Do tall people mind helping shorter people reach things in the supermarket?

I’ve just had to ask for help in Sainsbury’s (5’3) and it always makes me feel a bit infantile which is stupid - I can’t help being short!

The person I asked just laughed but do tall people ever get annoyed?

OP posts:
CoffeeRunner · 02/01/2020 12:11

I also get asked quite a lot (5ft 9) and don’t mind at all.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 02/01/2020 12:13

I'm 4'11. I'll always ask a shop assistant / knock something down / climb up if practical but I do appreciate help from taller people when none of those is an option. Thank you!

I help people with buggies & heavy cases at tube stations quite often so hopefully that levels it out.

I have a 6.5 husband and a 6.6 son.
People are always asking them for help, they don't mind at all,
At a concerts when people go to the loo/bar they are always used to guide them back to the correct place in the stadium.

@Londonborncatty and @beautifulstranger101

Oh good. I’ve never had anyone refuse but I would hate to think anyone felt I was rude asking or that I am anything other than grateful.

My 16 year old, 6”5’ ds arrived home recently delighted with himself as he had been asked to get something down from a top shelf. If he’s with me, I offer him to people if they are struggling too.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 02/01/2020 12:13

Can I recommend all the vertically challenged to get a pair of these?

My shopping has been revolutionised since having a bit of extra lift in my shoes Grin

I am 5 foot tall and try my best to climb/manipulate my body to reach things. Usually people see this and offer to help as I hate asking.
Glad to see people dont mind being asked tho!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 02/01/2020 12:21

it's fine - in fact I proactively offer when I see people struggling. Last time was when I saw a man trying to knock a box of Magnums off the top shelf with his walking stick Grin.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/01/2020 12:22

As a shortarse I'm more than happy to offer my services for those that need something from the lower shelves!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/01/2020 12:23

I've very occasionally been glared at by the partner of whoever I've asked...like that's how I pick up men!!

worldweary45 · 02/01/2020 12:24

I don't mind at all if I'm by myself

If I've got my daughter with me it's a different matter though

She had HFA and severe anxiety -but you wouldn't know that by looking at her, especially when she is animatedly talking to me

people talking to us in the supermarket is not part of 'the plan' and we actually drive further away to avoid bumping into people we might know -it's the only way I can get her into a supermarket which is a pretty major step for her

Random strangers just blow her mind -and not in a good way!

Miggymoggymugwumps · 02/01/2020 12:31

I often get pressed ganged with the words 'ooh you're tall can you just get me such & such as I can't reach' I absolutely don't mind but often wonder if it'd be cheeky to ask a short person to get me something off of the bottom shelves & save me bending down all that way!!!

incogKNEEto · 02/01/2020 12:37

I don't mind at all, and will offer if I see someone shorter than me looking hopefully at a high shelf Smile. I do worry that I will cause offence by offering help though...

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 02/01/2020 12:39

I'm five foot and tend to prefer climbing up the shelves to asking someone to help. But then I've always been a bit odd.

Londonborncatty · 02/01/2020 12:46

whyami I love that you’re paying back into society with your tall son 😂
You sound lovely and I’m sure would not have ever offended anyone.

Gingernaut · 02/01/2020 12:46

I hope not.

Chochito · 02/01/2020 12:49

Not at all, OP. It makes me feel really flattered, honestly. I'm only 5'7" but have long arms like a monkey. Always happy to help reach things in the supermarket (I do get asked quite frequently) and can't imagine how anyone would mind?

whyamidoingthis · 02/01/2020 12:58

@Londonborncatty - I love that you’re paying back into society with your tall son 😂

Good to teach them to be helpful Grin

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/01/2020 13:05

My DH often helps people reach higher things. He’s married to a shortie though.

whyamidoingthis · 02/01/2020 13:06

@Miggymoggymugwumps - I absolutely don't mind but often wonder if it'd be cheeky to ask a short person to get me something off of the bottom shelves & save me bending down all that way!!!

I wouldn't mind but I suspect it's no more effort for you to reach the bottom shelves as your arms are presumably way longer than mine. Although my eyes would be lower so maybe depends on eyesight and co-ordination?

To be honest, I would love to be asked to get something down but am never asked. I have offered for people who are obviously infirm or in a wheelchair or similar. It’s always been gratefully accepted.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 02/01/2020 13:06

My 6’6” ex once offered to get something down for a tiny lady who was actually climbing up the shelves in Sainsbury's and she told him to fuck off!

crankysaurus · 02/01/2020 13:08

I don't mind helping in the slightest.

kevintheorangecarrot · 02/01/2020 13:08

Not that I know of. People who shop at my local supermarket always help me when I ask.

TheTinselrati · 02/01/2020 13:09

I'm always happy to help anyone who can't reach

megletthesecond · 02/01/2020 13:09

I never mind helping.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2020 13:10

I'm 5'10 and happy to help.
