Mucus I've just coughed up - Picture inside

I've had a cough for awhile now and been using inhalers a lot.
Is this colour of mucus I've just coughed up anything to be concerned about?

Possibly infection, but also, being a bit grim, do you get post nasal drip? It could be that you're coughing up the mucus from your nose that you've swallowed?

MrNobody · 02/01/2020 15:29

I am snotty and times. Got crusty skin in my nose also. Crusty sore swollen ear too

I was coughing up really green, lumpy mucus before Christmas (sorry!) and it turned out to be a chest infection that needed antibiotics.
It was accompanied with a temperature, rattling chest and fatigue though; I felt really rough.

I'm still coughing up thinner mucus now Sad

It may well be an infection, but viruses can also cause green mucus so it may not necessarily warrant concern/antibiotics.
See your GP anyway I'd say.

I use a steroid inhaler daily. Every winter I catch at least one bad cough (work with small children!) which leads to rumbly coughs and (sorry) spitting up loads of this.

I've been to the gp before and they e said it's a virus, no infection. The big sign of infection would be a temperature. If you have one, see the doc. Otherwise you could do as I do and wait for it to pass- for me can be up to a fortnight or three weeks. The green gloop doesn't g always mean infection.

(Use inhaler for asthma)

gerbo · 02/01/2020 16:47

Ps. I meant to say, get well soon!

MrNobody · 02/01/2020 18:16

Aww thanks gerbo.

I don't feel ill, its just the feeling of not being able to get relief from the inhaler that sucks.

Coughing that up last week - was given antibiotics for it.

I sometimes think we’ve forgotten that our bodies can fight infection without antibiotics (if we’re healthy). Not everything needs antibiotics and a mucus cough will likely get better on its own even if it is an infection

gerbo · 02/01/2020 19:51

I've been the same! Taking three puffs twice or three times a day rather than two puffs twice a day.

Maybe call your gp about taking more inhaler? This cough has really felt like my lungs were closing in, more than any in previous years. I know I can use mine up to 9 puffs a day.

Generally, I consider green mucus to be a sign of infection. Saying that, I had a very bad chest with that kind of phlegm (felt like my chest was hollow/ echoey, and I choked uncontrollably every time I lay down) that I managed to shake off without ABs. My son got the cold too and he got wheezy with it, so I did take him to the docs, who prescribed ABs.

If you’re wheezy I’d go to the GP.
