What do you call the door at the back of a house that leads into a garden? My friend and I have completely different words!

The back door

2020BetterBeBetter · 03/01/2020 15:27

Depends. We have French doors, patio doors, kitchen door and back door.

JKScot4 · 03/01/2020 15:27

The back door? 🤔

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/01/2020 15:28

Patio or french doors if they’re those kinds of doors; otherwise just “the back door”. Can’t think I’ve ever heard other terms!

APatchyTomCat · 03/01/2020 15:28

The rearward portal.

Jk, the back door.

ladybee28 · 03/01/2020 15:30

I call it a back door. My grandmother calls hers the garden door.

Devaki · 03/01/2020 15:31

Back door

loserssaywhat · 03/01/2020 15:32

I have patio doors but it takes longer to say so I just call it the back door.
Intrigued as to what else it could be called??

Rollonspringtime2020 · 03/01/2020 15:32

Does your friend say 'tradesman's entrance '??

SarahTancredi · 03/01/2020 15:32

Back door

Unless it's the glass sliding kind then its patio doors.

OneUsernameOnly · 03/01/2020 15:32

The back door

chocolateisavegetable · 03/01/2020 15:33

I'm going to start calling mine the rearward portal

BarbaraofSeville · 03/01/2020 15:36

Our 'back door' used to be on the side until we had an extension built but we still called it the back door.

lfoatw2 · 03/01/2020 15:37

I so wish that rearward portal was part of the debate!

I call it the back door, she has only ever known it as the garden door. Until her and ladybee's post, I'd never heard of the term!

OP posts:
Onewardsup · 03/01/2020 15:40

Is she vair posh?

Mine is now rearward portal. It was backdoor or patio doors.

leghairdontcare · 03/01/2020 15:41

Backdoor (even though it's on the side of the house)

zoobincan · 03/01/2020 15:42

Back door = arse hole Grin

lfoatw2 · 03/01/2020 15:44

She's not posh at all and chuckling away at the very idea. She is also taken with the idea of a portal, but minus the rearward bit. Probably the garden portal in her house

WombleOfTheThighs · 03/01/2020 15:47

Our back door is at the front of the house, as most of the houses where we live have their kitchens facing onto the street and the front gardens are at the back. We still call it a back door, though.

Topseyt · 03/01/2020 15:49

I call it the back door. Until now. I'm now tempted to start calling it the rear portal instead! GrinGrin

ladybee28 · 03/01/2020 15:52

@wombleofthethighs your post has blown my mind.

I'm so confused!

How can a front garden be at the back of a house?

What's at the front of your front garden if it's at the back?

Can a front door be attached to a kitchen, or is it automatically a back door if there's a kitchen involved?

I think I'm going to need a diagram...

And OP - I'm pretty sure my grandmother's the only person I've ever heard call it the garden door, too Grin

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 03/01/2020 15:54

Probably somewhere in her family history, they lived in a house that had a main door, then the other door wasnt on the back of the house, but the side into the garden, so became known as the garden door rather than the back door, as it wasnt the door at the back of the house.

I knew someone at uni who found it odd we called the sitting/living room the front room, because she grew up on a housing estate designed with the kitchens at the front and the living/sitting room at the back of the houses, so noone she knew growing up called it the front room. Its probably something similar.

lfoatw2 · 03/01/2020 15:59

Disgruntled we are looking into that idea with her mum. Sounds completely plausible but she doesn't think that's the case. We are investigating what the rest of her family call it...
