Expensive item found - what would you do?

Several years ago we found a ring in our spare bedroom.

We asked those who stayed there recently and no one claimed it.
We'd been living in the house for something like 5-7 years at this point and I would be 99% sure it couldn't have been left by the previous owners as room had been completely empty when we moved in.

We assumed the ring belonged to some teenage friend of our DS but no one said claimed it. We put it on a windowsill and forgot about it for another 7 or so years until tidying up over Christmas.

I've now looked at it properly and realise it isn't a cheap teenagers ring but is actually white gold and what we think are diamonds and rubies. I showed it to a jeweller to day and they reckoned (from a very quick look), that it was all genuine and could be worth over £1K!!

What would you do with it? It must belong to someone who's visited us but no one has claimed it. I'd feel guilty keeping such a valuable item, but what else can I do with it?

What would you do?

After all this time, and no one has claimed it, I'd keep it if it fits or sell it if not.

I do police keep reports of lost or stolen items?

You could hand it on and eventually if not claimed you would get it back?

it isn't a cheap teenagers ring

I wouldn't assume that though. 17y dd always wears a lovely gold ring with rubies and diamonds. It belonged to DH's grandma and MIL gave her it 3 or 3 years ago. She now wears it everyday and loves it. Its not been valued but it will be worth a reasonable amount.

However, of you have asked everyone you know who has stayed/visited then there's not much more you can do.

I wondered about going to the police with it.
DH wondered if one of the teenage friends could have come by it by illegal means (they were all 'nice' young people but you never quite know) so didn't admit to it.

Nothing more you can do but sell it personally if I had lost a valuable ring I would be asking everyone if they had seen it

GreenShadow · 04/01/2020 21:15

It actually fits me (just), so I've started wearing it.

I’d keep it and enjoy it. What else is there to do?
