with laminate and a rug next.

TWD89 · 05/01/2020 19:48

DD14 has carpet.

It’s covered in nail polish and other assorted shit.

I’ll replace it when she moves out!

BrigitsBigKnickers · 05/01/2020 19:52

Both of my DDs have laminate with a rug in their rooms.

newbingepisodes · 05/01/2020 19:52

My entire house is laminate, all 5 bedrooms, hall, lounge, dining room, playroom, kitchen. I only have carpet on the stairs and landing because it was too difficult to source decent wood veneer for stairs.
Both kids have wooden floor in bedrooms. So do I.
Easy to clean!

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 05/01/2020 19:59

My 2 girls have wooden flooring, it's a pine one from homebase which was cheaper than laminate. This was after their carpets getting trashed from going in soaking wet after baths and ruining them. They have rugs and they are not cold and are a lot easier to clean and as it is a nice light pine, reflects the light too and makes the room look a lot more pleasant.
