Am I the only person in the world who didn't find Fleabag amazing?

Everyone I know raves about Fleabag but I've watched 3 episodes and just thought meh. It's not very funny to me. What am I missing?

OP posts:

My favourite line of the whole thing :
“ Fuck you calling me Father like it doesn’t turn you on just to say it” - his delivery was perfect.

Crinkle77 · 02/01/2020 22:05

I was also a bit meh about series 1 but loved series 2. I think Andrew Scott might have had something to do with it Grin

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 22:10

Divebar yes, that was brilliant.

On the comedy front, I loved “my priest is here and he really needs some guidance” 😂

Thehagonthehillwithtinsel · 02/01/2020 23:58

Watched first episode and didn't bother again.I was amazed that it became popular.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 03/01/2020 00:13

I enjoyed it but agree it was over-hyped and found that the whole ‘breaking the fourth wall’ bit got tedious... however, I also think Andrew Scott gives an amazing performance (as well as being hot, obvs).

GingerBeverage · 03/01/2020 08:00

I can't think of another recent show that was so universally praised and adored.
Watched S1 and by the end it was a hate watch. Didn't bother with S2 since media coverage and social media basically told the whole plot line anyway. Certainly know I would find the miscarriage scene upsetting.
I suppose there's something satisfying in seeing posh people just as unhappy and screwed up as everyone else, but then again the posh people who made it seem to have fantastic lives.

AutumnRose1 · 03/01/2020 09:25

“ Certainly know I would find the miscarriage scene upsetting. ”

Nothing was shown, in case that’s helpful info for anyone.

I think with hype, I try to avoid media as much as possible- not easy - but it helps and my brain doesn’t link it to “should I watch this”.

MustardScreams · 03/01/2020 09:27

Op you have to watch the 2nd series which is 100x better imo. Hot priest is very excellent, although the kneeling scene was a bit much for me.

They aren't posh though, just established middle class. No more so than Miranda for example and she doesn't get the class hate.

Sagradafamiliar · 03/01/2020 10:06

Miranda is aristocratic.

AutumnRose1 · 03/01/2020 10:56

Miranda wasn’t aired in the time of “let’s hate everybody”.

Those days were such fun 😂

Crinkle77 · 03/01/2020 13:27

I loved the chemistry between FWB & Andrew Scott. I was soooo jealous of Fleabag!!!

ForalltheSaints · 03/01/2020 14:23

Good yes, amazing no. I saw PWB in a play about ten years ago where she played the part of an endangered species, a Liberal Democrat having a relationship with a man!!!.

springydaff · 03/01/2020 14:34

PWB is incredibly posh from what I've gathered.

springydaff · 03/01/2020 14:39

The Waller-Bridge family were landed gentry of Cuckfield, Sussex.[8][9] On her father's side, she is also a descendant of The Rev. Sir Egerton Leigh, 2nd Baronet, Conservative MP for Mid Cheshire from 1873 to his death in 1876.[10][11] Her maternal grandfather was Sir John Edward Longueville Clerke, 12th baronet, of Hitcham, Buckinghamshire.

BoxedWine · 03/01/2020 14:58

PWB herself has aristo ancestry but the Fleabag character's antecedents aren't explored at all. They make it quite clear the family have money from the childhood home, plus the sister's salary is mentioned and presumably the successful artist godmother/stepmother isn't short of a few bob. But that could be aristocracy, new money or anything inbetween.

CountFosco · 03/01/2020 15:15

How much would that house have cost in the 1970s (when Fleabag's father would have bought it) though? PILs live in a very posh part of Edinburgh but when they bought it 40+ years ago it was considered an unfashionable Victorian suburb and was where young architects and academics lived.

AutumnRose1 · 03/01/2020 15:28

springy why do you mention the poshness of the writer, please?

springydaff · 04/01/2020 10:48

Because someone upthread said she is standard middle class. When someone else said something about good to know posh people struggle too.

AutumnRose1 · 04/01/2020 10:50

springy oh right.

Are we talking about Fleabag as a character? Because someone included a link to the writer’s history.

AnnaMagnani · 04/01/2020 10:55

I liked it but we have just finished watching all of The Detectorists and loved that far more.

AutumnRose1 · 04/01/2020 10:55

oh I just looked back

it was you springy.

do you find PWB background relevant?

if you're going to ask why I'm asking...it's partly because I do some writing and I've been pissed off with agents trying to delve into my background. In my case it's race, but I don't see why any of this should impact on work I'm trying to sell.

NoncePieforSanta · 04/01/2020 10:59

It's basically Bridget Jones (which was tediously cringe-worthy) repackaged for millenials. But other opinions are available.

katewhinesalot · 04/01/2020 11:00

I watched a couple of episodes but gave up.

Youngatheart00 · 04/01/2020 11:02

I was mildly entertained but ultimately underwhelmed by both series of Fleabag. Mind you, I was by Killing Eve too (which I believe PWB wrote?)

Hyped up programmes so often don’t live up to the hype!
