Am I the only person in the world who didn't find Fleabag amazing?

Everyone I know raves about Fleabag but I've watched 3 episodes and just thought meh. It's not very funny to me. What am I missing?

Some people fall about laughing at other people's embarrassment (see Beadle's About, et al) whilst others cringe and would rather have their toenails extracted than watch. Some people find impersonations funny, others don't, some love 'slice of life' (like Royle Family) and others don't.

I don't think it's a case of not getting it, it's just whether or not it appeals to your sense of humour. I love the absurd, and absolutely hate anything that's cringe inducing. I can't even watch The Office. But I love Mitchell and Webb and Monty Python, which I know a lot of people can't stand.

We're all different, that's all it comes down to, I guess.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 02/01/2020 12:46

Series 2 is better. I was a bit "meh" about series one and guessed the plot twist fairly early on

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 02/01/2020 14:02

It felt to me like a tired retread of the "woman looking for meaning in life finds it in men" trope that has been around since Jane Austen at least. With Jane it was marriage, with Bridget Jones it was a boyfriend, with Fleabag it's sex.

MardyGrass · 02/01/2020 15:09

I found it dire.

LuluJakey1 · 02/01/2020 15:12

I didn't find it funny. I thought it was very entertained by itself if you see what I mean. I didn't like the main character at all. At times I thought ut was just very obvious and quite crass. I feel it's a bit like The King's New Clothes.

Yellredder · 02/01/2020 15:13

I couldn't get on with it. Might try it again though.

Bluesheep8 · 02/01/2020 16:26

I thought it was awful. Cringingly so. I like Miranda though.

Flicketyflack · 02/01/2020 16:41

I loved the series but saw the stage 'play' and thought it was tosh Grin

Really disappointing 😁

springydaff · 02/01/2020 17:32

I did think it was brilliant. But also some troubling elements.. actually, a LOT of troubling elements.

But the sister, and their relationship, was wonderful. The stepmother vile - how could the gorgeous Olivia Coleman be so revolting! I completely fell in love with the priest but was very troubled by the blatant abuse of power..

Didn't like the first series because it was sex sex sex, so dull and kind of grubby.

I generally loved it. But can quite see why you didn't.

BackforGood · 02/01/2020 17:53

I couldn't take to it either.
We're all different I suppose. There's quite a few 'big' comedy shows I've not found funny (Young Ones / League of Gentlemen / Ab Fab / Mrs Brown's Boys) and loads of other series that I've loved that I'm sure other people haven't enjoyed.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2020 18:02

I only saw one episode and thought it was dreadful. And I detest Miranda.

SapphosRock · 02/01/2020 18:11

It was alright and quite entertaining. Don't really get the hype either.

DarkBrownEyes · 02/01/2020 18:17

Much preferred the one with Aisling Bea on Ch4.

NameChangeNugget · 02/01/2020 18:22

I think it’s genius.

People comparing it to Miranda are clearly missing the point. Miranda is so unfunny.

If Miranda is a £3 of Aldi Red, Fleabag is a Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992. The two are incomparable.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 18:27

OP I thought Fleabag was brilliant...but....I didn't really get into it until the last episode of season 1.

I binge watched it because everyone said it was great, so watched before Season 2. I should add, my father had not long passed and I didn't have much brain in, so it was okay to just sit in front of the TV and not take in too much. I found some scenes quite rubbish.

then in the final episode, I thought - this is great. So I rewatched it and it stood up much better, and I noticed much more lovely stuff - but sorry, I can't say if that links to the timing or my real opinion.

however....I think season 2 is genuinely brilliant.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 18:27

I find comparisons to Miranda a bit odd because Miranda is silly funny, whereas Fleabag can be dark.

Poetryinaction · 02/01/2020 18:30

I thought it was horrible.

DingDongMerrilyOnThigh · 02/01/2020 18:38

I enjoyed it. But we also went to see a stage to screen performance of the live show, that was a waste of time.

It felt to me like a tired retread of the "woman looking for meaning in life finds it in men" trope that has been around since Jane Austen at least. With Jane it was marriage, with Bridget Jones it was a boyfriend, with Fleabag it's sex.

Except that she really doesn't find meaning in life through sex at all, does she?

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 18:40

Ding "But we also went to see a stage to screen performance of the live show, that was a waste of time."

aw, no! In spite of PWB's fantastic impersonation of a guinea pig? Grin

It wasn't as good as the TV show, but I enjoyed it for what it was, as a one person show, incredible work.

museumum · 02/01/2020 18:44

I loved loved loved it by the end but episodes 1 and 2 I wasn’t sure. It’s not really a comedy though it has funny moments. By series 2 I was so invested. It really stuck with me.

Silversun83 · 02/01/2020 18:45

Found the first series a bit meh but watchable.. Absolutely loved the second series.. though a big part of that was The Hot Priest and the chemistry between them.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/01/2020 18:46

Didn’t like it at all.

DingDongMerrilyOnThigh · 02/01/2020 18:46

The guinea pig turned out to be the worst part of it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2020 18:47

For me it compares to Miranda because they each have a lead woman being very annoying, and neither of them made me laugh. Other than that, I can't comment. Grin

FancyAMincePie · 02/01/2020 18:48

I didn’t like it either OP
