How do you say it out loud?

OP posts:
GaaaaarlicBread · 10/01/2020 20:20

I say Twenty Twenty I think but haven’t had to say it until now !
Before that I’d say Two thousand and nine , two thousand and ten etc all the way to Two thousand and nineteen

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/01/2020 20:27

Two-thousand
Two-thousand-and-one
up to
Two-thousand-and-nine
then
Twenty-ten
Twenty-eleven
up to
Twenty-ninety-nine

Well, I won't say the later ones that way, as I won't be around, but I'm sure I would if I were still alive then.

Twenty-oh-one would have sounded silly, but you couldn't have dropped the 'oh' and said twenty-one as that just sounds like you're saying 21 - which we might be doing next year!

vanessalightfoot · 10/01/2020 20:34

One of my kids was born in 2011 and I’ve just realised I always say “two thousand eleven” when giving his DOB. It’s like the “and” would just be one too many syllables Hmm
Everything post 2012 seems much more compatible with “twenty twelve” etc maybe that was the turning point?

MrsBungle · 10/01/2020 20:37

I also said “two thousand and...” up to 2009 then moved to saying twenty....

Aragog · 10/01/2020 20:39

For 2001 to 2019 I have said 'two thousand and ...' but tend to say 'twenty twenty' for this year.

TheGinGenie · 10/01/2020 20:56

Two thousand
Two thousand and one etc
Twenty ten
Twenty eleven etc
Twenty twenty

I do remember wondering if it should be twenty oh one though cause it's nineteen oh one, sixteen oh 3 etc but it sounds weirder

amusedbush · 10/01/2020 21:04

Two thousand and nine.
Twenty ten.
Twenty fifteen.
Twenty twenty.

kenandbarbie · 10/01/2020 21:08

Oooo I think I say two thousand and twenty. Am I really old fashioned and wrong?!?!

Ceramique · 11/01/2020 18:56

I've heard two thousand and twenty a few time now.

OP posts:
Inappropriatefemale · 12/01/2020 06:12

Well I say twenty twenty now and in the past I said twenty nineteen but when it was 2000/01/02/03 and so on then I would say two thousand and one, two, three and so on because saying twenty one twenty two and so on, would have felt like I was saying 21 22 23 if this makes sense.

Redshoesandtheblues · 12/01/2020 07:45

Its two thousand and twenty in my mind.
Think I'd still say it aloud.

zoobincan · 12/01/2020 08:06

This has always weirded me out.

1901 was nineteen 01 and so on (I mean watching any TV about the early 1900's this is how it was said, I wasn't around then!) but for some reason when we got to 2001 we became unable to say twenty 01 etc. I think 'two thousand and' sounds better than 'twenty oh' and that's how it stuck. When we got to the 10's though I really didn't know why we hadn't progressed to 'twenty ten' etc. Even now at 2020 many are still not using 'twenty twenty' and have stuck with 'two thousand and'

I can't work it out, I always called the years the way all other years had been presented to me by the media so 'twenty whatever' but people thought I was odd Grin

Breathmiller · 12/01/2020 08:36

Interesting differences.

I have used "Two thousand and..." up to now but will probably change my wording to Twenty twenty as I think it makes more sense.

I may slip up at times and say "two thousand and twenty " sometimes though.

I am notoriously terrible with dates after 2000 and have a bit of number blindness to them. So I struggle to tell you what happened in what year post 2000. But before that I had a better hold on it. I do wonder if that will get better in the 20s.

KidCaneGoat · 12/01/2020 08:39

I say twenty oh nine. And twenty oh eight

VivaLeBeaver · 12/01/2020 08:53

I said two thousand and one, two thousand and nine.

I think I carried on saying it like that for the next decade for a bit, so two thousand and twelve.

By the time I’d got to 2018 I’d converted to saying twenty eighteen.

But for anything from 2009 and before I would still say two thousand. I thing saying twenty oh nine sounds odd.

JulietTango · 12/01/2020 09:10

Twenty twenty is easy to say.
There's a cricket competition with the same name but that's been shortened again to T20

FrangipaniBlue · 12/01/2020 11:40

I'm with other posters that I said two thousand and one, two thousand and two etc up to two thousand and nine but then it became twenty ten, twenty eleven, etc.

I don't know anyone who says it any other way.

But thinking about it, when we talk about the 1900s we do say nineteen oh one, nineteen oh two - why on earth is that??? !!!

Plumpplums · 12/01/2020 11:47

Two thousand and twenty
Two thousand and nine

MGMidgetGirl · 20/03/2020 18:49

I say "two thousand and twenty" and I do not see anything wrong with it!

MGMidgetGirl · 20/03/2020 18:50

They also say "twenny-twenny" instead of "twenty-twenty"!

MGMidgetGirl · 20/03/2020 18:51

@Ginger1982 They also say "twenny-twenny" instead of "twenty-twenty"!

CorianderLord · 20/03/2020 19:47

'Two thousand and two' up until two thousand and nine.

From then twenty ten, twenty eleven... etc up until now, twenty twenty

CorianderLord · 20/03/2020 19:52

It's because we couldn't call the year 2000 anything else...

Can't call it twenty oh oh or twenty hundred... it had to be two thousand and that stuck until it reverted back to the easier twenty twenty version when we got to numbers that sounded nicer that way.

Chesntoots · 20/03/2020 20:48

Two thousand
Two thousand and one
Two thousand and ten
Two thousand and nineteen
I flit between both twenty twenty and two thousand and twenty. It's only reading this post that has made me realise I do it! I've confused myself now (easily done)
