Am I the only person in the world who didn't find Fleabag amazing?

Everyone I know raves about Fleabag but I've watched 3 episodes and just thought meh. It's not very funny to me. What am I missing?

OP posts:
dirtyrottenscoundrel · 02/01/2020 18:49

I didn’t find it funny, but then I’m 20 years too old for it.

Inherdefence · 02/01/2020 18:49

I saw bits of Series 1 and thought it was awful. Series 2 was a whole other level and totally brilliant.

confusedandemployed · 02/01/2020 18:50

I thought it was terribly pleased with itself, and much the worse for it. I didn't manage to crack a smile either.

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2020 18:54

I really enjoyed it but tbh I didn’t find it that funny, I just enjoyed watching it like I would a very engaging drama or something. And there were definitely witty bits, characters etc.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 18:58

Ding

oh right....I thought it was important that was done though. It would be too easy to avoid that. For many reasons. (Also I genuinely thought PWB was very good with her impression).

I did wonder how I would have kept up with the stage show - would Claire and Martin have been clear in my head etc.

I wonder if you can watch Season 2 as a stand alone and make sense of it?

the other thing, OP, is it's very economical writing and the amount they fit into a 25 min episode is v good, so you might like that.

It's so individual isn't it. I was looking for a nice gentle comedy recently, started watching the Detectorists and gave up as I was so bored.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 19:00

dirty I don't know what age you are but don't think there's a connection.

I know a woman who is 19 and loved it and a couple of women in their 60s who loved it.

Discobabe98 · 02/01/2020 19:02

I genuinely liked Fleabag, but agree with others in that Gameface is much better. Marcella is a more likeable main character and it’s like laugh out loud funny whereas Fleabag is more ‘has funny bits’.

Divebar · 02/01/2020 19:04

I liked the first series but loved the second series....it was dark, sexy, sad and funny rolled into one. I have no idea why anyone would even speak about it in the same breath as Miranda. But there are lots of things that are popular that I don’t like.( E.g. Not Going Out ) ... it would be a dull world if we all liked the same stuff.

Sammi38 · 02/01/2020 19:11

It’s not one of your ‘in your face’ comedies, it’s much more subtle. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is an absolutely amazing writer, and some of the scenes have been fantastic (the Kristin Scott Thomas scene in the bar, for instance). I was surprised Fleabag didn’t get the recognition it deserved, although glad PW-B got recognition for Killing Eve.

CountFosco · 02/01/2020 19:14

I loved it and thought it was the best thing I'd seen for ages but it's OK to not like everything. Everyone has different taste. I think bits of it are hilarious but it's the darkness that is outstanding. And her being 'saved' by another very flawed individual is part of that (he was not a hot priest). The ending was perfect.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2020 19:24

The Detectorists is awful. My dp really likes it (but he is clearly bonkers).

Aibuornotoop · 02/01/2020 19:26

It’s quite funny in parts but so so so overrated

Aliceinwanderland · 02/01/2020 19:27

I watched 10 minutes of what I think was intended to be "shocking" monologue and found it boring and nothing that unusual. I am going to watch more just so I can see what the fuss is about but I wasn't excited by the clips I had seen.

PickAChew · 02/01/2020 19:32

I didn't watch it expecting in your face comedy. That's probably why I enjoyed it.

bakewreck99 · 02/01/2020 19:34

I far preferred the second season, I liked it overall though.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 19:36

Alice I don’t think anything in Fleabag is meant to be shocking but there’s things the press like to froth about - as always.

Well, okay one thing about Claire but I don’t want to do any spoilers and it wasn’t part of a long dialogue so can’t be that.

SauvignonBlanche · 02/01/2020 19:37

I’m sure you’re not the only person who didn’t enjoy it, but I’m not one of them.
I wouldn’t give up too quickly asSeries 2 is great.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 19:37

I like the silly bits like when the priest says “oh I’m sorry, I don’t know how to talk to babies” and moves away 😂

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/01/2020 19:43

I watched the first series and by the end was just pissed off by PWB, although I did enjoy it despite her character.
The second series was on another level though. I thought it was excellent. It then prompted me to go back and watch series one again and I enjoyed it a lot more the second time.

sqirrelfriends · 02/01/2020 19:45

Carry on OP, I didn't like the first couple of episodes and actually found it quite depressing.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/01/2020 19:53

There's no doubt it is 'groundbreaking' to have a completely filthy, up for it sexually and totally unlikeable character lead a 30 minute sitcom format. Whether you like it or not, find it funny or not, ground was broken.

The build in series one was great I thought, though I agree it wasn't funny-funny. Series two was bloody excellent - the first episode of season two was one of the best 30 mins of telly you'd see anywhere.

For all we slag off the BBC we're so lucky to have it. I love that PWB is being feted in the states now, but suspect Fleabag wouldn't have made it through the pilot system there. She has been supported and developed and though FB series 1 is by no means the 'best thing on the telly' she's a rare talent.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/01/2020 19:54

*female character FFS. That's the most important bit!

MrNobody · 02/01/2020 20:03

Love it. I like when she looks and speaks to you.

BoxedWine · 02/01/2020 20:07

Series 2 is better. The start of series 1 isn't anything particularly great.

dayswithaY · 02/01/2020 20:10

The talking to camera was so cringey and try hard. All about the shock value and "yes I'm a woman but I can still be filthy" fakeness. A bit like the Spice Girls shouting "girl power" and hoping no one asks them exactly what they mean. Killing Eve is embarrassing crap as well.
