Will I be able to do this? I’m panicking!

I’m old. Mid 50’s old. The last five years have seen big changes in my life. My dh died, two of my four dc have left home, a third is planning on leaving soon, and my youngest has just got his first girlfriend.

So I decided I needed to ring the changes somehow. Centuries ago I got a degree but for most of the last thirty years I’ve either been a sahm or been my Dh’s carer. I decided I needed a job but of course, with my background, that’s much easier said than done!

Somehow I’ve got myself an interview at a local club and now I’m petrified that (if I do somehow get the job) I won’t be able to do it. I’ve never worked behind a bar, never used a till. Can I do this?! Help!

Great news and well done! Just found your thread so so happy it's a happy ending! Or rather, beginning! Grin

Good job for taking the plunge!

@Owem fabulous and brilliant.

Sounds perfect that you can pick your hours and build up from there.

So pleased that you’re starting this year in a way that will ease you back into confidence.

I missed this when you first posted but just wanted to add my congratulations SmileFlowers

Dont expect to master it instantly. I have a friend who took a bar job in similar circumstances. She spent the first week wanting to quit because she said it was too difficult- remembering orders, learning about drinks, checking stock levels, working the till etc etc. Then it clicked into place and six months later she was the manager.

Well done OP and I'm wishing you the best of luck when you start your new role. It does take quite a while to settle into any new role (I'm 3mo into my new job and it's still a bit up and down as there are lots of gaps in my knowledge still). However, I can't wait to be a year in, two years in, that's what keeps me going when I find it more tough.

Take the job slow, ask questions and remember to smile. I'm sure you'll have loads of transferable skills.

Owem · 03/01/2020 11:14

You’re all so kind. It’s so lovely that complete strangers are taking time to comment, advise and congratulate. I’m so glad I turned to mn in my panic!

Best of Luck 🍀
I have been a barmaid, it is not that dissimilar to conversing with toddlers while trying to cook at times.
So it won't be a completely new skillset for you 😉

Igmum · 05/01/2020 04:22

Congratulations you'll be great 💐

You'll be just as good as any 18yo who's never done the job before, if not better because you have life experience. Well done on going for it Smile

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 05/01/2020 09:58

Of course you can do it! I was 18 and worked behind a bar and clueless not only about bar work but also about life in general and had not one iota of common sense so believe me you'll be fine!
