moved house at the beginning of December, between that and Christmas etc have only received the forms to change my address and name to married surname in the post, whilst filling this out it dawned on me that I my road tax must be due so done a check and it ran out on 1st jan!

Queue mad panic to find V5 as with moving obviously hadn’t got the letter to remind me to renew so didn’t have the reference number but all sorted and now taxed but am now bricking it as drove my car for work the other day not even realising! Has anyone else done this? Now that I have renewed online am I covered?

Ive not done this but now that it's taxed it should be OK. I'd imagine it's been taxed from the expiry date rather than from today. I wouldn't think that they would pursue you as there was no intention to avoid payment.

WarmSausageTea · 04/01/2020 21:47

I inadvertently did the same thing with my road tax and it was a worry for a couple of weeks after I renewed, but nothing happened. I think the odds are that you’ll be okay.

I’ll be better organised this year.

FaithInfinity · 04/01/2020 22:05

Yes I did this..twice! 🤦🏻 I just paid as soon as I remembered and it was okay. However you can now pay by direct debit so I do mine monthly so I never forget!

I've done this in the past OP and if you paid for it today I'll backdate to beginning of Jan. Smile

I’ve done this before and nothing happened, I think the DVLA have to actually catch you driving on public roads without valid tax before they could actually do anything so I wouldn’t worry.

SuperMeerkat · 05/01/2020 10:07

We did this for 2 months inadvertently so i’m sure you’ll be fine.

Namethecat · 05/01/2020 10:09

I was mortified just before Christmas to realise I had been driving my car for 3 months without an MOT .

Scrumptiousbears · 05/01/2020 11:05

DVLA trawl roads where I live and regularly clump cars and stock big stickers on with window saying unpaid car tax. If it's not paid in a day or two they tow the car away.

I think you've gotten away with it.

lisag1969 · 05/01/2020 11:10

You can pay your car tax by direct debit now. So if you set that up. You will not have to worry about forgetting. X

lisag1969 · 05/01/2020 11:14

@namethecat.
You can set up a reminder for your Mot and it will notify you on your mobile for a period before it's due.
You can also pay tax by direct debit incase you forget. X
