We paid ours off pre kids at 33, then dc came along and we added an extension to our house as it was cheaper than moving, so have a small loan on the extension which should be paid off in the next couple of years.

Dollymixture22 · 04/01/2020 22:31

@TildaDoll can I ask what your mean, is the mortgage broker finding you lower rates?

ANiceLuxury · 04/01/2020 22:31

We paid ours off yesterday. I’m 32, dh is 41

Megan2018 · 04/01/2020 22:31

Based in the current mortgage- 65
But likely to inherit so will pay off sooner-or cash in my BTL

Pascha · 04/01/2020 22:32
  1. Not much chance of overpaying, It u likely to change.
danadas · 04/01/2020 22:33

46 all being well.

We bought in 2005 when I was 21 so 10 years left on the mortgage.

I am so tempted to remortgage and get all the building/extension work done that we want but the thought of being mortgage free in ten years is such a pull. I don't know what to do.

buckeejit · 04/01/2020 22:35

I was 35. I bought my first house with ex for £53k about 20 years ago. Sold it for £120k odd just 3.5 years later & bought another for £135k which needed a lot of work. Ex & I then split but stayed in house, then now dh bought him out for his half-paid cash from inheritance. I kept my small amount of mortgage & brought the years right down so I was massively overpaying. Then after we had dd a few years later, moved to my hometown & fil gifted us the difference to buy our now home for £200k. I'm grateful every day that we have no mortgage, since leaving the city we were in, have taken massive pay cuts so we're somewhat asset rich, cash poor but life is great & mortgage is one less worry. Still plenty of other bills to pay, but I'd always advise overpay as much as you can, it makes a massive difference.

lunar1 · 04/01/2020 22:36

47 if we carry on as we are.

Crochetnanigans · 04/01/2020 22:36

Took out over 15 years. Shortened the term after 3 years. 5 years left to go.

I'll be 40

highupoverthere · 04/01/2020 22:38
  1. Took out at 39 with large deposit.

Aim to overpay from April and reduce term to 60.

Might downsize or move somewhere cheaper.

speakout · 04/01/2020 22:39

I don't really plan to pay it off.
OH and I are in our 50s, still have a mortgage, a fair bit of equity, but live in a large house with elderly parent and two young adult children.
There won't be 5 of us living here in 10 years time I don't think, so this house will be far too big for us. Plan is to downsize - there will be enough equity to buy a smaller place outright.

Babymamamama · 04/01/2020 22:39

I will finish at 51. But I've been overpaying for several years to make that happen. Agree with PP mortgage broker worth her weight in gold. She got me a tracker mortgage years ago for the life of the mortgage so I didn't have to shop around and pay more fees every couple of years. Cannot wait to have the extra cash once these overpayments cease and I will be done with the whole mortgage thing. Plan to never borrow again. I'm also very anti credit so have never owned a credit card.

SuperMeerkat · 04/01/2020 22:40

No overpayments, 67 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Looking to remortgage and our aim is to pay off by 55 at the latest.

PickAChew · 04/01/2020 22:40

Originally, 44. Started again at 48 and if we don't make any more overpayments, 69. Repayments aren't massive, though, so we're dumping extra in, every now and then.

bettybattenburg · 04/01/2020 22:41

I was 33.

Happygirl79 · 04/01/2020 22:44

Paid off my mortgage at 47

CountFosco · 04/01/2020 22:46

67 if don't overpay. Late 40s and just moved to a bigger property last year. 3DC and we were in desperate need of more space. Love our new house and will be here for next 20 years. But will overpay to shorten term and will get couple of inheritances in that time as well sadly.

brightbluesky · 04/01/2020 22:56

Currently, we will be 58. However our house has almost doubled in value and we plan to move to a slightly cheaper area in the next 18 months (but house will be bigger) Will remortgage then and I'm aiming to clear it by 50 🙌

BellaVita · 04/01/2020 22:57

GogoGobo · 04/01/2020 23:01

Dementedmagpie · 04/01/2020 23:03

Hopefully late this year.i will be 42

Devonishome1 · 04/01/2020 23:03

47

Absa · 04/01/2020 23:05

I'm 33, have 2 houses between me and my DH. Have enough money to pay 1 house off fully now and the other house would only be left with a 30,000 mortgage. But we crazily decided to buy another house so will now be 68. Hoping to make overpayments though.
We live in a cheap are and bought at the right times.

Costacoffeeplease · 04/01/2020 23:31

We could pay it off now but have left £20k outstanding, May pay it off completely this year. I’m 54, husband 58

WatchingFromTheWings · 05/01/2020 00:02

Took out a 25 year mortgage nearly 3 years ago (first time buyers for both of us). We'll both be 67 by the time we pay it off. Not much point in downsizing when the kids leave home as we had an absolute bargain with this place. Can't figure out why it was so cheap even after nearly 3 years here!
