Broken metatarsal

My Daughter who is 6 jumped from a tree yesterday and landed awkwardly. She was in quite a bit of pain, her foot was swollen on the top and she was only able hobble so my husband took her to the walk in centre.

She was x rayed and has broken her 2nd metatarsal at the base. Apparently there were only nurses on duty two of whom reviewed her x ray. He was told to make sure she rests it, no running or jumping and to wear comfortable shoes to school. They run a virtual fracture clinic, her X Ray will be reviewed and any issues my husband will receive a call.

I wish I had taken her because my husband didn’t ask any questions, like how long she wear comfortable shoes or when she can resume sport. She is currently hobbling and in pain and I’m unsure if I should be telling her to keep the weight off of it or try to use the foot normally.

Has anyone else has any experience ?

When I did mine they sent me on my way with crutches and told me to ice it for a couple of days to reduce the swelling, not to put any weight on it for 2 weeks, then to wear comfortable flat shoes and avoid any stress on the foot for 6 weeks. It didn't hurt anymore after about 3-4 weeks but it's surprising how quickly my ankle lost it's strength during that time, it took an age for my ankle and foot to stop feeling weak and wobbly! If you call your GP's out of hours service they might be able to direct you to some useful aftercare information online.

it will be naturally splinted by the other metatarsals so assuming not displaced should heal fine. She should rest/ restrict activity for a couple of weeks - hobbling is fine - basically listen to her body and not overload it. It will take approx 6 weeks to heal fully but be much more comfortable after 3 or 4 weeks

20 years ago I broke mine doing the conga at the Xmas party....

I wasn't given crutches or anything. Very much given the advice your dd was. I think it only really hurt for about a week or so.
